Pen or Pencil?
« on: April 06, 2013, 06:20:56 PM »

I'm bored working on some artwork, so I was wondering which utensil to you guys enjoy using more?

I like using pen, even though you're limited to what you can fix if you make a mistake, I guess it forces you to do a better job and not abuse your eraser.

I agree with KagePen.
Pencil.

I'm naturally a very sketchy drawer. I draw something, then draw something again over it, then again. Imagine the evolution of something, how it slowly refines itself until it ends on a note nothing short of magnificence. Though, my drawings are nothing magnificent (yet), you get the point.

Without the ability to be erased and redone, my drawings would be nothing more than a fantastic blob of messy lines. So, I prefer a pencil.

Don't get me wrong, pens are wonderfully clean. They are great for line-work and definitely make a permanent impression. You won't ever have pen "smudge" over time like pencil does when transported, shifted around, or rubbed.

Just my two cents...

Pens. I just love them now for basically the same reasons you say Mashiry. I'm very badly self-deprecating in terms of art, and i think learning to accept my mistakes with pen and ink will help me grow as an artist

pen is great when you are on the move, as they dont snap or need sharpening like pencils
i like that pencils can be erased, but if you sketch lightly with pen the lines can hardly be seen, although using cheap pens like me means you lose a lot of control due to the cheapness of the pen itself.

if i had to do a final piece in paper, i would chose pencil
but if i was doing a digital art, i would use pen i think

from what i have seen pencils can give a better range of shades than you can achieve with a pen, although i use different shading techniques anyway for pen

Pencils.

I use mechanical pencils because they don't need to be sharpened after every ten minutes and because they often have a nifty eraser beneath the cap. :D Pencils allow you to re-do your mistakes so naturally I prefer them more than pens.

When sketching, pencils, H pencils to be exact, because they erase easily and barely leave marks.
But i never leave a manga drawing in pencil form, i always ink it, because ink really makes it feel more complete
