You were getting the idea down nicely and used strong lines which is good but they need refining. You should probably just try to use references as much as possible.

Also, try to thin out the pencil lines a little more. Especially for the girl they get in the way of the drawing.

Nice, keep drawing!

Your anatomy is really coming on and I appreciate the detail you're putting into your work. The girl though could be a bit wider and I think you ruined the guy's palm, looks as if he had a tumb growing out of the bottom of it and although it's good you've done good with clothes folds, I think you need to study them a bit more.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys I didn't use reference. Faces look interesting, and it's nice that you're trying to draw the whole body. Hands and clothing need a little work but it's an improvement.

Oh yeh, Korean webtoons like Noblesse or God of Highschool have a fancy way of drawing trousers and the like. Check them out when you have time.

Which characters are these? Second dude makes me think of DBZ for some reason.

Wow that's an improvement! The face and neck look well and the overall look isn't too bad. The wrinkles are still a bit too wrinkly though

Title: Re: boss art
Post by: legomaestro on August 29, 2014, 04:13:40 AM
The first one looks better because the size and shape is nicely filled out, and the curves work better on her form. I think you should work with better guidelines, and you may be better off only using a pencil.

If you must ink then use a ballpoint pen, because the kind of pen you're using is hard to show variation of line strength with.

Check out Austa's thread for ideas on working with pen and ink. Also her sketching is sort of fun to try out http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,8232.240.html

DBNext put up a useful tutorial on building up a character here http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,8376.msg196721.html#msg196721

Other than that search Deviantart for this sort of thing. Keep drawing.

Is this eyepatch girl your own original character?

Post by: legomaestro on August 31, 2014, 04:54:51 PM
This one turned out much better. The right leg and rand hand are problematic, but it's a nice angle you tried to draw. Maybe her face should've also been 3/4 rather than fully facing the camera. Lines look better
Title: Re: boss art
Post by: bossx5 on August 31, 2014, 06:01:21 PM
Thanks I figured it out after inking hands and legs are hard for me but I'm keep practicing to get better here's a quick drawing I did (http://th06.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/f/2014/243/a/1/140831_0003_by_leshaud6-d7xg2tm.jpg)
Title: Re: boss art

When drawing liknesses be careful. Naruto is easy to see who he is because of the forehead protector whiskers on his face and jutsu hand seal, but his hair is too spiky.

Whenever you can try to do quick google image searches to fix small issues like this

e.g i just did one now

Now it's not that you should copy directly, but you should try aiming to get some key features in check. The leaf symbol should be on the centre. His kunai satchel as it at the hip and his hair is actually shorter and doesn't spike out like that.

Also see that the zipper didn't need any zig zag lines to define it. You just needed two lines all the way up to the neck.

Also, count how many heads tall he is to get the proportioning right.

Luffy needed more work too methinks.

http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140115052048/vsbattles/images/6/6e/Luffy_Post_Time_Skip.png

His eyes should be more circular, and so is his nose. His neck should be thicker too. His legs are drawn too long so they look somewhat like trousers instead of shorts.

Some more stuff to look at

http://shattered-earth.deviantart.com/art/The-BASICS-Using-References-255875213

http://senshistock.deviantart.com/art/Learning-to-See-A-Tutorial-196300314

loads and loads of references

http://comicreference.deviantart.com/

http://senshistock.deviantart.com/

Also, don't underestimate the power of a good stick figure...

Keep drawing

A few comments of mine,

- I'm personally not too picky on anatomy, it depends who you're trying to draw. If you're trying to draw Songoku from DBZ, yeah you're gonna be drawing muscles. If you're drawing a girl with a smooth body, keep it simple.
- I would say, watch those body proportions. Last drawing, head too big, body very thin. The other one before that was better.
- Naruto, if you're drawing a character that already exist, help yourself with Google Image. The Naruto you have drawn is not wearing what he is usually wearing and the face does not look like the Naruto I know. Im sure you can do better.

Otherwise, I really like the coloring job that you did. Keep drawing, keep practicing.

Also when colouring in hair, draw them in the direction of the hair flow.

Not sure how helpful those are, but the very basic thing you should keep in mind is that you draw the figure from a stick figure frame work. Hip size limb placement all depends on that very first build up of the figure. then you add things later.

your characters are shaping up a little so keep going

awww cute I really love the face!  a bit of advice for ya. even with  chibi like character there are still proportion. depending on styles and with your's it would a child proportions. arms can reach the ears. like the right hand reaching the left ear. not meaning the arms in this just a exsample. if the legs were slightly bigger longer or maybe its the wasit should be longer. still super cute. i would want him a plushy!

I think the hair antenna is too large, and the shirt maybe a bit too tight (I wouldn't wear it, looks like exposed muscle tissue)... I think you were just too lazy to get the hair right, and decided to make the antenna hugemongus (Huge-mawng-gus). Hair also seems to be really very fluffy doesn't curve enough or seem to start from a certain spot. No style value in my opinion; just a mass of hair thrown on his head.

Your arms are also two different lengths. One shoulder is bigger than the other. Legs too long, characters still have no indication of hips.

You also put a lot of muscular definition in each design, seems to be a trend - suggest using less definition unless flexing all sexy-like.

Post by: bossx5 on October 25, 2014, 11:32:08 AM
Well I'm still learning hair and the arms are two different lengths because one is resting on a sword the shirt is like one of those under armor like shirts. Ill get better. Slowly easing back to conor

May my faith be with you.

One of the things I forgot... you should totally try drawing smaller and more harder eyes for the dudes. Reason is because people might mistake him for a girl in face only panels. Even though he is obviously a badass with a sword.

-cries as I see the hair and depth, as well as awkwardly twisted body-

You just erase it and redraw it, with lines that aren't drawn really hard then draw over your lines with either a pen or permanent sharpie.

in your latest rework the arms are very disproportionate, as are the head and hair.
i would suggest working on the art not looking flat, as well. i see you're trying for the 3-d look of her with her body turned and staring at the observer, but it comes off like she's stuck to the paper.

I use pretty simple guidelines for the body - Just 7 or 8 lines, evenly spaced.
I found this picture quite helpful:

If you need help on hands go here

http://www.posemaniacs.com/tools/handviewer/

and theres a list on the right you can click to view different hands, you can also click the mirror image button to flip it so you can draw L and R hands.
You can rotate the hands and zoom in and out too, so you can get a feel of what your hands should look like.

If you want to improve on your anatomy..i can help,i guess..

here's an advice, you can take it or leave it..

with just a week, dont do artwork..

just practice sketching different kinds of shapes you can think, without using any ruler or measuring tools (just use pencil and paper)from smallest to biggest..

and different lines from shortest to longest..

practice it over and over again..

endure it as much as you can for about week..

then after a week, try to illustrate any random characters,(it doesnt matter how thick or thin your lines ,just illustrate something)

and then try to compare it ..youll see the difference how you do a character about a week ago...

*looks at first page... keeps going... more....*
You seriously improved your art a ton good job
Something I noticed though is that you drew the leg muscles wrong (like on the thighs)

Here is an example of how it should look when they are a bit define (be warned, this might scare you but not as much as when you google images "quadzilla muscle" which are insanely strong legs...) http://www.fitnesssutra.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/124.jpg (http://www.fitnesssutra.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/124.jpg)

If you don't want to click the link then I shall describe it to the best of my ability...  Basically on a front view you could see 3 major muscles bulging out of the leg (if you work out or eat extremely healthy).  The first one bulges out of the inner side of your leg right above the kneecap (like next to the side of it).  The second one bulges out on the outside of the leg and is a little bit higher/raised than the first one.  Now the third one is in the middle and raised alot higher than the other 2 (almost in the middle of the thigh between the hip and knee cap).

The reason I don't take a picture of my leg and post it here is because my 3rd muscle is not really define (and also because it is alot of work to get a picture onto this site and I don't think you guys wanna see my legs that badly)

Anyways keep up the good work (still shocked at the 6 month jump with mostly occurred in like a couple months, mostly talking about the body proportions)

Title: Re: boss art
Post by: Dr.Striker on January 20, 2015, 07:09:02 PM
I have to use mouse as well.. I have no choice. And I understand how difficult it can be to do... well to do anything at all with it.

Plus, my mouse is damaged and clicks itself twice often. Meaning that if I'm dragging a line slowly and gently in photoshop, it's probable that the mouse will click itself at some point and ruin everything. Which means I have to repeat the line over and over again... imagine what it is like to draw the line art! Especially drawing long curves.

So yeah, that picture surely is not as easy to make as it seems.

Still, I'd suggest:

A) Erase the background.   Since you are coloring digitally, you can use any program to get rid of the paper behind the image, so you have a neat white background, otherwise  we can see the graphite of the pencil and the eraser spread over the paper and it doesn't look good nor clean.

B) Draw the outlines too. It's inked but you may want to fine tune the lineart with some kind of program... To do this with a mouse I suggest a program like Paint Tool Sai that allows you modify every line to make it seem like it was done by the stroke of a pen. Likewise you could use photoshop and create a path layer over the outlines, then fill it with a black color, there's a setting to "simulate pen pressure" so it looks as if it was made by your own hand in a tablet. (Each of these require patience and effort)

Overall, it's quite an improvement from previous ones. The way the eyes are colored is pretty good. What program are you using?

Hello,

The girl is really cute but I think her breasts lakes symmetry, and there is a bit of issue with anatomy...the face of the guy in the left also need some more symmetry, his eyes are different...furthermore, though they are really nice, the curving of the clothes looks rather random especially the pants of the guys ... I would advice to roughly draw your character naked and make the clothes more or less follow the curves of the body, but of course it depends on how loose the clothing.

Hope this help good day.

Yes, I think Nomena is right.

The features are dissimilar.

You could also try to make the torso a bit wider, these look rather skinny.

You could consider giving a little more hip to this girl...also she looks muscular? unless that is your style of course, I would suggest to reduce her arm muscle :-)

Also, unless this is your style  ;) ...to my knowledge:

For girls, the width of the shoulder is smaller than the hip and is between 1 head width and 2 head width depending on how old the girl is (I don't know if I can post this link http://animeworld.com/howtodraw/bodies1.html)

For the men,  the hip width is smaller than the shoulder width (the opposite of the girl) the width of the shoulder between 2 and 3 head width unless it is a freak...

Nice stuff boss, you're slowly improving. Just try to make the people less thin. Keep on referencing manga and trying to have fun and try not to stay too much in your comfort zone. Draw difficult things when you can.

Keep it up

The fighter looks pretty serious. Interesting poses you're trying to tackle, you should use reference images to make them look better. Do you read any martial arts manga? They could help with the drawing.

Good stuff, keep on drawing

I don't have a manga facial or poses but I like using realistic stuff to get inspired so maybe you can as well

http://www.posemaniacs.com
http://artists.pixelovely.com/practice-tools/face-expression-practice/

In the second web page you can find, feet and hand gesture and other under "Practice tool"

Sometimes I don't even draw them, just spend some time looking at as many poses and pictures as I can and try memorising them.

Title: Re: boss art
Post by: MK on July 22, 2015, 12:36:34 PM
If you are having trouble coloring then you should look up shading techniques.  Instead of just shading in a random direction you can do the small circles getting a more even shading. There is also shading in the direction of the drawing meaning the angle changes based on lines around it
Title: Re: boss art
Post by: MK on July 22, 2015, 12:44:51 PM
Another thing is think of where you light source is, it can not only create highlights in hair/eyes but also in smooth/hard material.  Also based on the light it creates shadows for the rest of the body

Title: Re: boss art
Post by: MK on July 22, 2015, 10:55:51 PM
I used the computer to draw my profile pic.  Turns out the skin color is an EXTREMELY LIGHT orange color (or brown if you are coloring a darker person).  I don't use colored pencils but I imagine that you have to barely color the paper.  I would definitely try on normal paper first before coloring your drawings.  Another idea is just to get a skin colored pencil, pretty sure they have those

Try https://www.colorcodehex.com/html-color-picker.html (https://www.colorcodehex.com/html-color-picker.html) if you don't believe me with a light orange

Hey boss did you know you can have ms4 brushes on ms5 ? I actually loved ms4 pro vs beginning interface though it was more intuitive. Something they shouldnt have removed in ms5 if you want my opinion but HEY! Great stuff go on i love your characters design they are too cute! Hope you draw more soon i love to Sée people's art.

Looking good there. Nice expression and outfit. Is Frank an original character? What's his backstory?

Also weird to ask but isn't it easier to send the digital picture directly through the net or is your net only on your phone?

Good to see you drawing again man. Keep at it!

Like the dude with the hat and the gal with the pigtails! Cool looking hair in general.

Nice work on the dude's musculature too. I see you're working on dynamic poses there.

What's the text next to the gun? Drives me crazy that I can't quite make it out. (Cool gun too btw)

Keep at it boss!

Post by: bossx5 on June 18, 2018, 05:24:43 PM
Thanks I wanna be able to draw guns but I suck at it lol. Yea I do the same poses alot so now I'm going full gear in learning. The guy in the hat is my gunslinger it started as a redraw but things change I can't get use to sai for some reason it does small things like when I start it there are no tools and I can't find the pen.
Title: Re: boss art
Post by: legomaestro on June 18, 2018, 05:28:28 PM
Haha mechanical stuff  like guns are always tricky. I think you're supposed to break it down into a cylinder attached to a cube with a stretched cube under the body. Not sure.

Hmm that's strange. Sai is usually pretty friendly to use. Have you tried Krita before? I heard that's useful.

Godspeed on the learning

I'm currently working on anatomy.
As an artist you're going to be saying that for the rest of your life :P

I love the render you've done on both eyes, but the top one is really cool like cat eyes. I tried to draw a cap the other day and realised how difficult it was, so well done on drawing it at all (I gave up). Maybe the angles a little wrong but since I failed I cant tell you how to do it better :P

On the top one though, it looks like you ran out of space? if you used digital, maybe drawing with a larger canvas, or zooming in more might help. You can always trim any unused space afterward. Unless its a traditional drawing in which case, oh well :P

Since you're working on line art, try and use stronger longer lines so it doesn't give that sketchy feel.

I'ts nice when the signature is sort of hidden in a work, it keeps the work looking clean but you still have your name on it somewhere. The background artist I recently posted links to actually does this with putting his website address in his artworks, and it's amazing how well and beautifully it fits into the scene.

haha I too have a spare cheap tablet for backup. good job I never have had to use it properly because it's super cheap haha

great coloured pieces and I love the eyes and hair on both.

Yea i sometimes take the art from stories for granted not saying i dont recognize good art. So for those like me it is a reward in movies, games, comics any art form to find the out of place piece in it or reference. I have to patient and learn to make more controlled long strokes.

Thanks im sketching alot now im mostly trying to figure out motion so they dont look so stiff and to do that i have to work on speed drawing. And does anyone else find that their fanart is better than originals, because i do and i have a theroy that its because their is something to compare with and i think thats whats getting me. Not that its bad to do fan art but for me its like if it doesnt look like a certain style say bleach or naruto or the likes i get a little discouraged thats why my works arint finished, but thats going to change so be prepared for alot more maybe a one shot i keep saying but i get scared not realizing i can always go back (that was my mentality drawing traditional).

Cool redraws! The third one is my favourite.
The standing stances do have a relaxed feel to them imo

Speed drawing is something I need to work on as well. I gotta stop being so much of a perfectionist...

First redraw looks epic. Love that energy blast. Really like your poses and it's nice how you never shy away from hands - They're getting better image for image.

I forget to ask what manga do you read again boss?

I like the look of your sketches. You've got the feel of the body down.

The character in your coloured drawing sure looks like he has a bold personality! Nice soft shading on the clothes. I'm still figuring out colours myself, so take my suggestions as you wish. Since he's in the air, a way you could emphasize that is to make the background lighter and more faded, so that it looks like he's further away from the ground, if that makes sense.

Keep up the good work! ^^

lovely sketches since the last time I visited!
I like your hatching colouring and shading style.
If you want sharper boundaries when colouring, may I suggest using a very thin pencil tool to trace the boundaries, and then use a fill bucket to fill in the shape? then you have full control over where the lines end, rather than using a thicker brush and "manually" colouring it in, so to speak.
love the pose and outfit on that last one.

Very nice! It's kinda fun how you can't quite say if she's holding her breath or choking something down. It's definitely a strong expression either way! Great job!
