Your Top 10 albums of 2013

Rolling Stone has released their top 50 albums of 2013! What are your top 10? You can also include descriptions, ratings, honorable mentions, and albums you'd like to listen to, that you just haven't really delved into yet. Mine will come soon.

This might be fun to do, but do the albums in question need to have been released in 2013? More often than not, I stumble through the library of music that exists and pick things up as they come into my range of perception. I haven't listened to new music as it came out for a LONG time.

Here is my list in sections. Links to songs are included.

Honorable mentions:

12. Album: Antiphon, Artist: Midlake
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbNtl0UC_BI

Perhaps not as strong as their earlier, folkier output, and perhaps stronger. These psychedelically infused tracks are more consistently crafted musically, and the sonic landscape they've painted are certainly enjoyable. With the departure of their former frontman Tim Smith, the stoic-yet-wistful writer who penned their breakthrough single "Roscoe," their lyrics and, thus, their persona have certainly suffered, which is perhaps the only reason this is an honorable mention and not on the list.

11. Album: Tomorrow's Harvest, Artist: Boards of Canada
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jTg-q6Drt0

Boards of Canada have never strived to sound futuristic. Taking influence from music from 70's documentaries and Berlin School electronic artists such as Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, their sounds are reminiscent of the earliest days of electronic music, and yet their newest release 'Tomorrow's Harvest,' while retaining those elements, conjures images of a post-apocalyptic wasteland and seems to be more indicative of the future than most electronic albums today.

TOP 10:
(10-6)

10. Album: Random Access Memories, Artist: Daft Punk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA5PRj7KPkE

Daft Punk writes tracks about bringing "life back to music," and, while they are no revolutionaries, they certainly are bots of their word.

9. Album: Light Up Gold, Artist: Parquet Courts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACj-F63GK_M

Parquet Courts' smart debut is full of starts, stops, and dry wit.

8. Album: Immunity, Artist: Jon Hopkins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va4OyeQHbr8

Being responsible for the iconic intro to Coldplay's "Life in Technicolor," and doing a fair amount of production for Coldplay subsequently, Jon Hopkins' resume has always seemed more impressive than his music. With the release of the sprawling, ethereal "Immunity," however, Hopkins' has certainly proved his worth as a standalone musician and artist with a vision to which, in my opinion, Coldplay could never compare, Brian Eno notwithstanding.

7. Album: Major Arcana, Artist: Speedy Ortiz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmEgEPe5GnM

The dissonant, 90's-indebted, misanthropic noise rock of Speedy Ortiz sounds like a disease, and an infectious one, at that.

6. Album: m b v, Artist: My Bloody Valentine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2FQ3ih0MoE

Having spent 22 years on this album following the masterpiece and mental-breakdown-inducing Loveless, shoegaze-inventors My Bloody Valentine were playing to a tough audience. Creating something that even compared to their hefty stamp on modern music history was going to be a challenge and no one expected to pull it off. But they did, and, while perhaps it was not as complete as Loveless, it was an album that fans found it impossible to complain about it. As a suggestion, listeners should listen to this on good speakers, at ear-splitting volumes.

(5-1)
5. Album: Reflektor, Artist: Arcade Fire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_urb7pdDUCA

Arcade Fire’s sprawling, two-disc Reflektor may be indulgent for what is essentially a relationship album, but it never fails to make you care throughout with its sharp social commentary, extravagent themes, philosophical musings.

4. Album: The Bones of What You Believe, Artist: Chvches
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDlQxtNx4Fg

Consisting of two film composers and a journalist, Chvrches infuses what was formerly generic indie synth-pop with a refreshing and long-due dose of dazzling emotion and painful honesty.

3. Album: Loud City Song, Artist: Julia Holter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uulY9Qyp0sI

Based on the musical “Gigi,” (based on the book by the same name), Loud City Song shows off Julia Holter’s bizarre personality and also her compositional chops. Having studied music composition at the prestigious CalArts, she uses her experience with the avant-garde to inform her own brand of bedroom pop and the result is terrifyingly great and also greatly terrifying.

2. Album: Sunbather, Artist: Deafheaven
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWyVhIBmdGw

“Wistful” and “Black Metal” are two terms you’d hardly expect to hear in the same sentence. And yet that’s exactly the way I’d describe Deafheaven’s newest release Sunbather. The cover art is pink, the first song is in a major key, but this is an album full of some of the most heart-breaking songs of unrequited love, lust, and sadness you will ever hear, as evidenced on the opening track by frontman George Clarke mockingly screaming at himself drunk texts (“I’m dying” “It’s like a dream”) he once sent to a woman he was obsessed with. Listen to this album. Listen to it and let it hurt.

1. Album: Modern Vampires in the City, Artist: Vampire Weekend
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mDxcDjg9P4

As much as I cringed at some of the Rolling Stone’s choices for their best albums of 2013, I found myself agreeing with their first choice. Most good albums are difficult to write about effectively, and this one almost has me beat. I mean, it’s incredibly well-crafted, but beyond that, nothing I can say about it would do it justice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSNHofCE4rg

Album: Kveikur, Artist: Sigur Ros

Looking at that list I realize I really didn't get many 2013 albums at all, most of them were supplied by my brother, and I mostly listened to indie tracks made by individual dubstep artists and electronic artists I guess.
Just commenting on your list
11 Net's too slow to load at the moment but I'm very interested in any electronic artist that has the good old vibe. I do love my post-apocalyptic landscapes. I'll be counting on this album!

10 I'm glad Daft Punk did their thing well. I'll be interested in listening to that.

8 Eh? That's a whole lot of praise for the guy. Jon Hopkins huh. To be honest seeing is believing (or in this case listening is believing.) I really hold Coldplay in high esteem, but if he really did help with Life In Technicolor I can understand the props. That song is brilliant.

6 My Bloody Valentine invented shoegaze? Seriously Paipis!? That's amazing! It's one of my most favourite genres.

5 Wasn't aware that Arcade fire made another album. Their songs always get to me. I'm definately getting this

4 Only got one song from them, and I loved it. It's in a 'top indie mix 2013' that I listened to.

3   How do you know this stuff man.

2. Wistful Black metal?

1. I'm surprised Vampire Weekend was that good! It was on some top indie playlist

A friend of mine listens to Sigur Ros, and I found The National by listening to Frightened Rabbit.

I think I should probably be listening to albums instead of picking singular songs that I find interesting.

Really impressed by your in an out knowledge of the albums and their artists man.

Here is my list, I won't give examples or anything, and it's just any ten albums that were my favourite this year, they're not in any particular order.

1 Biffy Clyro (Opposites)
2 Deaf Havana (Old Souls)
3 Eisley (Currents)
4 Fall Out Boy (Save Rock and Roll) To be honest this isn't in any order but it seemed like a 'meh' album to me
5 Falling Up (Hours and Midnight On Earthship)
6 Hollywood Undead (Notes From The Underground)
7 Panic! at The Disco (Too Weird to Live, To Rare to Die)
8 Ra Ra Riot  (Beta Love)
9 Tegan and Sara (Heartthrob)
10 Zeromancer (Bye-Bye Borderline)

To be honest these are all opportunistically listened to. I didn't collect any albums at all! Just singles and stuff like that. I'll compensate by trying out what Rolling stones has to offer, and of course Paipis i'll pilfer some stuff from your list. I trust your musical tastes.

I'm not a Coldplay fan, and you may not like it better than Coldplay if you are a Coldplay fan, but it's certainly worth your listen

6 My Bloody Valentine invented shoegaze? Seriously Paipis!? That's amazing! It's one of my most favourite genres.
You listen to shoegaze? That stuff is the crowning jewel of the 90s in my opinion. Haven't listened to the 00s or 10s stuff besides MBV, but I'd certainly like to hear what newer shoegaze artists are doing.

3   How do you know this stuff man.
I mostly rely on music forums and music journalism publications.

1. I'm surprised Vampire Weekend was that good! It was on some top indie playlist
I wasn't keen on Vampire Weekend's older stuff. I thought A-punk was a nice song, but I didn't really pay attention to them much. Then my brother got this album and we listened to it on a long car ride. Great album. Wasn't sure, at first, whether or not I wanted it at the top of my list, but there was absolutely no doubt that it should be on there.

I think I should probably be listening to albums instead of picking singular songs that I find interesting.
Albums are my favorite format for music. Song's are nice, but albums change you. Seriously, listen to some albums.

I wanted to wait 'til the year ended, but I don't follow enough bands where it would make much of a difference anyway. You'll have to scour the Youtube yourself for the links.

1) Streetlight Manifesto: "The Hands that Thieve"
Kids, this is a genre of music that's called "Ska." You may not have heard of it, because it's both positive and tone and hardcore in execution. Sort of like a jazz-punk rock. Record producers fear that someday it will become popular, because EVERYTHING that comes after ska feels disappointing and disingenuous. Streetlight Manifesto does it good, and the new album is no exception.

2) Toh Kay: "The Hands that Thieve"
Yes, this is the same album as the one listed above. It's a slower collection of all the previous songs in a gentle-acoustic style. For the times when you need things to go (Barry White voice)... slow.

3) Less Than Jake: "See the Light"
More ska. Also fun-tastic.

4) The Grammar Club: "Bioavailable"
(White guy voice) "Now, I don't go approving of those RAP musics. But I do like these raps. They do good raps."
This is a super-group of different "nerdcore" and chiptune musicians that occasionally collaborate for a Gorillaz-type sound that's easy on the ears and the brain.
The album's free on Bandcamp, so give 'em a listen and take it for yourself if you feel so inclined.
http://thegrammarclub.bandcamp.com/album/bioavailable

5) Walt Disney Studios: "Frozen"
Loved this movie. Been listening to the soundtrack since then and it holds up just fine. Maybe see the movie first, though. "Let it Go" is a real showstopper.

6) Bowling for Soup: "Lunch. Drunk. Love."
I've always liked Bowling for Soup. They put a positive and upbeat spin on punk-rock when that was what I needed the most. They haven't lost their touch.

7) Reliant K: "Collapsible Lung"
Reliant K is a Christian Rock band that-

Hey, come back! They're really good, I promise!

8)Motion City Soundtrack: "GO"
What do you mean, "this came out in 2012?" I just got this album. I'm totally with the times.

9) Daft Punk: "Random Access Memories"
Probably would have listed it higher, but Paipis already covered it, and I don't feel the need to promote it as much as I do my personal faves.

10) John Denver and the Muppets: "A Christmas Together"
This will never NOT be the best album ever.

Rest in peace, Jim Henson and John Denver. I wish I could have met you before you passed.

Who were Jim and John?

Jim Henson was the guy who came up with the Muppets (as well as the voice of Kermit and others), Sesame Street, the movies "Labyrinth," "The Dark Crystal" and a whole bunch of other stuff. The more I read up on this guy, the more inspired I get. I owe a lot of good memories to this guy.

John Denver was a musician who I don't know as well (Don't take my word for it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Denver). He wrote and performed quite a few of the songs that I loved as a kid, but nothing got more playtime than the Christmas album "John Denver and the Muppets." Coryn can vouch that I've got that whole thing memorized, and am prone to singing it all throughout the year.

Haven't heard Motion City Soundtrack, so I suppose I'm more behind the times in that regard than you are.

NPR, NME, and Pitchfork have all come out with their lists.

Also, more albums I want to "delve into" that I forgot to mention:

Album: Field of Reeds, Artist: These New Puritans
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fss2puuksJc

Album: Love's Crushing Diamond, Artist: Mutual Benefit

I don't listen much stuff coming out in 2013. Though I like Grendel's timewave zero album. Most of the stuff I listen to is made in 90's and 00's. XD
