Like rowing a boat, we enter the future backwards. All we see are the scenes of the past, and no one cannot see the views of tomorrow

Exciting times ahead and happy for you. I was where you are decades ago.

The best advice I can give are 1) draw like your life depends on it. And 2) draw so much that it gets to be a habit, an itch you just gotta scratch. That when you're away from a pencil and paper. You're itching just to get back to them because you thought of something cool that you just gotta draw.

Those two are the catalysts that happily forced me to learn at age 25.

I wholeheartedly agree, that's the best and fastest way.
But quite difficult to get into that mindset, which is a skill in itself I think :P

@scruffyronin you mean you got good at 25 or that's when you started? How long did it take to build your skill?

I started at 25. Late bloomer. I was already a dad at the time too and with my second kid on the way. Learned anatomy first. And secondly, since my characters can't be naked all the time. Learned draping ie clothes. Third since they can't exist in limbo, studied background too and so forth.

3-4 years, I think. I was a professional 5 years later. But, I already knew what I knew then after 3. Just that making a portfolio and getting the word out takes time.

wow, well done!
That's sort of similar to me although you've made much faster progress. I've been drawing casually since I left school for about 7 years, but in the last 3/4 years I've taken a more serious approach, and most of what I know I've learnt recently. I'm kinda halfway there, I guess? who knows XD

Makes sense, I've done pretty much the same myself. A big step for me was composition, i.e. making shots interesting rather than just standing characters doing nothing.

And yes, even with the skill you don't automatically get a job, so getting yourself known is also an issue to be dealt with :P

Pick up tricks from your heroes. Learn their approach to talking heads, close-ups, action shots, different emotions, etc. That's how I did. And then, get ambitious. Don't settle for how your heroes did things, be playful from to time. I realized that I can't wow other people if I can't wow myself.

Yeah I'm planning to do a bit more studying of my favourite work once I have a better grasp of my general skill, which wont be too far away hopefully.
Although I've made a lot of progress by focusing on sketching my ideas separate to finishing them, so I can really go all out with crazy ideas and worry about drawing them correctly later on.
