House Myseros

The Banner of House Myseros

House Myseros controls the western valleys containing numerous rivers and streams pressed against the jagged western mountains from the west and nestled by the forested hills leading up to Mount Kyrie in the east. They reside in the ancient city of Myseria from which their house is named. The House bears the Imperial Eagle as their animal symbol, representing the house's far-reaching influence and history as descendants of the Old Empire. Nestled within the famed Valley of Paradise, the city of Myseros is named after the great Emperor Myseros of the Old Empire, and indeed the ruling House Myseros claims to be descended from him despite no clear evidence of any ties with the legendary emperor. With natural barriers of protection with plentiful rivers, streams, mountains, and forests on both sides, Myseros would seem to be the ideal location to build an empire, if not for its rather isolated position. Combined with the valley’s weaving shape and vast size, travel within Myseros could take days, if not weeks just to move from place to place. When the Old Empire collapsed, House Myseros was quick to establish itself as the heirs to the shattered lands of the Old Empire, and viewed any challenge to Myserian rule as an attack on Myseros itself. The Myserians moved first to assert their claims to the lands held by House Hallington, formally incorporating them into their new realm before waging war on the Kingdom of Felwin and then against the Kingdom of Cairlann. While Felwin conceded to serve as a vassal to Myseros much as the Hallingers did, Cairlann proved to be stubborn, and became an infuriating roadblock to Myserian plans of reunification. It wasn’t until Cairlann itself began to wage wars on its neighbors, soon to be known as the Wars of Expansion, that Cairlann went on the offensive, annexing the Kingdom of Felwin and installing House Veraldas as Felwuin's new rulers, before turning onto Myseros itself. House Myseros now begrudgingly bows down to Cairlann dominance, as the vast collection of Myserian texts of the Old Empire and skilled labor are put to work constructing massive projects across the Kingdom. Dams and reservoirs divert water to the thirsty southern farms of House Everite. Giant fortresses of stone and timber are erected at the frontiers of House Delmor. And grand structures such as the Citadel of Cairlann housing the Royal Family strike fear and awe to all who stand under its enormous shadow. Much like Cairlann, Myseros has not forgotten its roots. However, the Myserians are wise to learn from the annals of history. With the rise of the White Band Rebellion, Cairlann seems destined to repeat the disasters that brought the Old Empire down, and from its ashes a new power shall emerge. One with a Myserian at its helm.

House Kyrie

The Banner of House Kyrie

House Kyrie resides in the west-central alpine meadow highlands that surround the great Mount Kyrie, leading into the rocky mountains and the deep Valley of Paradise westward. The Great Stag serves as their animal symbol, representative of their position as protectors of Cairlann's traditions and culture, and a tribute to Cairlann's Founding Mother and Goddess of Creation Aena. They are a sister house to House Calicus, sharing blood to Prince Kalland via his grandmother. House Kyrie was once part of the Royal House of Calicus before a fracture between the ultraconservative members and its expansionist counterparts caused a rift within the house. The house split and formed a new Noble House under the name of Kyrie, occupying the highlands of the same name that border the city’s west field. Since then, the two houses have reconciled their differences, and the marriage between King Kastis and Queen Merryn formalized the two houses’ alliance. However, their trust with the dying House Calicus wanes as ambition from the foreign noble houses seek to take control of Cairlann, or worse, destroy it. The marriage of Queen Cecilia has already poised the rival House Bareth to take control of the throne with the birth of Prince Kalland, and with a realm weakened by war and rebellion, chaos seems inevitable. Perhaps it is time for the true heirs of Cairlann to rule as their ancestors had long spoken of, and preserve Cairlann’s legacy as a true Kyrenian would.

House Tullos

The Banner of House Tullos

House Tullos controls the cool, north-central temperate forests before the northern Arvaltan mountains from the ancient castle-city of Godwyn, separated from Cairlann by the great Virana River. Their House bears the carrion crow as their animal symbol, representing wisdom, vigilance, and their destiny as God's Chosen People. Once the great Royal House of the Kingdom of Godwyn, House Tullos has fallen from grace following their defeat by Cairlann during the Wars of Expansion. The Kingdom of Godwyn was once a barbarian tribe that inhabited the region before its conquest by the Old Empire during the Age of Antiquity. In the time they’ve spent under the Old Empire’s reign, House Tullos adopted many of the customs and traditions that their new rulers possessed. Laws, culture, religion, and most notably, martial prowess. The Tullosians merged the teachings of the Old Ways with the systems of the Old Empire, and the result was a fierce, yet disciplined people that retained the ruthless warrior spirit of their northern brethren with the machine-like training, tactics, and equipment of their overlords. When the Old Empire collapsed, Godwyn sought to unite the tribes of the Arvaltan Mountains under its banner against the encroaching threats of the southern outsiders and build a new world based on Tullosian principles. The tribes of Delmor and Goffren soon swore fealty to the growing Tullosian kingdom, but before it could seek to further expand northward, Cairlann had invaded. The defeat of the Kingdom of Godwyn spelt the end of Tullosian power. Surrendering to the Cairlannders was a dishonorable end in the eyes of the Godwynders, for their culture emphasized the importance of determination and perseverance against all odds as highly honorable traits. To die in battle was better than surrendering unscatched. Many traditionalists believed the Old Empire’s habits had tainted the Tullosians’ character, and made them susceptible to wicked Outsider thought. Some still hold hope of reviving the dreams of House Tullos and bringing about the great Kingdom of Godwyn as their ancestors once foretold, however the shame and dishonor of the past is a hard stain to wash away. House Tullos must prove themselves to their people that they are still worthy of Godwyn’s throne and restore the honor they once had to reclaim what they had lost before. Perhaps wrongs can be righted if they were to defeat the foe that dishonored them so: Cairlann.

House Hallington

The Banner of House Hallington

House Hallington controls the southeastern Arvaltan mountains from their city of Milios, notable for their many towering caverns, ravines, and rich ore deposits, complete with arid desert landscape, with a Mediterranean climate just over the mountain range leading to a nearby kingdom. Their house bears the griffin as their animal symbol, illustrating their bold valor and determination. The Hallingers served as vassals to the Myserian Dynasty long before the Old Empire’s collapse, providing a vital outlet to the southern seas in the form of their coastal trading hub Braedon. Coupled with their convenient access to raw materials within the Arvusian Mountains, the lands of House Hallington became a crossroads of industry and commerce. However, with the fall of the Old Empire, House Hallington had to rely on mercenaries to keep their businesses intact. Myseros, occupied with fighting Cairlann during the Wars of Expansion, could not be bothered to send troops to quell the increasing pirate raids on the Hallinger coastline. Eventually, foreign trade faltered, and the economy shuttered as the prized Hallinger gem Braedon was seized by a massive pirate fleet from a distant kingdom. House Hallington broke away from Myserian rule following the city’s loss as Myserian demand for troops and equipment took a heavy toll on the Hallingers, and soon joined Cairlann after the capitulation of Myseros. Recognizing their value as an industrial powerhouse, Cairlann entrusted House Hallington to provide the best arms and armor for their armies and were given special treatment as a reward for their services. Business once again boomed, and House Hallington soon grew fat with power as their coffers became filled by Cairlann’s war efforts. Their economic might puts all other Houses to shame, as their foundries constantly ship out new tools of war for their overlords and innovate upon their extraordinary designs. Yet, Cairlann’s reliance on the Hallingers to equip their armies may very well serve as their downfall. Their armies may march on the stomach of House Everite’s cornucopia, but House Hallington is its backbone. Tear it out, and Cairlann’s armies have nothing to stand on. House Hallington could very well turn its coin into soldiers, and prove itself to be a formidable competitor in the business of war.

House Goffren

The Banner of House Goffren

House Goffren controls the northeastern green mountains known for its many small lakes and hardy livestock, such as sheep and goat. Their seat of power resides in the ancient castle of Graehinstel. Goffren's animal symbol is the ram, a tough and resilient beast much like the people of Godwyn. House Goffren has been little more than a footnote in history, having served under the Tullosians before the Cairlannders invaded Godwyn. As stout, independent people accustomed to the rugged life of the high mountains and the vast wilderness, one easily forgets House Goffren’s roots as a fierce warrior society, infamous for their terrifying raids and stubborn adherence to the Old Ways. They are not above dousing themselves with a strong brew of elixirs and potions to boost their already-crazed bloodlust as they dance and scream to their ancestors. Cairlann has favored them as auxiliaries to their army, often to carry out their horrific acts on the field of battle, as their great king demanded. The Goffreigers have enjoyed relative peace under Cairlann’s rule, but the realm is abuzz with the sound of war in the distance. The Outsider Kingdom is weak from rebels within their lands, and with armies massing for war, perhaps House Goffren may seek to take advantage of the chaos. The Houses of Godwyn are no more Godwynder as they are now Cairlannder, and the other Noble Houses are occupied fighting each other. House Goffren may well seek to rally their blood-brothers of the northern tribes to their side and rule the Kingdom of Godwyn as it was destined to be.

House Ringold

The Banner of House Ringold

House Ringold controls the southeastern hills from the city of Olterion, famed for their cash crops such as fine wine and olive oil. They bear the horse as their animal symbol, a token of their renowned history in trade and commerce. The city of Olterion was established as an inland colony in the times of antiquity, with its settlers bringing with them the large, stout horses of the east. The land’s warm climate and rich soil made it ideal to raise crops of all sorts in the region, including the fine wine Ringold had become known for. When the Olterian colony was conquered by the Old Empire, much of the land was converted to raise cash crops to supply luxurious goods for wealthy patrons, with its excess shipped to ports across the eastern sea. The resulting trade made Olterion a bustling center of commerce connecting the roads of the Old Empire to the northern frontiers and to the eastern ports. Olterion’s horses became well known for their speed and endurance traveling the paved roads of the Empire, and eventually their steeds became a staple for the Empire’s cavalry. House Ringold was one of many noble houses that resided within Olterion at the time the Old Empire collapse, and they came to dominate the region’s politics. After swearing allegiance to the Kingdom of Vermaris, House Ringold aptly positioned themselves to benefit from control of the surrounding regions, establishing trade route monopolies and stockpiling their warehouses on key goods to profit handsomely on their inflated prices. This play on logistics would serve as a crucial factor in the eventual downfall of Vermaris during the Wars of Expansion. House Ringold would purposely sabotage the rival houses of Everite and Serana by delaying much-needed supplies or misdirecting communications between them and the ruling House Bareth to court favor with the Vermarian King, and when the other Houses failed to produce results, he would replace their officials with those loyal to House Ringold. Overnight, the problems that plagued the Noble Houses before would suddenly evaporate, and House Ringold would be handsomely rewarded for their “efforts.” However, Cairlann was not as foolish as Vermaris was when it took over. The old habits of House Ringold found its way into Cairlann’s bureaucracy, and upon discovering their corruption, executed many of its members and seized many of the assets accumulated by the Ringolders over generations. House Ringold’s reputation lies in tatters, its name ruined, and its great trade empire reduced to dust. The Ringolders seek vengeance for the wrongs committed against them, but they must tread carefully or risk the wrath of Cairlann upon them. With King Kallus’s death, however, the chance to redeem their lost glory may be upon them. House Ringold will take the Kingdom from the inside-out, and one day Cairlann shall wake up to find itself entirely under Ringolder control.

House Serana

The Banner of House Serana

House Serana controls the south-central shrublands from their castle of Sanntilith, leading into the grassy Great Cadamarian Plains. House Serana bears the snake as their animal symbol, representative of the namesake Serana river that the house takes its name from. House Serana’s history is shaped in turmoil, as their vital position between the Great Rivers and Great Plains of Cadamaria grants them control over the waterways that pass through Everitian farmlands. A sister house to House Everite, the lands of House Serana are known for the large pastures that complement House Everite’s Cornucopia crops. House Serana not only distributes the mineral-rich water to Everitian farmsm but serves as a buffer between Cairlann and Vermaris from its naturally-fortified positions across the Serana River. A highly-contested region during the Wars of Expansion, Seranian lands constantly changed hands between the Kingdoms of Cairlann and Vermaris over dominance of the Cadamarian Plains, with House Serana’s loyalty switching between the two at the most convenient of times. At one point, House Serana was given status as a sovereign region during a brief peace between Cairlann and Vermaris, with Seranian lands expanding almost triple its original size as part of concessions made by the two warring kingdoms. However, Serana’s sovereignty was short-lived, as Cairlann broke their vows soon after by seizing the poorly-equipped Seranian forts to use as their own base of attack against Vermaris. The Seranians have served as little more than pawns to greater powers for far too long, and although House Serana itself may not have the strength to contend with greater factions all on their own, their small glimpse as a kingdom may yet spark ambition within them. As a small caricature fighting against insurmountable odds, House Serana must look to underhanded and unorthodox tactics if they are to succeed as rulers.

House Ardenn

The Banner of House Ardenn

House Ardenn controls the east-central wetlands in the city of Shaliton between Cairlann and the eastern hills. Their house bears the marsh wren, representing their pride and vigilance against great odds. One of the oldest Noble Houses in the Kingdom of Cairlann, House Ardenn was the first to join Cairlann’s fledging realm during the Wars of Expansion, surrendering to Cairlann during the early days of the Cairlann-Vermari War. While Ardenn’s surrender spared much bloodshed and granted them favor within Cairlann, their treachery had not been forgotten by the old houses of Vermaris, and has since been deprived of the eastern riches they once were privileged to. Yet, the Ardennians have remained a hardy people. Their lack of military strength is made up by their high aptitude in politics and statesmanship, and the time they’ve spent within the Royal Courts of Cairlann had not been floundered. The People of House Ardenn have found their way within many of the Great Houses’ courts, for their bureaucratic skills are well-prized. With their inside knowledge, the Ardennians know everything about where, what, and who, are most valuable, and they may very well use that to rise to greatness one day.

House Calicus

The Banner of House Calicus

The Royal House of Calicus controls the river junction between the Serana and Virana rivers, where the famed fortress-capital of Cairlann stands. House Calicus bears the Golden Dragon, a symbol embodying Cairlann's hope, faith, and perseverance as it endures the unknown future ahead. House Calicus is the founding house of Cairlann. Rising from the ruins of the shattered Old Empire ages before, the Calians rebuilt their lost heritage and forged a new empire in its stead. The Calians have long remained true to their great military heritage and fighting prowess, having repelled many invasions in their history. Yet, having grown weary of war, House Calicus sought to end their ceaseless wars once and for all by waging wars of conquest themselves. Their risky venture paid off. Cairlann found its lands expanded tenfold, reaping bountiful lands and vast riches, yet their expansion has yielded new enemies both within and abroad. House Calicus fractured in the early days with House Kyrie, and the inclusion of more Noble Houses as a result of their conquests has created more rivals to Calicus rule. For now, House Calicus’s power is unquestionable and undefeated, as their many victories throughout Cairlann’s history have shown. But whether that remains true is yet to be seen. House Calicus must continue to prove itself as Cairlann’s Chosen or be doomed to the tomes of history.

Cairlannder-Godwynian War
Part of the Wars of Expansion

The Banner of the Kingdom of Cairlann during the reign of King Karsis the Pious

After the defeat of Cairlann's great foe Vermaris during the Cairlannder-Vermarian War, King Karsis rose to the throne of his late father, King Kendric the Proud, inheriting a realm that had tripled in size in the years prior. Yet many challenges still laid ahead for the young king. Vermarian separatists at the eastern shores had proclaimed themselves to be the true successors of Vermaris and had broken off their Barethian overlords to form a realm of their own. Meanwhile to the north, the Kingdom of Godwyn had taken full advantage of Cairlann's troubles to conduct incursions into Cairlann's northern borders during the war. Raiding and pillaging became commonplace, and Godwynian ambitions would suggest the conquest of Cairlann to be their next prize. Yet, Godwyn hadn't formally declared war at this point.

Seeking to unify a fractured realm weary of war and rebellion, King Karsis turned to his beliefs in the One Faith as Cairlann's new beacon of hope. The young king devoted a great deal of his work towards the religious unity of Cairlann and its neighbors. He sponsored missionaries, erected great temples of the One Faith in foreign lands, and established Crown Hospitals and Monasteries made openly available to all walks of life. His initial pacifist approach was met with mixed reactions. This was in part because he had allowed the separatists to secede from former Vermarian lands without reprisal, yet had gained a vast, loyal following among the common folk for his charitable works. Karsis even managed to court favor from the western Kingdom of Myseros, a realm notorious for their expansionist hostilities against its neighbors.

However, this pacifist approach would not last for long. Godwyn remained ever stubborn, clinging to their paganist beliefs despite repeated attempts from King Karsis to convert them in a vain effort to stop the raids. When his latest envoy to Godwyn insulted King Vegard, Vegard nailed the missionaries to crosses upside-down and subsequently expelled all Cairlannders from his lands. Karsis was furious. Unwilling to allow this injustice to go unpunished, King Karsis marched his army across the River Virana into Godwyn, sparking the Cairlannder-Godwynian War.
