Renders. i think, are basicly just drawings with a transperant background saved. so that you wont end up with a white or any colour background when placing the figures. As a smart Object for example.

There are a few different techniques for making renders, usually it involves getting a large HQ image and zooming in to around 1600% and very carefully using the pentool to extract the character from the image for use in gfx.
