Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
« on: July 22, 2010, 01:17:48 PM »
I began formatting the anthology but many stories have problems regarding the spaces, alineas and general page setting.

Here is a quick explaination to present correctly your stories and pages, along with an example. Those rules are used in most of the books you can find on libraries, such as Harry Potter or Stephen King books for example.

The number of pages needing to be corrected is too important so it's necessary that each author makes the necessary corrections. Please use this page template so there won't be any problem with the printer:
http://www.comixpress.com/templates/CP_DigestPage_JPG.jpg
You can send the corrected pages to mr.artworksPLZ READ RULES NO EMAIL ADDRESSES.com.

Here is a model page I made using the printer's template. In case the page doesn't work, I detailed it .

.dialogues: you don't jump lines between two different speaking characters, you just go at the next line.
Incorrect
- "I hate blablabla", says Corycaly.

- "Me too", answers her dad.

Correct:
- "I hate blablabla", says Corycaly.
- "Me too", answers her dad.

. Paragraphs
You don't jump lines between paragraphs except if another scene begins. If the paragraphs belong to the same scene, you just go at the next like.
Incorrect
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.

blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.

hihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihi
hihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihi
hihihihihihihihihihi.

Correct
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.

hihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihi
hihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihi
hihihihihihihihihihi.

. Alineas
You put an alinea at the beginning of each chapter only.

To make short: you jump a line only between two scenes, an alinea only at the beginning of the chapter.

Oh, might that be a European thing? Let me see...

An alinea is a piece of text. You seperate it using double spacing, or with a tab. Like:

blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.

       blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.

The bold piece is an alinea.

An aline is a space you add at the beginning of a line.

right. we call that an indentation or indent. but the thing is your supposed to indent the beginning of each new paragraph. its how you tell one paragraph from another and is one of the fundamental rules of writing English. and really its the opposite of what you said to do. you dont indent the starting paragraph but you indent the rest. so with that in mind all you really need to say is for everyone to submit in single spaced.

so some examples of both script and novel forms.

SCRIPT:

TITLE

*ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
tttttttttt*
        *hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhh*
Character 1 - "blablablablablablablablabla"
Character 2 - "dadadadadadadadadadada"
      *ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
ggggggggggggggggg*

NOVEL:

TITLE

tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
tttttttttttttttt
      hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh "hahaha
hahahahhahaha"
"dadadadadaadada"
"bababababababaaba"
      ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
ggggggggggggg "yayayayayayyaya" gggg
gggggggggg.

so if that doesnt make sense say something and i'll actually post something written not just random letters.

I almost skipped this topic thinking it had nothing to do with me, that was close. Wait though, in script format you use paragraphs? That's...wait...I don't...gahh!!! It's just getting a little confusing for me now.

let me clear that up. if you're going to have a long description you'll probably want to break it up into different paragraphs. not only that if you indent the descriptions it will help set them apart from the dialogue. the problem is that there are no real grammatical rules applying to scripts. so really if all you want to do is single space the script style you already have it will work but wont be as pretty on the eyes.

Ah, so I can just indent the descriptions? Makes sense, and it would help. Easy to do, but what about that template Cory posted a link to? I'm not exactly sure how that works, or at least how to use it or set it up so my words won't be too close to the trim.
