GIMP recommend settings for drawing manga?
« on: August 18, 2013, 10:12:26 AM »
Anyone know how to make changes for GIMP settings so it would be able to use to draw manga like another program such as Photoshop, Manga Studio, Paint Tool or else?

thanks for the answers.

It was my understanding that you can use gimp to draw just the same as all those other programs. It may not have all of the same functionality, but I've seen many a piece of beautiful artwork done using the program.

But sadly I can't say I know the exact settings you want. I assume you're trying to hook a tablet up to it? I suppose there are some settings in there for that, but I"m afraid I'm mostly familiar with the simpler functions.

I suggest just playing around with it for a while, I'm sure you'll come across what you're looking for.

Will review stories upon request. My latest arc: http://goo.gl/KYgsfF

there isnt a manga function if thats what you mean, you can just use gimp straight after installing it to make manga without any change in settings, at least i havnt changed anything.
you have to use the basic drawing tools to get the result that you want
for example, if you have already got a scanned page that you need cleaning up, you can play with the image to change the contrast, colour etc
you can trace over the lines using your tablet, or using a path tool
you can fill shapes with gradients or a solid colour, and use layers as filters to adjust the colours and image to get certain effects
hope that helps, if not, try asking the question a different way or explain it again :P

to draw directly in gimp, just use the pencil or paintbrush tool
they are basically the same idea as the ones in MSpaint

yes you can draw smooth lines
when you have the paintbrush selected, you will see an option under the size and opacity called smooth stroke. tick the box and some controls will appear. by mucking about with those you will get the desired stroke.
hope that helps!
