Free Hand Hatching?

Does anyone know this technique of hatching Kubo uses? (Like on Byakuya's neck) Manga for dummies only talks about one of them, and I keep on failing how kubo pulls this one off.

Also interested in other forms of hatching, but this one gets my interest the most.

It looks like he draws an outline of where he wants the hatched shadow to begn and end. but she also adds a little bit of solid shadow inside the hatched one.
