Renegade Robot
« on: April 21, 2022, 09:09:54 AM »
I wasn't sure whether to post about this in artists or writers, as I'm writing and drawing my manga series: Renegade Robot.

Set during a wave of industrial revolution, humans are reliant on robots for everything, and they are treated as nothing more than appliances. It is believed that robots are incapable of expressing emotions, independent thought or freewill. That is until one day, when a lowly Maintenancebot called Bolt decides to rebel against the humans after a traumatic experience awakens his consciousness. After becoming a wanted criminal, Bolt goes on a journey to gather up like-minded robots and dismantle the fabric of human society.

It has a heavy manga and steampunk influence. I'm planning an epic sci-fi tale.

I can be read at either of these places:

https://www.patreon.com/renegaderobot

I will upload art from it into the artist's section too.

Please let me know what you think. There are five chapters so far.

To clarify the best place for it Vuric, I've moved this topic to the Members Manga board. This is where realized manga go, since as you point out, it's a bit of a split question.

You've got a real strange juxtaposition between the almost Saturday morning cartoon nature of the artwork and the grittiness of the story. I'm going to have to delve in further at a later time (it's the middle of the workday), but first impressions are pretty strong!

Will review stories upon request. My latest arc: http://goo.gl/KYgsfF

Oh I remember seeing this ages ago!
You're still writing it! That's great!
It's a fun read with a relatively unique storyline. Definitely would want to see how the story goes from here.

Yes by definition creating a manga is also a writing project, but having the art makes it more final, i.e. that's the actual output, not just a script to draw later.

Regarding your video on your patreon, it's quite difficult to read the text, not only the multi-colour font is a bit funny on the eyes (try black with a white outline instead?), but the dark lines in the background interfere with reading it. Just a point.

Regarding your art, there's a couple of things that might make your work a little more polished with not too much effort. One is the line colours - it looks like it's drawn in pencil? That's not an issue having a dark grey colour, but the speech text is a solid black which contrasts strangely. Either make the font a dark grey instead or post edit your images to increase the contrast and make the lines black.
You could also use a fine-liner pen to go over the lines, making them solid black, and then erase all the pencil, but that's a bit of an increase in workflow and effort.

Here's an example that I edited the levels of in GIMP.

I also noticed on a few panels that your original sketch is showing through - it hasn't been erased properly.
Here's an image I edited to make it a little more visible:

Sketching rough with a 2H pencil, and "inking" final lines with a 2B pencil, might help to make your work pop more, and keep the rough sketches from showing through. Sketching more lightly will also make it easier to erase mistakes.

Keep it up! producing a finished product is no mean feat, and you've completed 5 chapters already! You've definitely got what it takes to get better :D
