da-amn. all this improvement in only two weeks? you have some serious skills my friend

I'm still just copying. I can't call this skill when I haven't moved on from heavily using references when drawing. It's exhausting and mentally draining, though. As long as practice is exhausting, it's good IMO. It shouldn't be relaxing. It's sort of like working out, I think. Completely exhaust yourself and the next you'll have gained from it.

Drew these two in the morning at school
The one above is from Toriko, and the one below is from Ultimo.  The bottom one was only partially referenced this time as the panel only showed part of his face.

Pretty great studies you've got going here. Nicely done. I agree with the effort idea, but there should be some amount of fun when your doing it. Keep working at it. Using references is actually very adviseable when it comes to learning how to draw.

Although I'm putting in a lot of effort, I'm enjoying myself and having fun. I've never been so determined about something before. My passion for manga is bursting, haha :P. And I'm also the type of guy that enjoys falling to sleep due to exhaustion. Also, I'm moving on to copying full pages with panels, chat bubbles, and backgrounds included so I can get some experience doing those.

its great that your having fun drawing : ) i think too many people forget that nowadays. If you work a bit more on your facial and body proportions you'll see huge differences. i really like the last one and the tegami no bachi one (especially the shading) keep up the good work : D

Page of Bleach :P
Took me a few hours because I'm still an amateur at using my T-Square for making lines. But I'm happy with the result.

Something I drew in school today. The character design is from Tegami Bachi, but I decided to shade in his hair and try out some highlights.

Mecha!!  Very cool, I like how you're trying out different styles and drawing different types of people/things.  The more you practice drawing everything, the better you'll get as an artist.  Hope to see more!

Wow man, you're really getting good fast.  That drawing is awesome, way better than anything I can do.  You drew it at school?  Does that mean you did it from scratch?  That would be even more impressive.

Oh, and what kind of pencils and stuff do you use?  I bought some of the pencils that the pros use a while ago, but I really prefer to use a plain old mechanical one.  I hate sharpening!  >:(

Hah no I wish I did that from scratch, it's just a reproduction :P. I used a regular Ticonderoga #2 pencil and a .7mm #2 crap BiC mechanical pencil. I'm going to try and get a Pentel P205 .5mm mech pencil, if I remember correctly that's what it's called. I bring in a volume of shonen jump to work from at school, haha. Makes me look like a doofus when I draw from it but whatever heheh :P. It works for me because it gives me time to draw during a studyhall(45 minutes), during lunch(I skip and go to my friend's studyhall, another 45 minutes, or I wind up playing cards with him). I do just little non-referenced doodles sometimes though when nothing important in class is going on :P. For copying just try to focus on the relationships between the lines; that's what I can say. Although, I find that drawing manga upside down is pretty difficult mainly because you need really good perception of space and relationships between lines to do that. I did some upside down drawings today and the results were...okay...you need to really go slowly or you'll mess it up.

Yeah, my old driving instructor used to tell me that practice doesn't make perfect; only perfect practice makes perfect.  Sometimes when I'm not in my drawing mode I'll get careless and rush, never turns out well.

For me, starting is the hardest part.  I tend to procrastinate doing things I actually like for some reason.  I'll put off drawing all day sometimes for no reason, but when I finally start I get in the zone and it's pretty fun.  I don't know whats wrong with me.   ;D  I feel like I need someone to keep me accountable.

So, I guess you use the standard pencil for shading and the mechanical one for the rest?  I've been using a crappy .7 mechanical pencil too.  I have a 2B, 4B, and 2H, but I don't really know how to use them.

I copied down a scale of the pencil thicknesses before in my sketchbook. I'll tell you now, in order from darker to lighter: 9B 8B 7B 6B 5B 4B 3B 2B B HB F H 2H 3H 4H. I actually think i use my normal pencil for sketching and the mechanical for shading and darkening the final lines. And I should REALLY get back to using my 2H for doing the beginning sketching. Always sketch with H pencils, and then ink/do the final lines with B pencils, because they're darker. If you join the mangaraiders skype chat I'll gladly give you drawing assignments heheh *grins.* Just PM me your skype name and I'll add you in to the conversation group. And I understand your procrastination problems, but the root of mine is that I get caught up with doing homework, but I don't want to do homework, so I browse this forum, lol :P.

Nexuun what the hell did you do!? How did you get this great so fast?! Nice work! If you build up on this and study how the characters are drawn, you'll go places very fast. Nice!

Very nice work Nexuun. Great improvement as well. I would say the pose's are very spot on along with the anatomy. When you feel more comfortable with your drawings, tackle inking! I'd love to see some of your hard work flush out in bold lines!

This is probably one of the last things I inked, a month ago or something. It's really just a pain to set up my materials and clean all my stuff/nibs every time, so I haven't inked anything for a while(and it also takes a long time....:P. My pen technique was pretty low, at this point I had no idea how to draw lines correctly).

I should have spent much, much more time on some of these. These drawings had to be made in streaks for art survival, so my time was limited, and my discipline hasn't been too strong until recently. The second to last sketch is the start of a new road for me, so watch out for my improvement  ;). These were all drawn with minimum reference(really minimum, some weren't even drawn with any reference) to test my ability to draw from memory and imagination

All this is my opinion but im also a newb.
I really like the first one, second one, and 12th one. Some of the pictures have proportional problems such as hands in a couple sketches and the shield looks small to me (I play a lot of Skyrim lol). I extremely like the way you shaded the tail on the 12th picture. Overall really good sketches. Keep it up, I would want to be that good!

If you've seen any improvements in my drawings, it's because I've been drawing so much lately. Here it is, the pages of my 2nd sketchbook(completed) that I haven't shown yet. There are some pages I forgot to upload, but that isn't a big deal. It took a long time to upload them and paste the links here >__<

Holy *Cough*, Nexuun. You've been busy.

I don't quite understand all the exercises, but your hands seem to have gotten better. The perspective cubes were nifty to look at, and a lot of the poses you drew were cool. There's so much to look at it's hard to comment on it all, but nice work. Keeping busy.

Nexxun, you're amazing. The amount of effort you've put into this is absolutely incredible. So much improvement so quickly :D

Question: Do you draw in the thick black lines before or after?

I draw in thick black lines after. I do the initial lines with 2H thickness prismacolor pencils, and then I go over them again later with a 0.5mm HB mechanical pencil for clarity. I've found that my best drawings come when I set up the pose so I can make sure that the proportions, perspective, and general body shape is correct(all that's done in 2H thickness). It's later erased or replaced by the darker lines later.

Need more work on the lower body. I also suggest working on everything over to make them more fluid. The art seems to not have much movement. Maybe it might be because you draw the muscles always bulging. Try putting them in a more relaxed state? Not a lot of people have bulging muskles :3. Yes, muskels.

Ryan, do you know you can smudge/soften your shading by holding the pen lighter as you do ir, then smudging with you finger?

Giver  softer feel (for shading on ur body and face for example).

Yeesh. You're like Rock Lee from naruto. A genius of hard work. Keep it up. This is definately going some place. Man, what i'd do to be able to draw hands like that.

I can sear that you game me the finger up there^

I am telling you, that's not nice... XD

Anyway. I can see the purpose in practicing hands. Now, some of the outlines were not necessarily realistic. Was it a speed test as well or did you deliberately make them different? One example is on the top right on the second. I am just trying to understand the practice.

Please, keep us posted on ur trainings. I might use some of them.

<<<< Needs to draw better hands.

I found a new method for sketching that works much better for me. Some of these are from drawing on my bus(the ones that are really messy). Been pushing proportions big time on some of these.

(http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u446/Nexuun/img078Custom.jpg)Here's some gesture drawing. Near the end I found myself unsure what to add to the drawing when there was still 5 minutes left for the pose(for the 10 minute pose), because I've already made it almost impossible to change anything due to my mark making. I saw a centipede on the ceiling in my laundry room and that inspired me on the last one. Everything else are just sketches.

@FM: thanks for watching over my sketchbook. I'll keep working at it, don't worry  ;)

Just some sketches in my off-time. Messed up the last one, but ya know, can't get it right every time. My bus ride home is also a considerable amount of time...30 minutes. I've figured that I should draw in that time, so I have.

@Rojas: Thanks man, though my anatomy is terrible! I gotta do more observation
@Zeal: Thanks, gesture drawings are tough. I'm sure you'll be able to draw them soon, too.
@FM: It is not as much as it seems. A little bit everyday when I can, goes a long way.
@Han: Yes, that is something I've worked hard on to achieve. A few of the photos I used for the gesture drawings had this guy posing with a towel lol >.<

Here's quite a bit of things. Drew my father in the chair. All the other characters are from imagination, and one of them is really distorted, on purpose of course. Perspective studies, and proportions of man. I still need to finish the proportions of the woman, though. Practice with my inking pens and the characters I tried to ink came out horrible, so I definitely gotta do more practice with it.
@h_musick: thanks, they're for a character design for my gaming graphics class
@p4: drawing an object without looking at your paper, and only looking at the object. Requires synchronization of the eyes and the hand.
@lego: thanks, but my torso still needs a lot of work
@zedonius: thank you very much
@jamie: I agree with what you said, I still need to work on all the things you commented on.

Ryan amazing practices.

It seems to me that you know how to draw everything of the human anatomy already :o. Only thing is that you need to work on blending them together. Such as your hands, you do a good job when you only focus on them such as when they aren't attached to the body as so.

When you put it on a body it doesn't look as spectacular unfortunately.

I really want to see you succeed, so keep practicing. Somehow you need to blend the hands in better with your body.

i possibly concur with ryan.
a good strat to being able to do that would be when you practise draiwn ght ehands on their own, draw it further up the arm each time, then when you draw the arm no the character, you will have actually already started your hand a bit earlier.
that sometimes works for me.
i love your gesture poses or whatever they are called, theres a lot of energy in them.

I'll probably be posting regularly again. Last week's work.
Anyways, I finally have some still lifes. Got boxes, sketches, and creatures. The two full body drawings are WIP, I believe. Oh, and I did a study of some anime-style when I was bored.

looks like you had fun with the cubes :P
good proportions with the dude above the cubes page, the arms look well proportioned muscles.
i think you need to press a lot lighter when you sketch, especially around parts you cant draw well, because you are getting a lot of lines piling up. especially around the hands. you could try using like a 2b to finalise your lines if you dont want to press lighter.
hope that helps!

@suuper thanks. Well I've decided to start drawing my initial guidelines in 2h like I used to. I think I just have a heavy hand.
I got something you guys don't usually see around here, haha  ;) Quick sketch because I had an urge to draw really badly while I was doing my homework.

Right then! So, I checked a few of your figures and...

... I'm afraid you have a bit of Wonky Anatomy Syndrome.

Going off of Loomis's ideal figures and proportions in, "Figure Drawing For All Its Worth", I did a bit of analysis on your figures. Using both tools and rough finger positioning, I determined the height of each figure. All of these figures have an age of eight or nine years of age, or if we were to use more realistic proportioning (rather than the ideal), they would be around age ten. I doubt that this is what you're going for, but it is consistent within your drawings. Considering their muscular build and manly faces, this makes the figures seem "off".

According to their height, the positioning of everything seems quite decent (minus the pectoral regions not being consistent from figure to figure), but the legs merge right into the hips way too far upward. The crotch, as such, seems to extend too far downward.

Figures 3 and 4 also seem to have imbalances. For example, figure 3's right arm merges onto the torso too far towards his chest, making his right pectoral region seemingly disappear. Figure 4 does the same to a lesser extent. Foreshortening might be a good thing to work on to fix that issue, either that or a review of construction techniques.

So, the tl;dr version: Recheck your anatomy and fix foreshortening conflicts.

Good luck and keep going, Ryan!  ;)

@Zeal: Thanks, once again. Your comments helped very much.

Anyways finally, here's an update. It starts out with sketches for proportion and random sketches. Then it goes onto silhouettes because I felt it would be a good way to get better at designing and having proportion in my drawing. Then there's the collection of studies I've done in the mirror. And lastly more sketches.

@everyone: the drawings are back now

Drawings from this week. I really need to find a way to dedicate more time with drawing and still balance it with my school work.
Drawings on the bus and the cleanest one was drawn regularly(warrior with the helmet). Trying to actually design some characters now instead of drawing random naked dudes. Loomis studies at the end. I am going to try to do more studies now. Criticism/critique will be appreciated on anything.(I really don't like the 3rd one)

Post by: Ryan on January 28, 2013, 12:59:54 PM
Hiya! Update: life drawings of the nude female model!

It's my bad that I haven't updated a lot lately. The last three saturdays I've done life drawing of nude models for about 3 hours each sessions. It was an amazing experience and I learned so much, which will be impacting how I continue to learn. And now for the drawings. They're a mix of gesture drawings in charcoal. And 20 minute/30minute/1hour long poses done with pencil and charcoal for the atmosphere.

nice work! the ones where you have done the most shading are by far the most accurate. in some pictures the pencil outlines still show through after you have done the shading, perhaps if you wanted a bit more control over the shading try and draw them lighter, then when you shade over, they wont be visible and it will look better still!
Title: Re: Ryan's Sketchbook Dump (Includes nudity now...)
Post by: Ryan on January 28, 2013, 01:33:18 PM
mm, the ones with more shading were the longer 1 hour poses most likely. I haven't quite yet found an equilibrium with line and value in those drawings. My edge control still needs a lot of work(that's basically what you were describing, now you know the formal definition).

ahhh definitions is my weak point in virtually any field of knowledge which is a bit of a pain, i will try and remember (especially since you know them i can use them, some people might not know (but then it might help to tell them))
yeah its the same with my drawings, the longer time ones are also shaded more properly. its almost like i knew it was going to be good, and spent more time on it :P

@Jamie: Thanks for the critique. I'll try the glass again some time soon. I'll see if I can spend a few hours on something, and I will probably use some reference for it as well. The problem with the hands and feet is because I do not know how to relate the hands and feet to other parts of the body. I will work on this now because I finally realize my mistake.

New stuff. Came to a few realizations. I've been dicking around with all this observational drawing *censored* and I've completely missed the point of it. I "thought" I was analyzing the model, but in reality I was only just copying it. If I'm not making studies of what I am drawing, how can I call it "analyzing?" Isn't analyzing the same thing as making studies, but just said with different words? And then there's this problem I have with my sketches that I don't try to apply my studies. I really need to change all this.

I guess the reason I finally realized this is the drawing of the robot. I realized that I sucked so hard on it because I don't know *censored* about robots and I've never even considered the relationships of the forms that go into drawing robots. Improving at any stage of proficiency is the same: make the relationships better, learn how to draw the forms in perspective. Knowledge is key, no matter how well I can draw basic forms in perspective I will need to understand what I'm drawing in order to end with a good drawing. Applies to everything.

I haven't neglected hands, don't worry.

i agree with your comment on analysis, yes knowledge is power, and experience is really awesome when you build up a huge database in your head of objects and forms which you can draw at will. i am still trying to do the same.

nice drawings, although i think it would be nice if you put more detail into some of the figures, like more defined areas of shade rather than the sketchy style you use quite a bit.

yeah its hard to find a difference between copying and studying/referencing, given the result will probably be the same. i think the difference is how much you thought about what you were doing, and how the lines/proportions relate to one another, rather than just doing it mindlessly/automatically.

Those cubes seem to be a pretty interesting meathod to train drawing in perspective. I've heard that they're helpful when drawing a body for up-shot and bird-eye view for example [1 cube as a size of 1 head]. Can also be replaced with a huge cylinder divided to the heighs of the head.
You got so many sketches here O.O. Ever trying making any drawings of original characters or fanarts? I mean a drawing where a certain action takes place. I think it would look good with your sketching skills XD
Title: Re: Ryan's Sketchbook Dump (Includes nudity now...) MASSIVE UPDATE
Post by: Ryan on February 18, 2013, 06:16:47 PM
@P4: Thanks man. If I updated more then it might seem less overwhelming. This time you will see quick an evolution in terms of work.
@super: yes, I seem to be more at rest with that issue now in observational drawing now. I now keep the fundamentals in mind.
@Daisetsu: Cubes are a good training to do. Cubes can contain or build many different types of forms. Original characters, I don't know about that right now. My ability to draw characters is very disappointing right now.

So, this is a lot to go over. I started to read drawing the head and hands, for several reasons that don't matter much anymore. I transitioned when I realized reading Successful Drawing and getting good using that book would be my best bet. And then I transitioned to ball point to try and improve my lines. Now, I'm using a fine-liner to try to improve my lines. On Saturday I went to this figure drawing event, with a clothed figure that posed for us. Unfortunately, she was clothed, but what can you do.

i use ballpoint a lot, it can take a bit of getting used to (i tried to go back to pencil the other day and i was like what is this strange pen lol)

i cant really offer any advice, but as an idea for when drawing faces, not only try drawing a face at an angle, but a face looking left and right as well, so you have the shoulders for reference. i think you could cover a wider range of poses that way.

@lego: Thanks man. You make me seem like a detective, haha!
@super: Alright man, twisting the head to look is definitely one of my weak points I'll try to get to that as soon as possible.

Anyways I'll try to explain all this non-sense here. On Monday I started my rotation of Perspective, Human Anatomy, and drawing from life(full rotation takes 3 days. So every day is devoted to one subject). On the off-side in my gaming creation and gaming graphics class I have been given the role of lead character designer. So all the characters and demon concepts are for that. Critique is welcome on those. Throughout trying to design the demons, I've started to reference animal heads for the design and that seems to have improved them a tad bit. There's two messed up sketches in red pen, those were basically just to relieve stress and weren't entirely serious(I still made an effort though). Lastly, like 2 pages of drawing people from the library. I've gotten used to that haha.

Man. Over the parade of disembodied heads, I really get the impression that you've got a fair amount of dedication going on. The features of the face going on here, with the nose, eyes and lips being your strong points. My only suggestion wiuld be to watch your placement of these features on the head. It's obvious from your amazing skull sketches that you've got facial construction down. I can even see the guidlines being well layed-out on your finished heads. However, the eyes tend to be a bit high, and the noses seem a  bit long to me is all. Maybe that's a stylistic choice, but when I had those issues, it was from losing focus of where I was placing things on the face in favor of trying to fraw things in an anatomically correct way.

TL;DR: Great stuff, keep it up, watch the proportions.

I agree with nairbons on the dedication; you've got a lot of it driving you forward, and it bloody well shows.

Your heads and skulls are most certainly improving. Quite impressive, actually. Your perspective... practice? is fantastic as well. It looks incredibly clean and well done, even if they are basic shapes* and the occasional figure or two.

Keep it up, bud. You're doing great.

The demon sketches look like they're picking up! And your doing life drawing i see. I found a totally cool online pose site http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/

let's have a sketchup for 1min or 30 second poses. 10 pictures? No scanner though so i'll take photos...

@Zeal: Thanks again, for it all. It was, after all, you who gave me the final push to start up a more serious schedule again. Thank you Q_Q.
@lego: Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing about the demons as well. After rotting in my own design sense I realized I needed to start using existing designs from nature!

wow thats a lot of work!
i like the gesture drawings, they are full of energy!
if i may offer a bit of advice, on most of the pencil drawings, your figures tend to look really smudged. i dont know if thats your style of shading or just because you lean on your drawings like i do a lot, but i think they would look better if you had sharper outlines and shaded reigons that are shaded not smudged. hope i explained myself clearly :P

A general 'good stuff' as usual from me. I'm a bit bothered by the thickness of the pencil though, are you used to using it like that or...?  I love the gesture drawings the lines there are direct and to the point.

I think i'd like to see some winged demons for some reason. Good stuff ryan!!!

@suuper:
Hey, thanks for visiting my stuff again. The smudges are most likely due to my carelessness. And this batch of posts I focused more on my line work, so if you can see any difference, I would appreciate your feedback. Though, I'll be leaving value behind a little for now(they tend to hide my mistakes in other areas).

@lego: I use primarily wooden pencils for drawing now, and sometimes my pencils don't have a good edge to draw crisp lines. I will try to take better care of my pencils. And thanks for the compliment about the gesture drawings. Hopefully, my line economy in my gestures will continue to improve. And winged demons, haha? Maybe, my friend. We'll see.

Also, more critique and advice will be very much appreciated.

"[5/11/2013 9:46:48 PM] Ryan: i look forward to your post tomorrow morning, mike"

You clever, word-playing bastard...
But I respect good word-play.

I merely do not have time to cover all the things I want to cover (time crept up on me). But first, let me start out with... Great continuations. You're working hard as usual, and it brings me great pleasure to continue to see you working hard.

I wasn't able to comment on your last batch of drawings, but the value apples were fantastic, and your imagination with the demons, dragons, and deathly-ill dogs hasn't faded, which is good. With this recent batch, page eight's (5-2-13, top) hand was great. The thumb's clean lines are good, and the various contours of the hand and fingers were clearly defined. On that same hand, I would suggest rechecking the tip of the index finger, and perhaps straightening it out a bit. But, that's merely a suggestion on an already great drawing.

Keep up your anatomy studies. Page nine's (5-2-13, bottom) anatomy studies seemed pretty spot on, particularly the back and the upper neck. Keep in mind, however, that the muscles of the arm (and of everywhere else) are not "edgy" but rounded and organic. But, those are minor details...

On with my two red-linings, which are more like red-colored comments, ah?

Spoiler
(http://i1261.photobucket.com/albums/ii584/EnginerNope/redlineryan1-1_zps8882881c.jpg)

For the first "red-lining," I figured it was easier to comment on them with words on a drawing page rather than words on a forum post, if you know what I mean. For the second one, a decent amount of your figures are running into the same problem. Too wide-spread feet and awkwardly placed knees.

You have to keep in mind that the knee will often follow a straight line down the middle of the foot. If you are sitting, try this: Stick your leg out, be it your left or right. Plant your heel on the ground, and point your toes up to the ceiling as much as you can. In this position, rotate your foot to the left or the right using your heel as a pivot, as if a hand on a clock. Your knee will follow the middle of your foot regardless. Now hold your knee with your hands, and attempt the same exercise. You'll notice your foot has extremely little maneuvering room, perhaps a five to seven degree spread left or right, without the knee following suite.

Too wide-spread feet is also an issue. There are three positions from which humans hold themselves with their feet. The first is the feet are pointed straight forward, which some consider the "ideal." The second is "pigeon-toed," or the feet pointed inwards toward the center of the body. The third is a wide stance, in which the toes are pointed outward from the center of the body. The extreme "naturals" that people will hold themselves in for the last two are, going from the center of the body, 80 degrees outward and 35 degrees inward.

Now, a wide-spread position has a lot of leeway. There are natural positions that allow for a 90* spread with perfect comfort, and these often look a lot like "L" shapes, which can vary greatly. You'll find a lot of girls hold themselves in an "L" shape with their feet when standing still, particularly when discussing amongst themselves. Fighters often kick with a foot behind them, which will often be parallel to the kicking foot, usually at a 70-90* angle from the center of the body, depending on the range and type of kick.

Next time you find a gaggle of girls gobbing away amongst themselves, check out how some of them stand to see what I mean.

Keep in mind that, when they stand, they will often have a balancing leg, with the leg performing the outward angling bent and off-center.

If you're going to have your figures stand with a wide-spread, be sure to keep it under 80* for a natural stance, otherwise, their balance will have to shift to compensate for the load.

... Anyways, that was my anatomical two cents for the night. If you want me to take another look at 'em sometime and cover more topics, just hit me up on Skype. Gotta hit the sack in the mean time. Learning to sew tomorrow, and it's nearing 3 AM...  :glare:

Keep up the good work, bud.

@zeal i think i might start using that method of helping people improve, it seems much faster than writing out what i mean when i can just draw over and annotate their art directly.

iver been noticing quite a few people missing out hands, something i found useful is getting one pose right for hands like just waving or something, then if you dont want to do anything, you can just use a pose you are used to doing, it maketh the drawing more complete. then as you gain more experience you can create more variety from memory and imagination :P

@zeal: thank you for your helpful post, once again.

I still have some things from a week ago to upload, but I'll make a post with recent stuff.

Hot diggity dAyUm. The painted ones, are really good. Something about the sketches seem a bit off. I think it's the hands and heads. The heads on the sketches look kinda blocky, and only the bottom one looks like it has ears. The hands.... yeah. Hands. F*ck drawing hands. Hands are a c*nt.
Anyway~ Great work, and the improvement from your first posts to now, is crazy good.

Looking good, sketches are coming out nice. Be sure to use those anatomy lessons when you draw from just your memory. The blue drawing is a bit stiff and looks like you mostly focused on the head and the body was left with less detail.

Woah, that art dump looks amazing! I guess if I sat down and drew studies like that I'd get some progress, but I'm kind of lazy. I applaud your dedication.
The shading is pretty intense except in those few color ones where it seems a little flat. Maybe that's the point? I don't know.

i did mean hard working, but i think i missed it when you were less active, since i was also less active. so my point of view was skewed :P

but your drawings now show a lot more confidence than before i think. the use of shading is done quite well, obviously with sketches its hard to see details but i think you've got the basic value down quite well. i remember for ages back you were practicing getting the values for colours right.

how long does it take to do each sketch? i think it would be nice to see more detailed ones :P

Digital Sketches. Semi-realistic drawing style as I see it.

digital is always fun because im lazy. These are from one session tonight of sketching. Just drawing whatever comes to mind, no judging (the ideas) and just going with the flow. Some I spent more time on, you should be able to tell there.

Instead of hording everything I do, I'm going to start posting (hopefully consistently) some stuff. It's usually me looking around at others' pictures here on the forum. Since I've been a little bit more active recently I met as well post what I'm up to, so the circle of communication/viewing can finally occur.

As to what I'm doing, I'm not currently pursuing my interest in manga because I've joined up with a small game development group. We're all in over our heads; but, currently, making work for that, and any efforts of improvement need to be made with it in mind > .>.

With that said, enjoy some of the silly stuff I did tonight. There's some character silhouettes there as I continue to struggle with designing characters.

Man, I love seeing your work around. It may make Nair feel alive, but it motivates me to keep doing my own versions of sketches on a more frequent basis. Sadly, I'm starting to find very little time between work and school. Maybe I can take one of my sketchbooks around and start doing gesture drawings of people while in transit places, but that would make me feel a little creepy.

@Nairbons: I know what you mean. I've always liked looking at people's sketchdumps. I hope to get much better very fast, haha. Watch out

@MahluaandMilk: Thanks! Sketches are really good to do. There's a lot to think about in terms of character design for expressing what you want to. Gesture drawings of people in transit is pretty good, or a cafe. Drawing your friends and family is always an option, I did that for some of the life studies.

@legomaestro: Yes! Well, for now I'm revving up to get ready. I'm not really sure what kind of story, but it'll be a serious story I think. Fantasy, maybe, but it could be realistic as well. I'll try to post more, but that means less time to draw, haha.

I see you, back of the head angles. Ugh, those give me so much hell. Good on you for being able to pull those off so well. I've also noticed in a lot of your original works that the head size is much larger than the body. Not sure why I am just seeing this.

Awesome stuff Ryan. Love how you know all the right planes to shade and the like, and there's a nice 3d element to all of them.

Jeez louise that's a sketch dump and a half. You've been busy.

Like the expressions a lot too.

Your anatomy and shading is neat. I think you're still struggling with faces though. Make sure when you're drawing hair, to use quick strokes & that the hair is following the form. When rendering the hair, treat it more like ribbons, your highlights are a bit funky.

I also think it will be worthwhile to re-study the jaw & lips area. You're pushing them out too far sometimes imo.

Nice to see your work again

Wew. I'm cringing at my old drawings. Anyways, I'm back at it again. A bit rusty as I haven't drawn in a couple days. I want to learn to draw cute things so that's my new focus starting from this post. I hope to document my progress and practice from here on. 1hr 40min, no references used this time.

There's something emerging in these newer ones, especially the chibis, that vaguely reminds me of another artist, but I'm not sure I can place it. Soul Eater's manga, maybe?

Regardless, it's nice to see you at work again. I've missed your feedback and presence around here. I hope to be seeing more of your stuff and advice soon.

@Ryan for just short of 2 hours thats some great dynamic sketches there. aha Cute and Chibi, huh. love it. my advice would be to keep the details simpler than a normal drawing. chibi hands especially tend to be blob hands, and only gain digits when needed for pointing and so on. that being said, I like the way you've going with the large hands, it reminds me of something but I can't place it. keep it up, and experimentation is key for exploring new styles. you don't want to end up drawing generic stuff like everyone else so push those boundaries!

great to see your art here again, yeah old drawings can make us cringe, but hey the harder we cringe the more we've improved right.
and if you get rusty for not drawing in a couple of days, I don't even want to know what I get after a couple of months of not drawing!

Nice to see your work again Ryan! Brings a warmth to my cold dead heart to watch artists who haven't posted art in a long time post their art again.

I do like the Chibis too! They're very expressive!

Dude long time no see. Like it's been ages man. Also those chibis are über expressive. This is really great stuff man! Love how your shading works. You should do more.

Also a cringe at old art is a win for your new art. You've gotten better then.

Please, keep at it man!

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

For awhile, I wanted to be an illustrator for a living. I also went to university for art. I graduated last year in May.

The stress of trying to appeal to more a general audience, and the need to make more commercially appealing art got to me. I also needed to get a job and start making money, pressures from the family. That plays a big part.

I'm fortunate to not be in debt, and I have an internship now in another field I like, which is also less competitive.

I'm now treating myself as a hobbyist. I can do the weird, experimental things I've wanted to do for awhile now that probably won't lead to getting freelance work. I can just improve my skills, learn whatever new subject matter I want without needing to work on a portfolio.

I'll try to stick around longer this time.

Here's some semi-recent stuff, done just for the sake of drawing.

nice stuff. Yeah having a job certainly slowed down my art progress just for lack of time, but having stable income can certainly reduce stress while you pursue the art skill you want. well done for graduating at uni.
that last piece is super expressive, I can imagine a whole manga in that style. amazing what well placed scribbly lines can do.
looking forward to having you around.

Thanks man, I'm glad to be around too.. The key is to create variety in tone with the scribbles and to make sure there's still a lot of white space overall. It can be good to pick a side of a form, and say it's the shadow side—and put the majority of the scribbly lines there.

I've been looking at kimetsu no yaiba a lot. The author uses scribbly lines to fill in the eyes. I love it. Anyways, I'll show more of what I'm doing with that in a different thread.

I thought it would be fun to put the sketch layer right next to the drawings I make on top. I'll be indicating this with an arrow.

whoops missed your reply. I haven't done much cross hatching or line shading for ages so I@ll be sure to try out different approaches when I get round to it next.

nice improvement on the top one. I'm still trying to work out a good detail balance for a first/second/third sketch, and when in the iterations and resolving the sketch do I add each set of details. it's fun stuff.

Been putting off updating this for a while. I made a collection of the stuff I did during the second half of 2019. Was kind of a difficult year. Hoping for a better one this time.

I realized that I don't really have any desire to tell stories with my art, or even really to write fiction. It's a notion that I've had for a while, that is, doing these things. But, I think it came more out of adoration and enjoyment in consuming media.

For as long as I can remember, I have had a lifeless imagination. There are no characters interacting there. No great yarn that I must spin. Aphantasia makes it like this. To me, the idea of spending countless hours on story seems like a gruesome, frustrating hell. I wonder why it took me so long to realize.

Indeed, it's the case that I feel much like a fake whenever I try to tell or make stories. The characters seem to fall lifelessly on the page. Perhaps I will put effort in telling stories again one day for the sake of sucking at it. But it's no longer a real artistic goal for me. I wonder, what the fascination is in something I have never done for fun. I suppose the naivete was expecting something I didn't enjoy doing to some day become enjoyable. I have caused much pain to myself, procrastinating on the notion of stories, as a person that at the core isn't interested in telling stories.

What now, then? I am considering to create manga-inspired artwork and to sell it. Originals and prints. I wonder if people will be interested in my inhuman tastes in art. You see, at the core I cannot shake off the feeling of meaningless I have for art. I'm convinced I don't experience art like the common person might. However, I feel that this reflects the nature of our absurd and beautiful world. Yes, in a way I feel that turning the absurd into something beautiful is something that may come naturally to me.

Anyways, I still don't know what this art will look like, as I've only gotten started.

But, here's some stuff that I did before, messing around with using spaced repetition for doing studies. I'll talk about it more if I do more. I started out with the idea of doing 5-minute ones, but realized that is not enough time and moved up to 10 minutes.

Anyways, for a disclaimer, you should click on the images below to open them in a new tab.

I also decided to do 5-minute sketches as a practice. My goal was to get to 500 sketches. It's not really something I'm aiming to complete, but we'll see.

Hrm, that seems to be quite the headspace you've got yourself in there Ryan. I can certainly sympathize with a lack of willingness to create stories, although I can't really understand what you mean by the "inhuman" part of it. I suppose not getting a ride out of art is fine as long as you don't have a total lack of emotion for all things to go alongside it. But I would hope that you take some enjoyment out of it somehow, even if it's different from how you perceive most people to.
Title: Re: NSFW Ryan's Revived Sketchbook
Post by: Ryan on January 27, 2020, 02:19:09 AM
Well, I should be clear. When I say "art", I am really only referring to visual art that stands alone; e.g. stuff you may come across browsing online art galleries. The way I experience mixed mediums; comics, animation, television, etc. is for the most part normal.

Anyways, inhuman is maybe the wrong word. What does it mean for something to be "human" is largely undefined in the first place. What I mean is that I don't have taste that could be considered typical.

Take for example Samura Hiroaki's "love of the brute" art collection. I imagine the average person would find such artwork questionable. But, I find it to be valuable art and have no problems with it. It's not PG-13 work, so you'll have to google it if you want to see what I mean.

I think I like art that is well-drawn (visually appealing) and has some sort of implied story to it. Story serves to give the viewer a reason to explore the image, but I don't think the specifics of the story matter much to me. Story is really just the fact that something is happening in the image, or something already happened.

Subject matter is also not usually important to me. The first two qualities are what usually matter. I think this is unusual.

When it comes to art, the feeling of meaningless comes from the fact that I am very open to the subject matter. If the subject matter could be anything for me, then where does art possess "meaning"? What should the subject matter of my painting be? As a result, I came to the conclusion of making art where the subject matter of the piece holds no greater meaning, and is perhaps even absurd or undefined.

Well, my thoughts are still confused, and this current viewpoint will probably change over time.. But I know from a research study that every viewer brings their own history, personality, and values when it comes to valuing artwork. How many people will come to the same conclusion that I have?

How many people will get behind this notion of subject matter not mattering? I suppose, this is what I wonder. But I know that I will be bothered if the extent of my motivation in making art is to simply make visually appealing artwork. That's why I have a feeling that I should explore this idea of subject matter not mattering.

Honestly it sounds like you're dancing on the edge of some new school of art man, or at the very least least the edge of one I've never heard of before (are we beyond post-post modernism yet? I have no idea). I think your thoughts have a place, and I am definitely starting to get more of what you're trying to say. I don't have the vocabulary to say it either, but I think the concept of stories mattering but not the subject matter is a line worth exploring.

Mmmmm...I was watching some videos on Eric Andre. His comedy could be described as absurdist. I think there are some connections there with what I want to do.

I've been a bit busy with other stuff lately so I haven't drawn for a couple days. I'm happy with how these drawings turned out though. I'm trying to put as much focus on the silhouette as possible, and putting details off until the end. I guess I'm trying to build drawings that are solid and appealing even when there's not much going on.

I think I've had the tendency in the past to fill up my drawings with as much nuanced linework, "skillful" anatomy, and detail as possible. Perhaps it was to try to make the drawing look "cooler" when I didn't think they were cool enough.

I have also put too much emphasis in the past on drawing in an automatic way, heavily relying on muscle memory to draw things. So, I would have trouble when I would try to draw things with a different procedure or out-of-order. Perhaps my perceptions and knowledge has simply improved enough, but I'm able to build from basic shapes/forms into the complex shapes/forms much more easily now.

I'm starting to understand that the "cool" feeling to a drawing can be felt from a very simple, uncomplicated drawing.

This animator and his videos is who I have to thank for realizing the importance of silhouette.

good stuff Ryan
that copy is spot on! I've done a few serious copies but to get a perfect copy is jolly hard :D
and then to superimpose the original to see how much you mucked up is very painful!
