Any Famous manga creators outside of japan

Does anybody know anybody who is not from japan and has publish a manga and has actually gotten some type of recognition for it? Im african american so i feel more comfortable with creating a manga when i know someone of my same racial background has done it before.

Only people i Know so far are Mark Crilley and the creator of the boondocks.
I would greatly appreciate your help!

well i'll tell you straight up that no non japanese mangaka has made it big in japan. but there are plenty of well known nonjapanese mangakas in the comic world

I agree with legomaestro, Mark Crilley is in contract with Dark Horse Publishing, he is particularly well known for Miki's Fall and Brody's Ghost.

There are manwha artist aswell whom are the Chinese version of mangakas.

Since I don't live overseas I'm not exposed enough to know whose whose, Mark Crilley is about the only one I can think of because he is so well advertised and known across the web.

One common practice is to turn famous teen books into manga format, so the actual "artist" is not the author but is just hired to draw the manga.

Many OEL (Original English Language) books (mostly romance novels) have been drawn into the manga format by American/Canadian/French artists, this includes books like Harry Potter, Twilight and Vampire Kisses, just to name a few.

I can't give you the name of the Artists because they use pseudonyms (what a stupid thing to do) like REM, who the hell is REM? I have no idea.

I must tell you however that these people hired to do this are trained professionals with years of experience, and they don't get to do their own stories in that work, sadly.

Since that practice is common (in a sense of the work) it's also very rare in the sense that only a very few novels take the transformation, so that job opportunity is pretty hard to get and only choose people with gigantic resumes and skills.

Then you're better off writing a book, then if it is a success you can look into making it into a manga!

The only original story OEL mangas out there are Written and Drawn by the same person, meaning the author is both the Artist and the Writer, rare examples include siblings working on a title together but this is rare though.

I read an okayish non-japanese manga, Bizenghast, i enjoyed it.
