independently? no, but he's worked with several manga artist and he has experience as an assistant to some.

you're not missing out on much....in fact, anyone who thinks its such a great feat to see Mark Crilley's videos clearly needs to get their eyes checked. there are better, more recognized artists that share how they make manga.

Mark Crilley really focuses on the basics, then goes a little more in depth on the books he sells...but he is teaching absolutely NOTHING new.

Loren<3<Mark Crilly OTP jk lol

The fact that he teaches basics is why his videos are decent for beginning mangaka or people new to the style. He's just very basic. However, I believe it leaves plenty of room for people to develop their own style. Then again, looking at any speed paint video will do, I believe. Speed paints forever.

the point is, Mark Crilley's fame isn't that he makes tutorials...its the fact that its a westerner teaching westerners and with the idea of having some insight to making manga.

Unfortunately, he teaches nothing that never existed before. he's incredibly hyped....if he teaches just basics, and he was the only one doing it, then maybe.

i do like mark crilleys videos, but i dont really learn anything from them anymore, i can just look at the end picture and figure it out.

a very large amount of how to draw videos are generally "copy me while i draw this" style, so you only learn to draw the one picture, whereas a probably good video will be 4 times the length with a lot of explaining and at the end of it you can draw anything :P

mark crilley calls his books graphic novels, i cant recall him ever calling them manga, which is interesting.

@lumaria often i will find a how to draw book online somewhere and flick through it and its really good, and then i check the author and its a japanese name :P i still dont read them though :P
