watching Black Clover (skim watching it, spamming skip 5 seconds forward haha) and man Asta is every bit annoying as I thought he would be, it took 20 eps just to get used to his voice. The animation quality is pretty awful, with a lot of bad faces and not very smooth movements.
I think anime has advanced to the point where they know how to just put enough effort in it to produce it, and not get top notch level animation. It does vary from studio to studio, but I get the feeling, much like every other industry, that once you know how much you can get away with you'll never put more effort/time/money in that you need to.

Finished Ao no Kanata: Four Rhythm. An annoying genki girl main for the most part and nothing really memorable. a nice concept with the flying shoes but that's it.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

It was flawed, it had a long stretch of boring episodes, it was stupid but man was Gundam Wing one fun series.

For 49 episodes you get a ton of 90's angst, characters who constantly want to die and really awesome mechs. This show was campy and there were a lot of parts that left me going "wow that's stupid but okay". I felt it was all part of the show's tone. I dropped it for a while and I found it hard to get through the middle part of the show. However it came out swinging with the last 9 episodes. This was a really awesome final arc that was satisfying and had a ton of cool sci-fi stuff. The show feels like it has three distinct parts and the final part was really rad. I liked the characters, Noin was my favorite. The Gundam pilots are all different shades of 90's angst. Zechs however was basically Char's entire character arc in one series so he felt like a pale imitation. Relena was...just weird.

I think Wing has the best Gundam designs ever. The Epyon is right behind the Zeta as my favorite Mobile Suit, it's so 90's but in all the right ways. The Wing Zero is so awesome and I love when it does it's silly spin attack. All the Gundams are distinct and the grunt suits are really cool also. They didn't slack with these designs. Zeta was on a next level of cool but the designs got out of control by the end and the late game villain suits were downright silly. Wing on the other hand continued to bring more and more badass designs.

If this show had better production values it would be a dream. The mid 90's had that awesome grit, things are darker (literally, the show uses shadows on the screen for some reason and I love that). There are a lot of moments of characters typing and computer screens flickering. When we get the more technical shots of the Gundams it is OVA level robot porn. The character designs are good and I like the outfits, especially when Noin wears a cowboy top in space for no reason. The issue with Wing is that is feels cheap and there is a lot of stock footage and just so-so animation. The last two episodes were animated pretty well however.

Both OPs were just amazing. They are songs that hype you up, I never skipped them. "Just Communication" is a great song and I love the pre-chorus shots of the Gundams facing away. "Rhythm Emotion" however doesn't appear until the last 9 episodes and it's even better. The animation during this OP is so cool and man oh man when that song starts playing at the end of episodes it really hits. I love the late 90's house keyboards and arcade racing game beats. The ED is good also. I watched the dub and I'm happy I did because it was cheesy and fit the tone of the show.

Overall Wing was flawed but it made up for that with it's tone and extremely cool designs. It was a drag to get through parts of but at the end I'm happy I watched it and I had fun with it.

Totally agree with the middle being weird. I can confirm that over time you will basically forget it exists, and almost remember Wing as two separate shows. The beginning and the end are so incredibly different for the show's universe and where it stands it's barely recognizable. Remember how big and bad Oz is at the start of the show? Remember how they barely matter by the end? Freaking wild.

It's a shame Waltz was such a let down story wise. I would have loved to see the AC timeline but like, 25 years down the road, when all the he main characters have hit middle age and are dealing with a permanently changed world.

Even now Wing feels like two different shows. There was fighting boy meets girl in the beginning and then the Post-Eva mech Wing Zero comes in and things change up. Still almost a week after watching I keep thinking how awesome the last 9 episodes were. A week after watching 00 nothing stuck or rattled around in head as much as that cool as Hell shot they kept showing in the recap of Zechs looking into space from the Libra with all the controls flashing around him. Or the beeping in the second OP. That arc will go down for me as one of the most memorable parts of an anime I've ever seen. I'll share my thoughts on Endless Waltz now also since I feel like typing.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz

This entire movie was made just for the famous scene where Heero gets into the Wing Zero. I'm convinced that they built everything around that moment and that moment alone because every stupid thing that happens is done so Heero can have the most unnecessary yet most badass entry scene possible.

This movie had no reason to happen, it didn't do anything interesting with the story and in fact it just raised more questions that it didn't feel like answering. They took a series that had a perfectly fine ending and sloppily tried to add more. The pacing is a mess, there isn't enough time to develop the new villains and explain what was really going on. The opening is overwhelming, switching from flashback to flashback, making you wonder what was happening. This was such a lazy movie in terms of story.

The new Gundams are the biggest thing in this film and they still mess that up. They could have easily come up with a good reason for the new designs but instead they just pretend the Gundams always looked that way, even in the flashback scenes. Rather than the whole "we must banish our Gundams only to get them back 10 minutes later" they could of either upgraded the old suits in the beginning or they could of been destroyed in battle and then, much like the introduction of the Zeta Gundam, someone bring the pilots the new suits on the battlefield to save the day. Honestly anything, even the most cliche thing, would of been better than what happened here. They change the meaning of Operation Meteor, they give Trowa a weird new backstory, Zechs...ZECHS...HOW...don't worry they don't bother to explain anything and oh better give him a new Tallgeese to make another model kit of and then Mariemaia...honestly forget the story in Endless Waltz. It's really bad

The animation however, oh my God. This is an absolute beauty of mech action. The fight scenes are wonderful and everything just looks amazing. I loved every frame of this movie, the characters and Mobile Suits look outstanding here. The Wing Zero and Deathscythe were the only new designs I liked however. The blue Heavyarms was silly. That said they are animated so well. There is sadly no big bad mobile suit for them to fight which sucked. It was all cannon fodder. The Wing Zero was wasted, it had only a small scrap when it should of had a huge centerpiece mobile suit battle.

Let's talk about the scene where Heero enters the Wing Zero again though. This is one of the best anime scenes I have ever watched. It's so over the top. Heero had no tactical reason to ask for his Gundam to be sent into space when everyone else got theirs like normal people. He had no reason to have to jump out of a shuttle and just barely catch on to the suit which is so perfectly covered by it's wings (done only for a dramatic reveal). You got this awesome song playing, cool cockpit scenes, the classic one hand typing, buttons being pressed and then boom the Wing Zero flapping it's wings. This is one of those all time classic anime moments.

I wish Endless Waltz was more than just cool moments but sadly that's all this movie is. The story sucks, it had no reason to be made, but hey man atleast the animation was really good. This was actually the first Gundam thing I ever watched. In 2008 a curious me who had just seen Gurren Lagann and Full Metal Panic wondered what this Gundam thing was but thought it looked boring. That didn't stop me from pretending I watched the series (I included Wing and SEED in message board profiles that listed "favorite shows" despite never having watched an episode then). I got the movie from the library of all places and had no idea what was going on and stopped watching after maybe 10 minutes or so. An exciting first experience.

Mobile Suit Gundam F91

A master class into how to not make a movie.

This wasted potential attempts to cram 50 episodes worth of story into only 2 hours and fails miserably in both pacing and making sense to the audience. and the thing is this could of been a pretty good series but the movie does a horrific job with the story. This is the exact same issue with Char's Counterattack, only that movie had a purpose and every character's motivation made sense. It was about a very clear clash of ideologies between Amuro and Char. But this movie just doesn't make sense. Crossbone is not explained, Cecily's actions aren't logical because we don't get to know her, and sometimes you have no idea what colony a scene is set in!

Over and over this movie will suddenly cut to a character in a completely different location then the last scene. There were so many time I was confused about the locations. There is absolutely no time to get to know the characters and ultimately it feels like wasted animation. You have to really pay attention to what's going on and hone in on every line of dialogue. This is a recap movie from Hell of a show that never existed.

That said the animation was God tier, atleast in the opening. Okay let's talk about the first 20 minutes. OH MY GOD! Absolutely insane and amazing war horror in a colony. This opening was gripping, extremely intense and it just hits you with the full force of the brutality of the war. It does this in a way War In The Pocket wasn't even able to do. The opening was so crazy and cool! I couldn't believe it, I was looking at the screen in awe at the animation and the chaotic disorder being presented. Everything is just going crazy and, wow, the first chunk of this movie is a masterpiece.

You can pinpoint the exact moment it stops being this good though. It goes from an actual movie's pacing to it's hyperdrive attempt at storytelling. The animation is still pretty solid throughout, a lot I felt it got cheap by the end. The F91 Gundam wasn't all that cool in my opinion. I don't think it looked all that good and it was nothing special compared to the Zeta and Nu Gundams from before. The Crossbone suits were badass though and looked very intimidating. There was a lot of great animation in this movie. and honestly if this was a show it could of been good. The end of the movie was a really nice bit but I wasn't invested in the drama and I didn't care. So it didn't have the power it would of if it was at the end of a 50 episode series.

The dub is top quality for F91. Absolutely fantastic work! This movie has just enough going for it to warrant a watch but it really is a shame that it started so good but became a disaster. The one and only reason to watch this is for the animation, especially the opening sequence. Amazing how Gundam movies fail at pacing. Endless Waltz was way too fast in the beginning, Char's Counterattack came at us from the middle part of a story we were never told and this movie was like a 2 hour 50 episode speedrun.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam

This is why I love anime. The most ridiculous things somehow made epic. The most insane and stupid ideas somehow so gripping. This is a series that achieves it's purpose and it was an absolute joy to watch. It was tight and so over the top but yet I cared about all the characters and the story. I was invested, I almost cried at the end and I got goosebumps so many times. G Gundam has what made me get into anime in the first place. Hot blooded giant robot pilots yelling and fighting things with insane attacks. When this show gets real it gets real. This was an absolute blast and certainly my favorite Gundam series yet. It's a solid 9/10 for me.

From the start this show is fun but at first I enjoyed how silly it was. More and more I realized I was really invested and characters I first thought were dumb throwaways I ended up liking. The story is simple but it has a fair share of twists and was well paced. There were only a few episodes I didn't like. It has two distinct halves, both ending with exciting heart racing sequences. G Gundam taps into the ape brain enjoyment of cool anime things. It never gets old seeing Domon do a shining finger, and despite how silly a lot of stuff is the show never feels like comedy. Everything is played seriously but not too seriously, it has perfect tone.

The greatness of this show is achieved by the dub. This is a brilliant dub because it gave the show the over the top quality it needed. Domon's voice actor Mark Gatha goes full force and captures his hot blooded energy perfectly. You get so many silly but awesome deliveries, he was a perfect fit. Master Asia's voice actor Dave Pettitt was great also. The cheesiness of the dub was fitting, it was a good dub for what the show was. The artstyle is kind of silly but cool. A lot of the character designs are goofy and oh man the Gundams. There are so many hilarious designs like Holland's windmill suit, Mexico's sombrero wearing catcus suit, America's gun wielding football player and so much more. Happy Canada got represented but our's should of been a hockey player.

The animation was pretty decent and kept consistent. The soundtrack was excellent! Both opening songs were top quality. "FLYING IN THE SKY" is a hype anime hero song, it's extremely good and fits the show perfectly. It is one you absolutely cannot skip for it's exciting energy. "Trust You Forever" was a very fitting song for the second half of the show as well. All in all every single element of this show came together wonderfully to create such a unique tone. A show that could be so insane and yet so awesome.

This is simply a great time. It's by no means a "Gundam" series, it's so different and that's good. I loved watching this series. It has it's own appeal, it's not like the original and Zeta that are great epics. G Gundam has the magic of anime that made me love the medium to begin with. It's an exciting and ultra fun show.

Honestly man, I'm just surprised it wasn't a mounty. Given how England had a beefeater Gundam and France's was just a musketeer.

watched:
-Steins;Gate 0 - A very good watch and a lot of epic moments.
-SAO Alicization - I like SAO so this was just another nice sequel, nothing too special, but better than GGO if you ask me, it felt a bit more like the original season. I'm watching the current one now.
-Black Clover - up to date now. A few epic moments but mostly a run of the mill shounen.
-Nejimaki Seirei Senki Tenkyou no Alderamin - completely forgot about this one I watched a while back. Quite interesting.

Watched the Ghibli films again on Netflix. They're my main inspiration for my stories, so it was refreshing to see them all again and just soak in nostalgia.

Also decided to rewatch Mob Psycho, or rather finish watching it cause I didn't reach the end the first time around (not sure why).
No one is perfect . . . that's why there's erasers and extra paper.

I was surprised to find I had missed that a second season of Mob Psycho 100 had come out, I'm, watching that now. So far interesting but unless a major plot hits like the first season it wont be as good I think.

I finished watching:
-Enen no Shouboutai
Very good animation, the first anime for a while that didn't keep distracting me with badly drawn inbetween frames and the like. action sequences are very good and BG is some of the nicest I've seen for a while. Watching Season 2 now but I've heard it's not as good so far.
-Gunslinger Girl
I had hoped that this would be a sort of classic, but I found it was a bit short of something, there seemed to be not much going on and if there was an overall plot I missed it. Feels like it could have had both prequel and sequel episodes, like I was watching the middle of a series only. It was very emotionless (maybe that was the point), so I found it hard to connect with anyone or anything.
-Tensei shitara Slime datta Ken
A decent Isekai Reincarnation story. The MC being OP is handled nicely and there's plenty of humor and light parts. It feels just like the manga.
-Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu
Very mixed feelings on this. I loved the first half and really thought it would enter my anime toplist, but the second half fizzled out for me. I think the idea was that
Spoiler
the MC losing himself and finding himself
was part of the major story, and I dont really care for that sort of development, so it just annoyed me more than anything. I dont think it was badly written, it just went a different direction to what I wanted to see.
-Chuunibyou demo koi ga shitai! Ren.
not as great as the first season but close. I think lack of development startes to get annoying at some point, even if the idea is that the character is slow to grow, if you watch a whole season and nothing happens you start to doubt what the plot is meant to be. Still enjoyable.
-Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator
having Accelerator as an antihero was a really good watch and gave him a bit more of a personality I think. The overall plot was nothing special but it was a good watch.

Currently watching:
-Enen no Shouboutai S2
-FLCL (finally)
-Jigoku Shoujo Mitsuganae
-Mob Psycho 100 II
-Joshiraku (no high hopes for this but should be light)
-Toaru Kagaku no Railgun T
amongst others

It's nice to be watching some anime as they air again, it's been maybe 6+ years since I did that.

So G Gundam has been an extremely hard anime to follow up. The show was so good and I loved it so much that other anime isn't as good. That is easily a new Top 15 anime for me, no doubt. It was pure fun and I haven't watched a show that had that sheer level of enjoyment in so long.

I watched the first 23 episodes of Hunter X Hunter and it's quite good! I have a few issues, such as the lack of actual battles and Gon getting by on his spirit alone but the show is clearly not an average shounen. It subverted my expectations instantly when you realize the goal of the show isn't for the characters to get their hunter's license but instead the adventures that come after. They set up a tournament arc but it's not at all what I thought it would be. I like that about the show.

I did enjoy the episodes and I lot the main cast a lot. This is a show I think I'll watch casually among other series, it's something to go back and forth to. I like the feel of the series, I'm just hoping for some real battles and such. 148 episodes isn't bad, I haven't seen an anime over 100 episodes since I watched Fairy Tail in 2013. Since I've watched all these Gundam series recently I think I'm good.

I watched 8 episodes of Slayers and I liked it but it didn't get me engaged fully. It was funny and the tone is very good. It has that 90's anime charm and Lina is a great character. I always knew the show was famous for it's dub but clearly it's just for Lisa Ortiz as Lina, who does really good. But the rest of the cast is not on the same level, some voices are outright emotionless and bad. I love the fish character though, he appears in two episodes and was an absolute legend. I might go back and watch the rest of this show at some point because I did like these episodes.

I watched one episode of After War Gundam X and it was...kind of boring. I keep trying to watch the first episode of Gundam Seed because I have a strange curiosity about the series despite my rock bottom expectations.

Personally I've been watching Deca-Dence from this current season of anime, and woah buddy strap in.

The premise they set up in the first episode is pretty simple. It starts kind of run of the mill as essentially sci-fi attack on Titan. All of humanity is stuck inside a roving fortress because the outside world is full of monsters. People fight the monsters by personally flying around with fancy jetpacks and stabbing the monsters to death. Also, the giant fortress city can turn into a giant fist to punch the monsters which are too big to fight by hand (arguably making this show 10x cooler than AOT right off the bat).

Spoilers incoming!

In episode 2, it's revealed that a bunch of characters from episode 1 aren't human at all! They're actually little chibi robots controlling human bodies. They live in the bowels of the roving city, and the actual humans don't know they're down there. The humans are unwittingly captive in a distant future where robots have turned the planet into a giant real world MMO essentially just because they're bored. So now we've got two main characters. One is the plucky young girl who wants to be a soldier, and the other is actually a chibi robots pretending to be a grizzled old timer.

And let me tell you, the show does not suffer in the least because of it. It's unlike anything I've ever seen in the genre. Somehow the show essentially crams in two entirely different art styles and pulls it off. You never could have imagined so much drama coming from a little robot shaped like a pill.

That's just the first two episodes. I swear if this thing doesn't get a second season I'm picking up the source material however I can.

Black Lagoon (Re-Watch)

Black Lagoon was the 4th anime I ever watched and I haven't seen it since, 8 years ago. The Roberta's Blood Trail OVA overshadowed the series for me but watching both seasons again I have to say this is a fantastic show that is intensely rewatchable. It has a well balanced tone, delivering both ridiculous gun fighting fun and serious character moments. It's a view into the underworld and the cast is a crazy bunch. There is also a lot of variety among the 24 episodes and it could easily go on and on while continuing to be interesting.

The best part of Black Lagoon is the characters and their interactions. Rock is the character the audience can relate to the most being the "normal" guy of the bunch and throughout the series we see him change but not lose his humanity. Rock's relation with Revy is compelling as he brings out different sides of her. They have many memorable exchanges, especially the explosive argument around episode 8. I love when Revy and Eda work together as well, their bickering is so entertaining. Roberta is my favorite character, she's the most wicked chick there is. The shy timid maid who's actually jacked and basically superhuman, a classic. Black Lagoon has the most badass women in anime history, especially Balalakia who has such a powerful presence.

Dutch and Benny are great as well but they're less focused on. There are just so many memorable characters in this anime and even more memorable scenes. Rewatching this was just "oh ya this part!" over and over. The last six episodes of the second season are the best, especially Revy and Genji's fight. That was the biggest moment for me. The Second Barrage is a big step up in quality with 3 great mini arcs. It goes from horror to wackiness to a full on Yazuka mafia war. The only arc that felt lackluster was the short island arc in the first season, which I think needed another episode to really pay off.

I like that Black Lagoon is not an overly serious show, it has a lot of relief and moments of pure fun. The show just breezes by, it's easy to binge watch because of how entertaining it is. The dub is pretty good and gives it that edginess that makes it so enjoyable. Brad Swaile was really great as Rock and also Light in Death Note. Maryke Hendrikse was just brilliant as Revy. She was so crude and captured the character perfect. Patricia Drake as Balalaika was incredible as well. The cast was all good for the most part. Though there were a lot of lines about giving people extra assholes...just an observation.

The soundtrack has some good songs, especially "Tear Drops to Earth", the slower reflective song that just hits every time it plays. I used to listen to that song a lot. One time when I walked to Tims in especially cold weather it came on and really hit home, haha. Black Lagoon was fun then and in a way it's ever better now. The show is just so fun. Of course I will rewatch Roberta's Blood Trail now. About time, I have praised it as one of my favorite anime things ever so we'll see how it holds up for me. I'll just say rewatching Black Lagoon was a great idea!

Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail (Re-Watch)

So my memory was a bit wrong on this OVA. I watched this after the main series and as time went on I thought of it as amazing and the best Black Lagoon had to offer but the only scenes I remembered where ones with Roberta. I completely forgot basically everything else and in a way it almost felt like watching a lot of this for the first time.

This is a much more somber and serious arc. The story is a lot bigger than just Roberta's revenge, it gets into who's really controlling Roanapur and how the events of season 2 sour Rock. He is a lot more sinister in this OVA. It's not the most exciting thing, the action is awesome but it did drag a bit for me. Every scene with Roberta was fantastic, she was an absolute beast here. Like that insane scene where she crushes Shenhua's blade with her teeth. All the violence really shocked me the first time I saw, so much I didn't see coming. There are a lot of bits that stuck in my memory, mainly the...finger scene. But I remember that scene wrong as well, in fact the whole ending played out different in my memory. The ending here was...a little bit confusing honestly.

I didn't enjoy this as much the second time and compared to the TV series it was not as good. The show is a lot more fun and enjoyable, even the last arc in Second Barrage is lighter. Roberta's Blood Trail has a bigger story and it was overall pretty good but not amazing like I thought. Fabiola is one of my favorite characters in the series though and like I said every scene with Roberta is just so cool. There was a lot of good character development for Rock as well. We also get to learn a little bit more about Dutch.

When I first watched it the dub wasn't out yet. I bought the Blu-Ray when it came out later and this is the first time I watched it, nearly 7 years later. The dub was good, I think everyone gave a better performance than the series. The animation was basically the same as the show just more consistent and without any big drops in quality. So ya, Roberta's Blood Trail is good but this time around I enjoyed the show a lot more.
