Looking for places to publish and market manga
« on: March 17, 2023, 11:58:15 PM »
The requisites are:
Free to publish
Free for the readers
Publishing of mature non-explicit erotic or violent images
No copyright holding/No exclusivity
Accesible for the Cuban population
If at all possible, multiple languages in the same page

Here is my research so far:
Creating a wordpress blog: Got heavily spammed and forced to upgrade to premium.
Creating a free blog in a cuban platform: Hard to post images, random freezing of the page sometimes, not accesible with a VPN.
Creating a free blog in Blogger (Google's platform): Impossible to post multiple images at the same time (they get posted in reverse order every time). Tried uploading images with google photos, found the App insanely hard to use. Images from Googles servers are blocked in Cuba.
Tumblr: Got many errors when uploading images (due to censorship or otherwise errors in image size or format).
Instagram: really?
Tapas: Not accesible without a VPN.
Webtoon: No publishing mature content.

Remaining options:
Creating a manga magazine that gets published regulairly in PDF so i could in theory use Blogger to post the issues and compiled volumes of the running series, and Twitter/Facebook to market them. This is my favourite.

Youtube: It will not be hard to make my comics into soundless videos. Good choice, as i plan to open a YT channel for tutorials, short animated sequences and behind the scenes. I think YT allows some mature content as long as you dont cross the line?

Toughs?

Ok, i will go with the magazine since YT seems to censor some mature topics i use to write/draw about. Thanks for your toughful comments! Just kidding, i love you guys.

XD
maybe start off with the less mature topics on the standard sites like tapas, and then host your own website for everything else?
although I thought tapas and webtoon allowed a fair bit of mature? I dont know cos I don't browse them much but I always got that feeling.

Found a good hosting site that meets all the requisites so far, ComicFury. Its somewhat old fashioned and has a little too basic set of tools but allows for different languages, mature content (as log as you mark your work as such) and its free for anyone incluiding people in cuba.

Still, i want to use other more popular platforms to publish the least obscure of my works, like Webtoons, or even present them to pro editors and see how it goes. There are pro/amateur magazines and contests everywhere with varying levels of required quality.

In conclusion, comics is a hard market :-W

it's definitely hard to get popular/rich/famous even on those platforms, but at least you can get a foot in the door a lot easier so people can see your work. I plan to do it at some point, but I'm mostly in it for the fun of it :D
