--- Chapter Six: The Ecstasy of Gold---
---Cronus is looking down at the sheet of paper as Chione tries to lean in for a peek. The sheet has a picture of a ragged looking man in the middle; on the top large letters spell out WANTED and under that DEAD OR ALIVE; on the bottom of the sheet smaller letters spell out TUCO XIANGEL and under that ¶850 REWARD. In the background, at the entrance to the Dock a man with a blue Sampi symbol on his shoulder is seen leaving through the entrance gate.
Cronus: Hmm… Dead or alive eh? You sure this is the best job on that board? *looking up at Rhea*
Rhea: Unless you want to work in town then yeah. *Cronus hands the paper back to Rhea*
Cronus: *sighs* All right, guess we should set up camp then. Judging by this guy’s price we might be here a while. *he starts towards the entrance to the docks*
Rhea: Hold it Cronus, *she grabs him by the backpack and drags him back to her, then puts her arm around his neck* Chione and I are going to set up camp up on that ridge, *she points at a mesa like ridge on the south side of town, paper still held in the hand she’s pointing with* while you *she slams the paper into Cronus’s chest* are going to find what you can in town. *grumbling Cronus shakes off his backpack and throws it to Chione, pulls down on his hat, and walks towards town* *Rhea looks back towards Chione* C’mon, there’s something we need to talk about.
--- A few hours later Chione is seen trying to lite the camp fire. Finally something catches and the fire grows. Chione puts a pot on the fire and shuffles through Cronus’ bag to find the top. Rhea walks up as Chione puts the lid on the pot.
(note, wor- or word- means the sentence was cut off)
Rhea: You froze up.
Chione: *turning to face Rhea* Wha-
Rhea: When we were attacked by the bandits, you froze up. And if the timing had been any different, we would all be dead now. You may have proved helpful, but that’s useless if you have a weakness like the one you showed me yesterday.
Chione: *standing up to face Rhea* I’m sorry if I see value in life, but that doesn’t-
Rhea: Life valuable? Humans decided on that with the old war, and it’s been that way since.
Chione: *getting angry* Just because you’ve given up on caring for others, doesn’t mean that I have to.
Rhea: *moving closer to Chione, with a harsh tone in her voice* I may not give a *censored* about the lives of bandits who pillage, rape, and murder innocent people, but if you keep it up *moving even closer* you won’t be able to protect yourself, or anyone you care about.
Chione: I kept you alive on that boat didn’t I!
Rhea: *stares at Chione a bit, then steps back and composes herself* Fine… It looks like we’ll need a hands on demonstration. *Rhea jumps backwards with a backflip, landing on one of the tall pillars behind her. Her hands hover over her pistols as Chione moves her hands closer to her daggers. Painting the sky with oranges, reds and purples the bottom of the sun touches the horizon and the two draw their weapons.
---2 Hours earlier (about an hour after the group split up) Cronus is seen walking through a crowded street. As he walks the shops begin to thin out, being replaced by more official looking architecture. Cronus finally ends up standing in front of a large building with intricate architecture. There are large wooden doors with various religious symbols embedded in the wood, along with tall stained glass windows that depict humans driving freaks and Chimeras away from shelters. The roof of the building is pyramidal steps leading up to a dome shaped pinnacle and at the top stands a large Sampi symbol carved out of stone. Cronus looks around then peaks in the doors. He finds a large assembly of men and women adorned in scraps of shiny metal made to look like European armor. Standing at a podium in front of the large mass of people is a burly man with obvious war scars. He wears a true set of European knights armor and behind him hangs a white drape depicting a large blue Sampi symbol. The man holds his helmet as he addresses the people.
Varrenian Commander: -slipping thorugh our fingers! They are the scum of the earth, the plague of humanity and we are letting them sail by with their lives?! We can no longer sit idly by and leave our waterway AND OUR CITIZENS unprotected from those beasts called Chimera! *loud cheering from the crowd, the commander holds up his hands to quiet them* My trusted agents of Varren, you must rally your men. We will fortify this town and take back our ports, and then
(note: italics means thinking)
Cronus: ...*Cronus steps back from the large building, backing away at first then he turns and runs back towards the market area of town* This is bad… This is really bad.
Varrenian Commander: (cont. back in the building) we move north, up the river to the town of the damned. There we will stop this disaster at the source and destroy those who defile themselves with the company of beasts! *Crowd erupts in cheer and the Commander holds up both his hands in the V-for-victory sign*
--- Back at camp Rhea and Chione are getting into their fight. Rhea is keeping her distance while keeping Chione pinned in one spot with a barrage of PEP fire.
Rhea: Remember those bastards you saw me kill? Those bandits that attacked us in the canyon? *Rhea jumps from one pillar to the next, continuously shooting at Chione* Remember how their bodies fell limp on the ground and their eyes rolled back in their heads!? *Chione freezes as the memory of seeing Rhea kill the bandits flashes through her mind. She’s brought back to reality by three PEP shots that whizz by her head*
Rhea: *Rhea looks down and lets her hands fall against her sides, her eyes tear up slightly but she’s too far away for Chione to notice* (quietly to herself) Never… Never again… *Rhea raises her head to stare at Chione* I won’t let you end up like them! *She takes aim again and begins to fire at Chione again. Chione reflects the shots randomly around her. Eventually a shot is reflected back towards Rhea. Rhea jumps towards another pillar while still firing. Chione’s eyes narrow and she reflects a shot at the pillar Rhea is just about to land on. The rock explodes and Rhea lands on the loose gravel left by the explosion. Her foot slips on the rubble and she lands hard on her back. Chione walks up to where Rhea is laying, puts away her daggers and glares down at Rhea. Chione opens her mouth to say something but she’s interrupted by clapping that’s coming from behind her. She quickly turns around, her hands on the grips of her daggers but she relaxes when she finds out its Cronus.*
Cronus: You two get that out of your sysem? *Rhea groans in response* Good ‘cause were in some deep *censored*. The Varrens are planning on stepping up security around Fort Tusken, which means we can’t stick around here long and that every second we wait to catch that bounty the harder it gets to cash him in. If we want any cash at all we’ve got to move now. *He walks over to Rhea and starts to help her up* Chio, go put out the fire and grab anything we’ll need to track this guy down.
Chione: *looks back at Rhea for a second* All right. *she goes to sift through the groups belongings*
Cronus: *talking lightly only to Rhea* You know this is the kind of thing that takes time right?
---(about 3 hours later) The three are standing on a mesa north of Fort Tusken, from their vantage point the can see multiple other mesas that eventually turn into mountains in the distance. There is practically no plant life on top of the mesas but there is dense vegetation in the valleys between the mesas.
Rhea: You sure you heard the north side of Tusken? *scanning the area with her goggles down*
Cronus: Yeah, supposedly he likes to stay in one of the valleys around here. They say he doesn’t move much so more people can find him.
Rhea: More people? *looking back at Cronus holding up her goggles with her right hand*
Cronus: Well… He uhh… He kills anyone that finds him.
Rhea: WHAT?!
Chione: I smell smoke…
Cronus: Huh?
Rhea: Where?
Chione: *pointing* It’s that way, probably behind that mesa.
Cronus: All right then, let’s go check it out.
--- (10 minutes later) The group is walking through one of the valleys pushing through the dense vegetation. Rhea sticks her hand out motioning to stop walking. She pulls down her goggles and jumps up one of the nearby trees. Standing on a thin branch she surveys the area. She stops partially though the scan and stares in that direction for a bit before she jumps back down.
Rhea: There’s a big fire in a clearing up ahead, and it looked like there was a tent nearby too. If we circle around the left side before moving in we should be kept pretty well hidden.
---After walking a bit longer the group comes up on the clearing. They crouch down behind some cover and look into the now visible camp sight. Inside they can see the tent and many other campsite amenities, along with a very large fire that is being tended to by the same ragged man from the wanted poster. The man has long, unkempt and dirty hair and wears worn leather based clothes. In his hand is a dark stained machete that he is using to poke at the fire. As the man sits and pokes at the fire part of the base of the fire gives out causing the “fuel” to shift. As this shift occurs something seems to fall out of the fire, but it’s still partially in the fire as well. With closer inspection The gang is able to see that the object is actually an arm, charred black by the flames.
