Suggestions and Tips for Writing A Detective/Mystery Manga
« on: August 17, 2013, 06:45:54 PM »
Salutations fellow Raiders!  :santa:

I'm attempting to write (And draw) a detective manga, but the thing is I haven't treaded in this area before.  :(
It would be greatly appreciate if  someone who is in any way educated in this field would offer some tips and advice on going about this sort of genre :santa: Such as  plot structuring and effective pacing.

Thank you!
Regards, Pen-san

Read up on Sherlock Holmes.
Can't go wrong with a classic.
Also, the most important part of a mystery is how you structure it, so look into ways to show thinly veiled clues and be subtle about them.

^What he said. A good mystery isn't predictable, but, in hindsight, seems like it should have been.

http://divinesecretsofthewritingsisterhood.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/ten-tips-for-building-suspense-in-novel.html

That link up there ^^^ Gives ten good tips on how to keep readers in suspense, something vital to the detective genre!

Other than that, I would suggest opening it up with a Character Establishing Moment. Detective Conan has Teen Genius Shinichi solving a case and cannot resist the challenge. He meets up with his childhood friend Ran, who after he casually insults her father, punches a metal pole while cheerfully smiling.

^^^That alone gives you a lot of info on the characters!  :D

Similarly to what the others said: Foreshadowing is everything. Like paipis said, if you know what your looking for, it should be obvious the whole time. But if you don't, should be completely impossible to guess.

In addition to the stories you've already been told to digest, make sure to check out some more modern detective works as well. Here are some movies you might want to look into.

The Maltese Falcon
China Town
Assassination of a High School President

Lastly, tvtropes is a great research tool. It will help you learn the genre inside and out without slogging through a millions novels and movies.

Will review stories upon request. My latest arc: http://goo.gl/KYgsfF
