I understand that time for an artist is important, which is why I am willing to do money upfront.  I'm not saying that 50% is too high either, but I would need to change how the payout would have to happen to ensure there is an incentive to complete the pages suggested.  This way, both the artist can protect their time, while I protect my capital.  Also, I made sure to save all of the money this project requires, including extra, so not being able to pay should not happen unless banks start going under.

An example would be, if the goal was 2 pages for the month, pay 50% the 2 page cost ($100 and $50) at the beginning of the month.  Then upon completion of the 2 pages, pay the other 50%, and if before the first of the next month, add the extra completion bonus of $100 to each artists' pay.  If not, then the extra is just lost.  Then I would probably have a meeting to find out what happened, and determine what the goal for the new month should be.

I would also like to include an incentive for going beyond the goal as well.  Like after completing the month's goal, if an other page is completed, I would pay an additional 50% of the page cost as a performance bonus. ($150 and $75 for the page)

Upwork sounds interesting, I could take a look into it.

I am willing to negotiate some up front pay, but that would require additional stipulations as I could just end up losing money paying like that.  ie. I am told that 3 pages will be done for the month.  Pre-pay $150 to the primary artist and $75 to the assistant, but at the end of the month only 1 page is actually completed due to a family/pet/medical/random emergency.  Does that mean I just lose the extra $75 I already paid, plus if I am paying upon completion of the page, I pay another $75 between both artists?  That would mean that I lost $150 for that month.

I am willing to change the reimbursement to a completion bonus, so if the page goal for the month is reached, each artist will get paid the extra $100.

For the concept art, the price can be discussed to make sure the amount of work required for it feels amicable.  I know the price for doing concept art can vary depending where the artist lives, so I want to make sure we can all find a reasonable price to work with.

I have worked with an artist before, but that was around 2017.  It was for a different project, and we worked together for a few months.  Unfortunately I had a medical issue that caused me to lose my stream of income, and left me disabled for a few years.  However, I have recovered and resumed working, so I can now pursue this venture.

In terms of references to other manga I would say there are three for different reasons.  Fullmetal Alchemist and Mashle: Magic and Muscles for character designs and their expressions and quality.  The third is Berserk more for the inclusion of shading and backgrounds as the locations the stories take place in should play a role in the feeling it gives the reader, as well as the setting being quite close.  I don't expect the same level of quality as Berserk, Kentaro Miura was in a league of his own.

If there is interest in the project I will do things such as polling to determine what story has the largest interest, and work on that story as the next chapter.  I will rerun the poll after each chapter is completed until each story has hit the end of the story line.  So yes, this will be a long-term serial project if there is interest.

Can we hear a little a little more about the project?
Are you wanting black and white? Color?
Is there a specific timeframe/deadline for each page?
Do these demos have completed scripts?
Do you have completed character references or is concept art involved?
Are the artists in charge of everything from storyboards to word bubbles?
What method of contact will be used?

The project will be 5 opening chapters for stories that take place in the same world, but vastly different places so they will not impact each other.  These stories are:

The Devil of Murkwood - A father/daughter story diving into the divine and profane influences on their world.
The Iron Bear - A rescue story that looks into the Spiritual aspects of the world.
The Knight of Stone - A finding strength story focused more on the learned/acquired magics of the world.
The Deadman's Search for Redemption - A revenge story looking at the relationships between species of the world.
The Star Trader - A debt repayment story diving into the nondivine outside forces that impact the world.

As for Black and White vs Color, that depends more on the artists.  If they are more comfortable with manga styles then Black and White is fine as there are typically different things being emphasized with manga.  If they prefer more of a Comic style of drawing, then color is preferred.

As for a timeframe/deadline per page, obviously I would like faster results, but I know this stuff takes time for quality.  Faster completion means the artists get paid faster, and I can find out if there is any interest for the project sooner.  Ideally, I would like to see about 1 page per week, but as long as at least 2 high quality pages are done per month, I can live with that.

I have posted some of the story ideas in the manga ideas section of the forum, but I do have scripts for the demos.

Unfortunately I do not have any completed references.  However, I can provide images for reference/jumping off points.

The story boards can be done by the artists if they choose, but I know the beats and main points that I would like to hit with the stories.   The word bubbles will be up to the artists.

Contact methods will be based off of whatever works best for all parties, so that all can be included in discussions and possible meetings.  Voice calls over things like discord or skype and email are preferred.

I second those questions and add my own:

• How/when will the payment be sorted/will there be an "official" contract etc?
  Especially as you mention "several" manga one-shots that you're after.
  i.e. paid per page every time a page is completed, or what.
• And also, what exactly is the expected workload difference between main artist and assistant? I assume that will vary somewhat on their specific skillset and what they want/are comfortable doing. (Hence your mention of co-artists as an option)
• As a second option, can an artist be both main and assistant? as someone who has single handedly worked on a comic and also worked in a team, solo is much more preferable. (Also extra pay for doing 2 jobs  )
• Do snacks count as (disposable single-use performance enhancing) equipment? (semi-serious)

Payment will sent as soon as the completed page is received, and the reimbursement is paid at the end of the month based on any receipts sent during the month.  There will not be an official contract, but the artwork is not to be sold by the artists.  However, the artwork can be used as reference or included in the artists' portfolio after the project is completed and presented.

The workload difference for manga between the primary and assistant should be the primary artist does the base drawings while the assistant does things like touching up, cleaning up lines, adding effects, or generally adding on the finishing touches to the work.  For comics the primary artist does the base drawings while the assistant focuses on the coloring, touch ups, and other finishing touches.

If you are confident in your skills to be able to do it all yourself, I am more than happy to pay you $150 per page, as long as the quality is still there.

Snacks unfortunately do not count as equipment as it needs to be directly used when working on the project.  However, if you need something like coffee or an energy drink to help you maintain focus while you work, then I will consider that as something directly involved in the project.

I am looking for an artist or pair of artists to draw about 5 demo manga/comics based on their preferred art style.  The demo manga/comics will be between 5-10 pages each and will be in the darker medieval high fantasy setting.  These will be used to start a kickstarter/patreon to see the interest in the projects.

I am looking to pay the primary artist $100 per page with a reimbursement for materials.  For the assisting artist I will be looking to paying $50 per page with the same reimbursement opportunity.  If the artists prefer to be co-artists rather than primary and assistant, I can do $75 per page with the reimbursement for each.  I would also prefer the artists to know each other or have worked together at least once, so there isn't any issues.

The reimbursement will be up to $100 per month for any materials used for this project.  This will include the cost of digital subscriptions and physical items.  If you have any questions please feel free to let me know.

I have found myself also fascinated with isekais lately.  What kind of isekais do you enjoy more?  Reincarnated or directly transported, and overpowered new comer or the weak but crafty newbie?  I think all of them have their certain charms, but I tend to like ones that let the character grow into the world rather than shape the world to them.

I look forward to seeing your work.  I know you mentioned getting into animation, is that something you are also looking to work with, or will you just be sticking to still art?

Having a lot of story ideas can sometimes be a hassle.  How I complete my stories is to think of where and how I want that particular story to end.  I can look at the beginning of the story and the end and decide what kind of challenges should the character face while trying to reach their goal.

Hello Suuper-San,

I read your story "The Furnace."  I like your idea of the a manmade city being constructed to keep humans alive after a catastrophic event.  The idea of constructing something to solve a problem or set of problems that were self created always gives me a feeling of irony.

As I read through it, I did notice a few inconsistent parts of the story.

1) It is mentioned that the furnace needs to be running at all times of the day, but it is later mentioned that everyone takes breaks at the same time for the same length of time.

2) It is also revealed that he takes a second to wipe his brow, but is scrutinized immediately for doing so.  If there is no room for error or slowing of productivity, wouldn't there be some kind of hat/head covering made to maximize the amount of work someone can do without needing to stop.

I liked the story, and will continue to look through the others.

Thank you for taking the time to read through my story.  I also enjoy the more dark and medieval settings in stories.  I find it gives a little more room for imagination and creativity to my stories.

I don't think that it is nitpicky to ask about something that seems to be inconsistent.  I intended to make the first chapter more of a introduction to Malcom and what his base abilities are.  However, the body maker needs the limbs to remain intact for his plans.  So in order to ensure the limbs do not dissolve or turn to ash, he needed to ensure Malcom's limbs didn't regrow.  He did this by using a specific type of metal to cover where the limb was cut off to keep it from regenerating, which would cause the limb he has to turn to dust.

In later chapters, I plan to expand more upon Malcom's powers and where they come from.

I do not think about it like you are trying to poke holes or anything, it is more that I need to provide more details about what has happened.  Murkwood is a logging town, established in the area due to the intersection of two of the eight primeval leylines.  The leyline of earth and life intersect not too far from Murkwood creating ironwood trees, that regrow every year.  These trees are so valuable that multiple different churches, who would normally not associate with each other, established points of operation and training further down the main road in peace.  They utilize this wood to make extremely durable vehicles, outposts, and furniture/equipment used by other magic users.

The chapel itself, as well as all of the other homes in Murkwood are created primarily out of regular wood, as the leyline of earth makes the ground far too difficult to alter or excavate from, apart from loose stones or rocks that can be easily pulled from the earth, but the leyline of life makes the normal trees grow to full size in a matter of months.  So the main character kicked the man through a wooden wall, not one made from stone.

As for the speak with dead spell, it does require an intact skull, or one that still resembles its original shape.  Most of the bodies outside of the church, are either missing the head (it was obliterated), or it is crushed so severely that it is rendered unusable for the spell's purpose.

The main character's strength is tied to the powerful emotions of anger and hatred and the acts of violence and killing, and are amplified greatly if they are directed at him or if he does the killing.  This is due to his lineage consisting of 1/4 devil of destruction (bone devil).  This is why his body looks to be made of porcelain, just like how shark skin contains microscopic teeth, when in this form he is entirely encased in bone.  While this does make him far more durable, it also stops him from being able to maneuver as quickly or release heat from his body.  The heat builds inside of him, and the longer he remains in that form, the hotter his insides gets.  He can open his mouth to vent some of the heat, but it is only a temporary fix to the problem, and will eventually force him back into his original form, or his human form.  Also, the speaking without a mouth is from the other 1/4 of his lineage that isn't the 1/2 that is human.

I can delve deeper into the backstory of the main character to help anyone understand what and where he gets this power from, but its quite long for this post and doesn't really get explored until much later into the main character and girl's journey.  It looks at the value of sentient souls to devils and demons of this world and a conflict between the devil lord of secrets and lies and the keeper of souls who presides over thought and progression.

Hello J.J.Watts,

I have to say that I really like these types of stories, because it gives you a lot to work with both in terms of the physical and emotional questions.  Questions of how machines would develop themselves outside of human influence, as humans tend to tailor a lot of our creations towards our convenience more than for just sheer efficiency.

It also allows for a lot of exploration as to what makes humans, human.  We tend to make a lot of machines in shapes or forms that are either similar in shape to things we know or see, like something bi- or quadrupedal, or very simple shapes, like boxes or cubes.  Does making something that looks human and can simulate human responses make us human, or is it something else?  A lot of these interesting questions are very fun to ponder and see people takes on these deep and ideological debates.

I hope you have fun writing your series, and look forward to the results.

Thank you Coryn for taking the time to read and comment on the second chapter.

1.  I do think these could be condensed into a single chapter.  I write a lot of these chapters from how I visualize the manga chapter would look.  It's why I tried to keep the stories more condensed, also due to the fact, I have not actually published one yet.  So I do not know how long or short I should make each chapter so they are not too short or too long.

2.  The moon beam is an actual beam.  The torches go out and an image of the moon appears on the ceiling where the actual moon is located, shining a beam of light down into the church.  I didn't go into too much detail, because I didn't want to break the pacing of the written story too much, and I wanted to let the reader interpret the beam as they chose.  Again, I write these based on the image that I have in mind, but I want to give the reader the liberty to visualize it as they choose.

3.  For this one, I should clarify, the man passed through one wall and hit the house's wall but did not pass though that one.  However, the man does pass through the church wall, and I agree with you in that the human body is not exceedingly dense or hard, but with enough speed and force anything can become a bullet, although not an effective bullet.  The force required to put a normal person through a wall would likely not only massively damage if not totally destroy their organs, but also break/shatter many bones due to the concentrated force of a single blow.  Also, the man needed to be sent outside, because the after math of the fire is the collapsing of the church, leaving the man as the only readily accessible corpse in the situation.  About three days after the incident, 3 investigators from different churches arrive to investigate the reports of a demon being in the town.  A paladin (holy warrior), a priest (holy mage), and an interrogator (holy thief).  The man's body is used for a "Life's Last Breath" spell which allows the 3 to ask the dead man about what happened on the day of his death.  Which leads them to chase the two who left Murkwood.  The true story of Murkwood is far more complicated than what the three investigators are lead to believe.

I hope this helps to clarify everything, and again thank you for taking the time to read through it.
