I found my core when writing by heart by soul (finally), and it will require me to rewrite the first chapter. I don't know if I can make my writing has life but I will try and do it with the help of articles. My main problem is motivation.

Oddly  enough i seem to be facing the same problem. No motivation. Whats worse is the ideas and concepts are being thrown around in my head. Its quite frustrating.

Motivation is really all that holds everyone back from completing their stories. I just realized recently the best solution to all of that is just going ahead and writing.

A ot of people have the idea that motivation is something you really need to get through a story, and it certainly helps, but is by no means required. Sometimes it is necessary to will your story Into creation.

In life we have to do things sometimes that we don't necessarily want to do all the time, but if you're a functional human being, you get out there and get it done anyway. That may sound like it takes away some of the romance, but will and determination have their own flair I think.

This is why I envy the pulp ages a lot. They were paid by the pence. They had inneficient typewriters, sure, but their only motivation was increasing word count rather than agonizing over the process. I can barely write these days because of the new-school narrative that suddenly a greek muse will float down from the skies and touch my head and suddenly I'll be inspired to write a grand novel.

Not happened so far.

I think of the James Bond novels. They were written an hour a day, one every year. He of course had the luxury of writing them while wintering in Jamaica, but the sentiment is there.

Seriously!? Goshdarnit... I need to read the James Bond Novels... And read them all. Make an ultimate binge of binges.

Wait. How do you winter in Jamaica? And I'd google but he legit wrote for only an hour a year?

From my experience, motivation is like a sugar-rush. You feel great the first few moments, but that quickly dies down. You feel bummed out and drained, and most importantly, you don't have the urge to do anything.

Building a work habit is more important in my opinion. You see people like George R.R. Martin and Stephen King writing tons of good books, and it's not just because they have motivation... you can get motivation for anything, even in something you don't necessary like. What is important is that you have habits. You build a habit of just writing things out, even if it's terrible. They sit down, write 1k, 2k, 3k a day, the word count starts adding up. Even in my workshop, I begun building that habit of just grinding out everyday, and "The Coming Storm" is probably the largest output I've ever done.

You build habits all the time, whether you know it or not. You build a habit of laziness when you start putting things off one-by-one. You build a habit of boredom when you refuse to do anything you're not interested in. The only thing you have to do is to keep up with your schedule. Set your mind to a goal. If you stick with it, starting with one day, then the next, then the next, you'll see it becomes natural to you overtime.

As a fun side note: studies show that it takes 7 weeks of continual practice to form a habit. This is why most exercise and diet routines fail. If you don't keep it up for 7 weeks, you're very likely to fall of the wagon.

7 weeks!? Seriously!? Damn that's nigh depressing. I'm never that dedicated.

I used to be all about the 1k a day, but then I took a procrastination to the knee.

Funny enough, I know how imporant motivation and productivity is, but even if I write a hell of a lot, I fail to make complete projects. Finishing things is as important as starting them in the first place, but I'm always so drained by the whole process of creating that I don't even bother beating up my draft into accepteable shape. Haven't done that in years, literally.

7 weeks? That's exactly the number of weeks in my workshop!  :o Coincidence? I think not!

We're down to our last two members... at the rate things are going, I doubt the workshop will last the rest of the month.  :( Not enough people committing to their stories! They write 5k-10k, then they get too bummed out to continue. Meanwhile I'm grinding my sockets out just to meet my own damn deadlines!

@lego: sorry, missed your questions up there. I mean he lived in Jamaica during the winter months instead of England. And he wrote one book a year, by writing an hour each day while in Jamaica.

Awesome. I must copy that somehow

@Operative yikes, that always sucks, but it was a really good idea coming up with it. At the time I definitely would've been one of the fall-outs, but now I'm mighty interested in writing
