Does anyone know any good Japanese Magazines for refrences?
« on: January 15, 2020, 07:27:11 PM »
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew any good Japanese magazines to use for references, like for clothes, People doing poses, hairstyles, buildings etc. I'm from the US and have no idea where to even begin looking.

Thanks

I'm afraid not, but I'm betting if you want a reference point you can't go wrong with fashion magazines (if that's the kind of thing you're looking for).

Will review stories upon request. My latest arc: http://goo.gl/KYgsfF

Yea, I thought of fashion magazines. A lot of the magazines that I came across were kinda pricey ($12 or more just for one!) I was hoping, since many manga artists use magazines for references, that someone here might be able to shed some light.

Thanks for responding

I have no idea too, but Pinterest has some really great fashion images. Korean models are especially cool

why specifically Japanese? and why magazines? just curious :P
poses and fashion and stuff are pretty similar regardless of country (especially fashion these days), and especially Japanese fashion is very standard.

fashion websites are a good second best bet. That's my source of inspiration these days.
You could try japanese websites although I don't know any off the top of my head.

Uniqlo is a Japanese brand, I mean is this kind of what you're after?
https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/women/outerwear/down-coats-jackets-vests

for buildings I roam around google maps on street view. It's pretty fun. I go to a different place each time in Japan.

The only physical reference book I have is a 2 inch thick spring fashion catalog, which is pretty awesome although I use it to prop up my screen at the moment :/

For fashion/poses images. Use a search engine or look up twitter etc.
The ones the Japanese artist use that is full of themed poses and references are 20 40 dollars plus shipping

i think fashion websites and as such may also may be of similar help, i dont know how you guys do, but using google image and google street view as suuper said helps a lot, since google image can be seem as a powerful tool that mix the images of many websites together, and google street image has almost any place you can imagine.
looks like that's it, got to go...

"why specifically Japanese? and why magazines? just curious :P"

I got the idea from seeing a mangaka on youtube using some. But in general, I thought it would be a good one-stop-shop of everything that I wanted references for. All things being Japanese.   ;D

I'm finding stuff on the net, but I guess I just kind of assumed a lot of manga artists used magazines for reference.

"for buildings I roam around google maps on street view. It's pretty fun. I go to a different place each time in Japan."

cool idea!

This thread led me to find some cool pictures in case anyone's interested.

Ahhh yes if you are producing a manga set in Japan then yes you'll want those references for sure.
I think unless you are really familiar with the setting it might be hard, but thank goodness for Google.
every artist is different in how they work and I assume they are equally different in how they get and store references.

There are Japanese ref books specifically made for artists, they're often called "pose books." A popular one is Pose Catalogue.

They are useful because they photograph the model from multiple angles. They do this frequently by rotating the person on a stand that spins on the ground, so the camera is stationary and the person's pose doesn't change. Although this isn't used for every situation.

You can buy a lot of those books here https://www.animebooks.com/lidrre.html

Here's some free (legal) resources, though:

http://boyspose.manpakudou.com/ (same person as above, but a bit hard to navigate the site)
https://www.viz-people.com/product-category/2d-people/?sidebar=no-sidebar   <they provide free pdf catalogs that show all the poses e.g. http://www.samples.viz-people.com/catalogs/Casual_v9_Catalog.pdf

Go look at FRUiTS magazine. They're discontinued, but you can find them on Instagram. It's a really good fashion magazine.

Also Dazed Korea is a good fashion magazine too. It's not Japanese, but I  do think it's good to look at other people's fashion too. You can find them on Twitter.

Hope this helped :P
