Well I can't comment on where those specific artists got their ideas, but really, a good artist/writer can take any basic idea and make it more interesting. Working with a favourite genre, i.e. romance or action, and adding details to make a story or artwork unique rather than generic.

ultimately you can collect as many ideas as you like, but if you don't actually spend the time and effort and work on developing them, they wont grow into a full story. The more you practice the better you will become at writing or drawing.
