fair enough, in this case I was more talking out loud rather than suggesting you made any changes. But either way it's good you've got justifications because it means you've got a solid action plan and you've thought your project out well.

Also good call to move the release date to match your schedule, especially with larger projects like this you don't know how it will work out until you do it, so having the flexibility to make adjustments is key to long-term success.

@Suuper And to that point, even all the planning in the world can't account for setbacks, so it's always good to hear feedback on how things are going and what suggestions should be had. Keep giving your thoughts and opinions! It all helps to improve the project! You might already notice some changes to the writing and polling recently  ;)

One last note, my artist is currently extending their break, so no promises that we'll see a return on the artwork anytime soon. This project is a side-project, and I don't expect anyone to be fully committing to it for any reason, so something for you guys to bear in mind as we continue thru the year (Everyone deserves a vacation after all  8) )

Of course, any support is welcomed, whether that be feedback in the forum, participating in the polls, or contributing to Project Serendetia's Patreon! With enough backing, we'll churn this small-bit project out into a full-fledged production, but that won't happen without your support! Keep cheering us on, and we'll ensure your investment pays off handsomely  ;)

Well this week is way past overdue...

As the Fates would have it, as soon as I switched over to the new Wednesday update format, life decides to hit me with an emergency, and I have to drop everything I'm doing to handle the situation. I can't say that emergency has been all been handled just yet, but it's in a better spot than it was some days ago. So rest assured, we're now back to our regularly scheduled program!

To make up for the lost week and the abrupt radio silence from my end, I'll be hosting an art commission giveaway to those that vote in this week's poll!  8) It's the least I can do for all the support you've given thus far  ;)

Week 12

Mr. Takami and Talon pull into the underground parking garage and park in a green-painted lot near the entranceway to the Kubozaki Police Department Headquarters. A visitor’s tag swings from the van’s dashboard mirror as Mr. Takami shuts off the engine. The two get out and Talon stares around at the black spheres dotting the walls and hanging from the ceiling.

“There are cameras everywhere,” notes Talon.

“It’s a police station,” Mr. Takami plainly says.

“Not just. We don’t know who’s really watching.”

“If it’s the people you’re worried about, I can assure you the Minami family has more eyes and ears around here than they ever will.”

Just then, Mr. Takami’s cell rings. He pulls it out of his pocket and looks at the number.

“Who is it?” Talon asks.

“It’s the Commissioner.” Mr. Takami taps the phone and greets Dobashi with a joyous welcome. “Ah, Dobashi! We’re just outside…”

Mr. Takami’s warm face suddenly drops as he listens to the Commissioner’s next words.

“Where’s this question coming from?”

Talon takes notice. He and Mr. Takami share stern looks before the old man continues his conversation.

“The men in suits… was one of them a blonde man? 180? Yankee accent?” Mr. Takami asks.

A small pause.

“Yes… he was intruding on my property some days ago, trying to pick the locks on a door. Not an ethical Interpol agent you have there.”

“It’s them,” Talon says.

Mr. Takami listens to Dobashi’s next words, but his expression only grows darker as the conversation carries on.

“Listen Dobashi. We’ve been pals for ages. You know I’d never go as far as working with… what? No, that’s… That’s a conversation for another time!”

Talon darts his eyes between Mr. Takami and the sliding doors leading into the station. They can’t afford to waste anymore time.

“We need to hurry. Leah could be in trouble.”

The old man nods. “Look, you’ll just have to trust me. We don’t have much time. Where’s Leah?”

A brief moment passes as the phone whispers.

“She’s heading to Room 1G. That’s on the other side of the building,” Mr. Takami says, shutting the phone off. “Go. I’ll radio the crew for backup.”

“But where’s 1G?” he asks.

“Just follow the maps! They’re all over the place.”

Behind a glass panel wall, Leah and Daiji observe the rows of trainees practicing their martial arts under the watchful eyes of their masters. Some toss their fists in steady rhythm, while others demonstrate techniques to neutralize and subdue their targets, practicing kicks and tosses upon foam mats.

“I’ve never seen those kinds of moves before,” says Leah.

“What kind of martial arts do you do Ms. Takami?” Kichiro asks.

“I’m not sure, actually,” she admits. “I’ve only been taught a few moves, but I was never told what they were called.”

“Really now?” he says, seemingly taken aback by Leah’s words. Leah shakes her head.

“The classes teach a mix of martial arts,” Daiji mentions. “Perhaps if you can demonstrate those moves, we can figure out which one’s for you.”

Leah’s eyes light up. “That sounds like fun! Let’s do it!”

“You’ll need a sparring partner then,” Kichiro explains. “I hope you’re up to the task, Mr. Sasamoto.”

“Don’t you have someone else for her to demonstrate on?” Daiji says.

“What’s the matter? Afraid I’ll be too hard on you?” Leah teases.

“More the opposite, really.”

Kichiro chuckles. “In that case, let’s have Mr. Sasamoto take the lead here. Ms. Hinohara and I will get a mat set up for you two, and you can go change out into your uniforms.”

Leah grips her fists in excitement. “Alright! I can’t wait to show off what I can do.”

“Don’t get too cocky. Mr. Sasamoto here is a black belt,” says Kichiro.

“You didn’t need to mention that…” Daiji utters.

“Then I look forward to learning more from you, Teacher,” Leah says, bowing to Daiji.

“...sure,” he mutters, as he turns away toward the changing rooms.

“I’ll get you a uniform you can use, Ms. Takami,” Eiko says.

As the group departs, Kichiro’s phone rings. He rustles through his pocket, and sees it’s the Commissioner’s number.

“Commissioner?” he answers. “What can I do for you?”

Talon is fuming. Standing at the front desk, he raises his voice upon hearing the woman’s next words.

“What do you mean I have to wait!?” he cries out. Heads turn toward the racket at the reception.

“All visitors must have an authorized escort before entering the premises. You must wait until one becomes available.”

“There’s no time to wait! This is urgent!”

“What kind of visit is this again?”

“I’m not visiting, I’m here to get someone.”

“Do you have a name? I can get someone to fetch her for you.”

“No, I need to get her myself.”

“Then you’ll need to wait, Sir.”

As Talon continues to argue with the receptionist, the elevators open to the sight of two foreign men in black suits. A blonde man with combed-back hair and sunglasses steps out with his partner following behind.

“Are we in?” Joe asks.

“Feeds are live,” Nathan replies. “We should have surveillance access now.” Just then, the man suddenly stops. He blinks a few times, adjusting his shades.

“What’s wrong?”

“Must be a glitch or something. It says the targets are in this building.”

Their attention soon turns to the argument happening at the desk. The heads-up display locks in on Talon’s face, and sounds the alert on a positive match.

“It’s Him!” Nathan yells, pointing at the young man.

Talon turns and locks eyes with the two men as they immediately bolt towards him. With no time to lose, Talon kicks into high gear and vaults over security turnstiles, knocking over the guards and sounding the alarm across the building.

“Stop that man!” Joe screams as he and Nathan vault over the turnstiles as well. The police, though dazed by the sudden chaos, join in on the pursuit and begin radioing in on the situation.

“Damn it, Leah!” Talon curses. “This was a bad idea!”

He spots two officers up ahead in the corridor. They immediately take positions to block his path, arms outstretched and ready to pounce. With a crowd closing in from behind, he has to improvise. He spots a wastebasket off to their side. He makes a mad sprint towards them, but as they get ready to jump, he veers off to the side and delivers a solid kick that sends the wastebasket flying into the face of the nearest officer, knocking him down clean. The other officer tries to tackle him, but with a burst of speed, Talon flies right past just before the officer could nab his legs, sending the officer tumbling over and face planting on the cold, hard floor.

With his heart racing and his sweat gleaming off the side of his face, Talon swerves past suits and badges, the commotion of his pursuers following just behind. He sneaks a quick glimpse at one of the large maps of the building posted along the walls,

“1G… that’s on the other side alright. But how can I get there with the whole building after me?”

Talon’s cell rings. He hastily plucks it out from his pocket and answers.

“Mr. Takami?” he says.

But a woman’s voice instead replies. “Where are you now?”

It sounds familiar. “Ms. Yoshida?”

“Where are you now?” she repeats.

Talon hesitates. He looks around and sees the corridor marking. “1C,” he shouts.

“Take a right. There’s maintenance stairs not far ahead. It’ll be marked by a blue door.”

Following her instructions, Talon makes the turn and sees the blue door. But there’s a problem.

“There’s a key swipe on the door!” he shouts as he’s running up to it.

“Just open it. You’ll be fine.”

As Talon approaches the door, the key swipe’s red light suddenly turns green and there’s a click. He yanks the door handle and shuts the maintenance door behind him. He can hear officers on the other side yelling and banging on the door.

“I’m in,” Talon says.

“Good. Now head downstairs.”

“Will that get me to Leah?” he asks.

“No, but I need you to check on the mainframe that’s on that level. I can’t access the cameras, so I don’t know where your sister is right now.”

Talon let out an aggravated groan. “We’re wasting time! She could already be captured, or worse, killed!”

“Which is why I need you to get me connected back into surveillance.”

Talon paces around the floor, his breath wheezing from the adrenaline, then looks ahead towards the dimly-lit concrete corridors of pipes and shafts.

“Okay. What do I need to do?”

Here we go once more! We resume our adventures with Leah and Talon  8)

Week 13

With the changing room all to themselves, Leah tugs on her black belt, ensuring a snug fit as she grins with delight at the hanging mirror before her.

“It’s a perfect fit!” Leah exclaims, stretching her arms around in the soft fabric of her borrowed robes. “Thank you Miss Hinohara!”

“It’s no problem,’ Eiko replies. “Though, if you want that black belt yourself, you’ll have to work plenty to get one.”

“How long have you been practicing?” Leah curiously asks.

“Sixteen years. I got mine just before I graduated high school, and just kept at it since.”

Leah’s eyes light up. “Wow, that long? You must be a pro then!”

Eiko cocks a slight grin. “There’s plenty of others that are more skilled than me. Inspector Kichiro’s had over twenty, and the Commissioner even more.”

“Is everyone here a black belt then?” Leah pouts at the thought. “Now I’m feeling left out...”

A playful chuckle escapes Eiko. “Well, you better get going if you want to keep up.”

“Right! Let’s see just how tough Daiji really is!” Leah cracks her knuckles, ready for her showdown.

As Leah heads out into the training room, Eiko’s phone suddenly rings. She pulls it out to see it’s Kichiro. With a quick tap, she answers her superior.

“Yes, Inspector?”

“Is Ms. Takami still with you?” Kichiro asks, a sharp concern in his voice. That’s never a good sign.

She turns to the door swinging back closed. “She just went out to the mat.” Eiko replies.

“Don’t lose sight of her. Especially when she’s around Mr. Sasamoto.”

Without hesitation, Eiko replies back with a stern voice. “Understood, Sir.”

As she hangs up the phone, alarms ring out across the building, brilliant red spewing across the walls. A breach in the building. Eiko doesn’t hesitate to rush straight into the training room and quickly yell out to the two teens, who had just begun to take their places on the mat.

“Both of you, follow me! We need to go!” Eiko calls out.

“What’s going on?” Daiji asks.

“I don’t know, but we need to get to the safe room. Now!”

Daiji and Leah exchange worried glances before following Eiko out of the training room, not knowing what to expect.

Kichiro waits anxiously by the training room doors as a wave of staffers and policemen rush by in both directions, the deafening alarms screeching across the halls as an announcer calls out from the speakers.

“Attention! Security breach at Section A. All personnel, please head to the nearest safe room. This is not a drill.”

“What the devil is going on?” he mutters. Just then, Eiko flings open the training room doors with Leah and Daiji scurrying close behind.

“Inspector, what’s the situation?” Eiko asks.

“I’ve no clue. I’m still getting word on the situation,” he replies. He then looks at Leah and Daiji, still dressed in their martial arts uniforms. Even with the place in complete chaos, he shoots the two a playful smile. “Quite a spectacle we have going on here, don’t you think?”

Leah however, shoots Kichiro a serious look. “Where’s my brother?”

Kichiro blinks. “Brother?”

“Don’t toy with me. This is exactly what you people did last time.”

“Ms. Aya, what are you on about?” Daiji asks, taken aback by her words.

Leah mutters under her breath. “Trying to use me as bait to lure my brother in... I should’ve known better. I was hopeful even…”

Kichiro and Eiko share a brief glance at one another, though neither one could piece together her meaning.

“Ms. Takami, I don’t know what you’re going on about,” Kichiro says. He reaches for her shoulder, but she immediately slaps it away and begins to back away. The three are shocked by Leah’s sudden mood change.

“Leah… what’s going on?” Daiji beckons.

“These people… they killed my parents and tried to kill me and my brother too. And now they’re here to finish it.”

She nods to the group of men in black suits fast approaching them, guns drawn and dark shades beaming right at them. As the others turn their attention to these suits, Leah prepares to make a dash for the other end of the hall, but her escape is cut off by more black suits approaching from that direction. There’s nowhere left to run.

The four immediately find themselves surrounded as the black suits raise their weapons at them. One of the black suits shouts out to them.

“Hands up! Don’t move!”

Leah grits her teeth and clenches her fist. This could be the end for her. She contemplates her options. She eyes Kichiro’s sidearm. Should she go for it? There’s too many of them. Then she looks around the hallway. No exits nearby. Even so, how could she break through so many men? Is surrender the only choice left?

As they raise their hands, Daiji moves in front of Leah, putting himself between her and the guns.

“Daiji?” Leah utters, taken aback by his selflessness.

“Just stay behind me,” he tells her.

Kichiro begins to speak up. “My name is Watabe Kichiro, Chief Inspector of the Kubozaki Police Department. I demand to know…”

“Hand the girl over. We’re taking her into custody,” a bald man said, ignoring Kichiro’s words.

“Miss Takami is under custody of the Kubozaki Police Department.”

“I won’t ask again, Chief Inspector. Hand her over.” The suits’ guns train their sights, but not at Kichiro. It’s Daiji.

Kichiro and Eiko form a wall between Daiji and Leah, a staunch face of defiance eyeing back against the black suits.

“Miss Takami is under custody of the Kubozaki Police Department,” he repeats. “If you want her, you’ll have to go through us.”

The bald man scoffs at him. “Wrong answer.”

As the bald man begins to utter his next words, Eiko spots a small cylindrical object rolling between the man’s legs and stopping right before Kichiro. Her eyes widen and immediately covers Daiji and Leah with her back.

In a split second, a loud bang erupts, followed by a blinding flash of light, disorienting everyone in its vicinity as a cadre of heavily armed troopers in tactical gear, riot shields and rifles storm in, shouting aloud to the black suits.

“Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads!”

The bald man complies, followed by the rest of his men. They kneel on the floor with their hands clasped behind their heads as the troopers lock cuffs onto each and every one of them before forcing them to the ground. One of the troopers goes to check on Kichiro and his companions.

“Sir, are you alright?”

Kichiro blinks, his eyes rapidly dilating. “I can’t see anything, but I’d gladly take a flashbang over getting shot anyday.”

“Sorry about that, Sir. We came as soon as we could.”

Eiko unfurrows her arms from Daiji and Leah. “Are you two alright?”

“My ears are ringing, but I’m fine,” Daiji says. He turns to Leah, her head held low and her lips shut tight. “Miss Takami?”

She raises her head, a grim look on her face. She had accused them of being with the very people that killed her parents without a second thought, only to realize she’d been wrong. But now they too are in danger. She could only utter a few words back.

“I’m sorry...”

Eiko, with a gentle smile, reaches out and rubs Leah’s head. “It’s alright. You’re safe now. Those people won’t bother you anymore.”

Leah shakes her head. “I’m sorry I’ve dragged you all into this. It was stupid of me to come here and think everything would be fine.”

Daiji then asks. “Aya, is there something you’re not telling us… who are those people?”

Eiko chimes in. “Let’s get you two checked out first. Then Miss Takami, we’ll have a talk. I’m sure you both need some time to yourselves after what’s happened.”

“No. Not now,” Leah insists. “I need to know where my brother is.”

Talon slowly approaches the metallic door to the server room. Putting his ear against the doorframe, he could hear the loud rumbling, buzzing, and whirring of fans inside. There’s no telling if there’s anyone inside. He checks the door handle and slowly pulls it down. Locked. Rummaging through his pants pockets, Talon pulls out a set of metal twigs before working through the keyhole. Within less than a minute, he hears a small click. He checks the door handle one more time, and pulling it gently, he hears the unlatching of the lock. He’s through.

Keeping the door ajar, Talon peers through the small gap to see if anyone is inside. Near the towering server racks, he could distinctly see two silhouettes hiding behind a panel tapping away at what sounds like a keyboard.

“Subject 2 located,” a voice calls out. “Delta 10, move to intercept at 1G.”

That’s Leah’s location.

Talon calls back Ms. Yoshida. “I’m at the server room, but there’s some people here. I can hear them talking about room 1G.”

“They must be the ones interfering with my connection. Is there any way you can get them out?” she asks.

Talon peers back into the server room. The men appear occupied with whatever device they’re observing. They sent people over to 1G, so Leah must still be there. But then again, they’re still searching for him as well. It won’t do him any good to get caught before he reaches Leah. There has to be a way through…
