What is the best program to draw digitally?
« on: March 01, 2011, 02:59:23 PM »
If you had to use only ONE program to draw digitally, which one would you choose?

SAI? Photoshop ? Manga Studio?

I think I'd choose only Manga studio: it's the easiest to use to ink pictures and I'm sure it can give great coloring performances.

And you, which one would you choose?

If it's just to draw I'd choose manga studio too, even though it doesn't have vector support it's work-flow is at least 3x faster than photoshop and SAI.

For a single drawing program, I would use photoshop because of all the customizable features and methods of drawing available. I'm just sad it doesn't have stablization like Sai. >.<

@Corycaly: I've tried, and it works in a really odd yet interesting way, colors are actually applied as tones (with dots) but the Major downfall to it is that each color must be on a separate layer and that annoys me beyond belief. (If you find a way around it please do tell!)

My favourite one is SAI. I used to use Open Canvas in the past too but I didn't like it that much. I think Photoshop's ok as well.

I have heard a lot about Open canvas too! What is the difference between it and Photoshop?

Um, unlike Photoshop Open Canvas doesn't have much editing options. I guess it's more similiar to SAI rather than to PS? And it's actually more suited for painterly stuff. You can manipulate the brushes to achieve different effects and whatnot...

Opencanvas achieves a better pencil+paper feel, even better than Sai. Like Piniaco said, it's more for painting but the major advantage it has for that aspect is that its pixel color blending is a lot smoother and simpler than photoshop.

Opencanvas was also the main mini drawing program that the Japanese artists used before Sai was available.

Not that I know of but there are downloads for them all over the place. Just be wary of viruses.

Photoshop biggest advantage is that it has nearly unlimited power, only limited by the skill and knowledge of the person who uses it, sadly the average hobbyist artist will not be able to explore the wonders of photoshop unless you actually take classes or you are a graphic's professional.

Think of PS as a digital art sandbox, if you know how you can create anything.

There's also a very powerful program geared for doing traditional art the digital way, Corel Painter, extremely nice and powerful for emulating traditional art the digital way.

Don't forget Illustrator! ;)
It's great because it's a vectorial program~

I worked on photoshop but know I'm addicted to Illustrator.
