Not sure what you mean by compromise, but when researching different things you can get inspiration for stories, either by copying existing ideas as-is - e.g. putting a character called Zeus, who is a god, in your story, or copying smaller elements, e.g. a character who can fire a lightning bolt, but otherwise is an original character.
Every story every written has elements that appear elsewhere in other works, either in very small ways, or in larger ways. So to write your own story, you can look at similar works and see what you like, and try and write something similar, or look at completely different works and see what interesting things they do that you can put a different spin on.
There's no correct way to research or any magical method that works for everyone, so you'll need to find out what works for you - reading books in the library on old legends, researching wiki pages of your favourite animes, etc.
Most stories have a very small central "core" of the story which can be expressed in one line, "A hero fights to protect the safety of his town from criminals", "a boy is on a search to find his parents who abandoned him at birth". Everything else is an embellishment that makes that core unique and interesting. The setting, the characters etc.
