Ive recently downloaded the newest version of gimp running with no problems with vista or Manhattan Graphics Pad and is loaded with plenty of well thought out tools...I love the build a brush feature...will come in very handy.

Also recently knocked of a free 30 day trial of painterX and when compareing the 2 together

Gimp is running right up painters rear end...
Add in gimps build a brush tool, Create or Load up a few of your own patterns and there running neck to neck...
Consider the hefty price tag of PainterX V's Gimp....Gimp takes the lead.

Yeah, Gimp seems fine. You should always back up your files no matter what graphics program you're using, and each time you reopen a file, make a copy of it first and work live on the copy.

Dito, I agree It is always best to work on a copy for each advancement of a project.. and if you are doing a lot of work save copys to a disk/flash/or other reliable storage device....

I will crash my computer with one good project if im not carefull...Art does not take long to exhaust and overwelm memory if your using a basic system.

What are you having trouble with? All the important stuff is on the image box... the box that comes up in the middle. If you maximize that box, it looks like any other graphics program. You can create a new image or load an image from that box. With the image box maximized, you'll have your tools on the left, and your layers on the right. Let us know what specific problem you're having and I'm sure someone can walk you through it.

Open up your drawing, then go to Colors/Levels on the top
Where it says Input Levels, start sliding the middle slider toward your right. Do it a little bit, then slide the farthest right slider down toward the left (you want to move these two closer to each other). Keep doing that until the lighter lines on your drawing are gone.

I love gimp only because it's free and I'm too lazy to crack a version of Photoshop.
Gimp is hard to get used to but it's really not all that bad. If you know how, you can get the same effects as photoshop.

Window 98 is a stone age OS ! well It work perfectly in Windows XP. Also I think early versions had bugs.

I'm personally quite fond of Gimp.

It did take me quite a while to get used to it but then thinking back so did photoshop.
Namely cause its free mean no issues with the wallet of piracy, its pretty capable at least as far as I have been. It is open source which means that if you have an issue you can go online and have a much higher chance of finding out that another user has not only had the same issue but looked into the coding and found the solution.

If however you want the 'best' photomanipulation program you should probably pick photoshop as having worked with both it does seem marginally better (to me).

These are all subjective opinions so yeah enjoy either my main piece of advice is try the free, open source version first if for no other reason than that in doing so your helping your fellow man. Then if its not up to your needs move on.
