Even if you're not finishing out the month, this year's inks were very fun Echo! Good job!

And good luck with Nanowrimo! I haven't had the bravery to attempt it since college  :noidea: so more power to you and everyone else on the forum who plan to take a shot!

Thanks Coryn! Nanowrimo has been going okay so far. Certainly does take its toll on creative energy.
Just curious, have you written anything non-MR Canon related recently?  :o

Update (Kinda) ----

I almost forgot about posting the set of drawings I did in September! Last year, I partook in a challenge that a friend of mine started, called the August Daily Sketch Initiative. It was a challenge she started to help get her drawing through the month and she invited others to join her.

I actually posted last year's sketches here, the ones featuring the a blindfolded girl with a staff, some of them done as mini comic pages.

This year's prompts were all song-based. That is, they were all titles of songs picked either by my friend or some of the participants. She didn't give us the composer and added on a bonus challenge to find the song that was listed... yo, some had 4-5 songs with the same name!! (mostly the romantic based ones lol)

Anyway, instead of drawing new characters in a new setting, I decided to work on an idea I'd had for a while but never really drawn, so it was the perfect time to flesh out the designs and concepts a little more.

Here are the first few (NOTE: The subjects in the drawings don't follow in chronological order):

Day 1 - Wrong Side of Heaven

Day 2 - Assimilation

Day 3 - Book of Revelation

Day 4 - Black Swan

Day 5 - All the Work

The story follows No. 1 (name tbd) who tries to escape a survival game world she wakes up in. In her quest to get out, she gathers a team of like-minded individuals to help her beat the various stages of the game in order to gain more information.

As you'll find in these drawings, it's a darker idea than what I usually work with... (I don't generally like survival settings)... The setting is pretty gloomy... players kiling players, zombies hordes, horror stories on the train., enemy NPCs that just want you dead... that kind of thing. I'll share more about it when something comes to mind.

No one is perfect . . . that's why there's erasers and extra paper.

Good luck with NaNoWriMo!

Very cool results from these drawing projects you’ve done, and very inspiring! It’s actually got me wondering do you use your doodles and prompted drawings to inform and shape your story writing around, or do you tend to start from a story concept before the art? It’s actually been fairly difficult for me to write for my graphic novel story and I think it may be because I lack the concept art/visual storyboard element when I’m writing.

Anyways, pretty sure Day 1’s song is “Wrong Side of Heaven” by Five Finger Death Punch… not too sure about the others… if the same person suggested a song for Day 4 it could be an old song from Story of the Year??

Excited to see more from you as always :)

Let's see, non MR Canon, erm... Ah... I think....

Well, I must admit that it's been the majority of my writing recently. I started too many stories, and now I feel I must finish them, haha. Although I have definitely done some work for the Cyberpunk 2020 campaign I've been running. Nothing in great detail that I can really share on the forum, but I'd call it writing all the same.

Hopefully soon I can return to my non-canon bread and butter. War Arc is nearly done. And after that I will be spending some loving R&R with CS.

I have done both. Usually for the prompt/challenge drawings, it is the drawings that come first. I think up the character designs and develop the story on the spot. The nice thing about that is I get a feel of the world from the start and the story sometimes just comes out on its own. It's like, once you know what the main character looks like, you can design the villain to complement that, and he looks like he'd live in this type of enviromnent - kinda thing. At least that's what I've found.

For these sketches, I already had the story concept, but I hadn't fully designed or even named all of the characters. Drawing them now has helped in grounding character descriptions and personalities. I might have imagined or described a character or setting one way, but once I get it down in a drawing I might think, "Nah, it doesn't give off the impression I thought it would", and make changes then.

And yesss, you got Day 1 right! Day 4 is actually the K-pop BTS song ^^;

Haha, well the MR Canon stories are always fun to read. Really love the work you guys put into them!
Do hope to read more of your other writing in the future.

I didn't do Inktober this year, too busy with other stuff :/

Ah I get this, when I'm doing original characters I almost always get a backstory forming whether I like it or not :P

Some fantastic sketches as always, very ahrd to pick a favourite, but if I had to, I'd choose Scars of Time. It's hard, at least for me, to draw very emotional characters so I really appreciate a good sad face, they always make the pieces more interesting than happy faces I think.

And you did NaNoWriMo as well? paint me impressed.
I was going to attempt it this year myself to be honest but timing wise I had other stuff going on so I'm probably going to do my own in a couple months time.

Yeah, any challenge like Inktober and NaNoWriMo takes a chunk out of the schedule for sure. Thankfully I didn't have too much on my plate, otherwise I would have skipped them as well. Plus, the experience from previous years did give me a little confidence that I'd be able to do it again. Hopefully you'll be able to do them next year!

Thanks Suuper! I agree. Having drawn neutral expression for the longest time, transitioning to more dramatic faces feels refreshing lol

I think tbh I won't ever do Inktober again (for myself), although in a professional capacity I might, just to engage with the community. Since about 50% of my artworks already use random prompts, I'm already well used to working with ideas out of my comfort zone, and so Inktober isn't really any more challenge than my normal work. Plus I'm getting better at organising my own personal challenges and projects which are of a similar nanture.

But definitely NaNoWriMo 2022 I think I will try for sure, even if I'm not ready.

I must say I do love the consistency of your style, especially the shading.
I love the material render on the Wonderwhy one. I'm useless at stuff like that @_@
Also great city shot one, although drawing with a fisheye perspective is a real tough one. Personally I find it difficult to draw cityscapes since I like drawing closeup characters, so getting the scale between seeing lots of city, and still seeing details on the characters can be a tough balance.

Lovely Christmas drawing too, really got a lot of energy and interaction between the characters.

Keep it up this year too! All the best with your projects and the webcomic you're doing too :D

@Coryn Thanks!

@Suuper
That's true, you're pretty much your own prompt maker! XD What would be a next level challenge for you then?

Belatedly remembers I had process sketches.
Spoiler

The perspective was so toughhh. I really wanted to show how bottomless it was but the perspective lines weren't intersecting properly. Slowly got to a sketch that made more sense to me.

Feel like for contrasting the character and cityscape, those manga backgrounds where you see a big shot of the city in the distance, with the character in the foreground, work nicely. But yeah, if you're putting the character in the city, then they'd have to pop out somehow, unless the intent is to blend them in with the scene.

Thank you! Best wishes for your projects this year too!

Update --

Back with digital drawings! I'm still trying to find a style I'm comfortable with. I think I'm starting to get more familiar with the shading and lighting, mostly just mimicking what I see other artists do (half not understanding what they're doing eheh).

Winter outfits - Eraen and Enryk

Shadow Child

BobbyJoeX's character, Danny.

WIP --

Warm up sketches (may not finish them)

hmmmmmm.....a next level challenge for me?
probably producing a number of finished pieces in a small timeframe, like 100 coloured pieces in a week or something XD
or an actual manga comic in a week, like a whole book :P That's one of my end-game goals actually.
drawing without guidelines or reference is probably a sort of challenge sounding thing that I do from time to time, like Kim Jung Gi or something. That was always my goal before I even heard about him.
Basically anything that would produce a certain level of work but cut out a step from my normal workflow would be a challenge I think.
Drawing in another artist's style would also be a nice challenge

Great sketches, I love the coloured winter one. You got the zip pulling pose pretty good considering how hard it it to draw. But the lines for the hands were quite thick compared to the rest of the piece so it looked like gloves? wasn't sure.
Loved the double outlining on the clothing, really adds detail without too much effort. And the shading around the pockets, I love pockets XD

And the WIP one is nice too, with one character turning it definitely gives a third person POV vibe.

"If other artists are doing it, it must be for a good reason, so I will do it" XD
Not a bad mantra to be honest but it's always good to try and figure out the reasons behind methods and stuff because it gives you more freedom and control over your work.

That's partly why I had a problem with proportions for so long was that I was drawing what I thought manga looked like rather than actually seeing what it was.
