I'd like to chime in here and say a few things before this escalates.
The first thing is, Luna, you are being quite defensive about what Mahlua said.....
The second thing is, its very easy to use "style" as an argument for not trying to do something. I do think Mahlua might have come off as a little cynical with that response, but I feel like that's because she's been around the website for a while and there probably have been quite a few people who tend to act that way.
So the first thing I'll say about style is that it is a fickle thing. I actually don't agree with you that "anime" style doesn't have wrinkles or details. First, because "anime" style is a very broad way to describe a multitude of different styles. Like you said, there is stuff like Panty and Stocking that chooses to leave details out in favor of more simplistic shapes and forms. This is often done to smooth out the actual process of animation. When you do this in an illustration, because it isn't moving, you need a very strong and consistent sense of style already established. This is something very difficult to do because you NEED an outside eye to review your work. If the viewer feels that it is "stiff" as Mahlua did, it just means you did not adequately communicate your stylistic choice to the viewer, even if it makes sense to you. Now not all viewers will see things equally, so it helps to have multiple viewers and see how it works out for you.
As for how to fix this? You actually don't need to. Mahlua is just one viewer of your work, you can argue that it is a style you are trying to develop and maybe it's not quite there yet because we are all still learning after all right? I have a few recommendations for you to look at that might help you develop more.
Look up the artist Grace Liu/Nargyle.
As for your artwork itself, I think it's fantastic! I like your use of colors (something I am personally very weak at) and especially your sketches of your OC. For me personally, I would like to see some of your other work, especially unfinished ones. I want to try and help wherever I can!
You did just escalate it by making another argument against it, and I said "do not reply with an argument". So please respect this.
Your critique is appreciated though, thanks. Yes, styles vary, and I'd also like to point out that it would be weird to have all clothes with wrinkles though, esp. if you iron your clothes, so I based it on a realistic viewpoint as well. Some characters do not have wrinkles in their clothes at all, like Death the Kid that I draw often. However, if I did draw wrinkles and posted it here, then it would make sense to critique those wrinkles and say why it's wrong, and even redline it for me. But if you point out wrinkles that don't even need it, doesn't make sense to me. Sorry, that's just me. :/ BUT! I plan to definitely work on the coloring, but right now I am still working on drawing poses and hands, so it will have to wait. I am hoping I can color like Siraha on Pixiv or ortho-para on Tumblr in the future, but am sticking with anime cel shading right now. I like their 3d anime art.
Here's a wrinkle drawing(warning she's not wearing any pants)(it's just a sloppy sketch though and not fixed)
Grace Liu on Twitter? Just checked it and yeah they draw really good. I see her draw wrinkles on some of her characters too. You can check my art on Deviantart. Just look up xkirameku-lunaix and please do tell me if you see anything drawn wrong. I am still not very good with poses. XD
@BobbyJoeXForgotenSB I saw that anime actually, and am still working on the next season. :)
@shishi02 yeah pretty much, that's why I had to tell them it depends on the anime we are talking about, as anime styles vary. Someone else actually pointed the shading out too on another critique post I made actually, but yes, will definitely work on it! I was mainly color picking from actual photos that's why most of my colored art is like that.
@MahluaandMilk I am trying. Thanks.
