Silent Manga
« on: March 14, 2020, 01:35:51 PM »
do you think it's possible to have a serial manga that's silent? i.e. a full blown story with arcs and stuff.

there's always one-shots and competitions that are for silent manga, but I don't think I've ever seen one longer than a single chapter.

And what do you think are the limits of a silent manga, what things can't be conveyed through context alone?
conversely are there special ways to convey things in a silent manga that aren't used in a normal manga?

I would definitely read it hands down. And they've been legendary seinen manga that have so many unnarrated moments the panel count alone would be enough for two issues of a serialized manga.

It would be an interesting gimmick, and of course, if anything is able to show emotion and narration then it is manga.  Japanese really brought up what sequential images can achieve. Timing would also be super important.

What plot would work, though

true many mangas have quiet moments, or even quiet chapters which can make a nice change.

I think romance would work well because it's quite predictable whats going on from the context.

slice of life would get hit hard because it's often very general or random themed chapters that might be hard to tell from context alone

comedy would end up being slapstick I guess because you can't have written jokes.

fighting/shounen might manage it although the impact of the fighting would be strange without shouting attack names. the fight sequences would look good but would probably have to be clearer with what's going on.

well I think any genre would have to make sure it's clear what's going on haha

I get the feeling that silent mangas have a faster pace, maybe because they dont have exposition pages.

a manga that's based on a true story or a well known story, such as a world war battle or something might actually work well, because the reader has an absolute ton of information from previous stories and documentaries, so you can get away with not talking about things because the reader already knows them. like looking back on your old photos and you're like "oh yeah this was when i did xyz"

similarly anything that plays on well known tropes and stereotypes would have an advantage.

alternatively a style that plays on the art style being beautiful to look at, so the focus is less on the actual story, but more on the beautiful artwork, could get away with a slower paced story, and therefore more chances at shots which convey information without text.

I mean there are silent (or almost silent) anime out there, so no reason silent manga can't work. You just have to be very expressive and impressive visually. What jumps to mind immediately is Angels Egg. There's only a couple of lines of dialogue in the whole film, but God if it don't leave you with something to think about.

I wonder if researching mimes would be of any help? Surely there are mimes out there who have elevated the artform past getting stuck in boxes or lassoing themselves.

Will review stories upon request. My latest arc: http://goo.gl/KYgsfF

There is (and were) silent manga (without dialogue) that were serialized. But they are episodic I think, and not of the arc-type/long-form storytelling.

One of them was Gon; synopsis < https://myanimelist.net/manga/1470/Gon

And then there's Joshi Kausei, which is a slife-of-life that only uses SFX. < https://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=104209

Joshi Kausei looks pretty neat, I like it!

I'll have to look into mostly silent animes, the thought hadn't crossed my mind that they would exist at all.

Miming would certainly give an interesting starting point for research, although I think that would relate more to animation because of the movement involved, but worth a look into.

I think I'd like to do at least a one shot thats silent.

I remember stumbling upon Gon at a point. Super gory and stuff, but it never really caught my interest. I'll try it out again. Joshi Kausei I've never heard of. Might be something to look at indeed.

Also an idea inspired by being indoors lately: A great silent manga would take place in a room, or at least a small apartment. Lot's of prelim Google Sketchup for the entirety of the apartment but after that it could be smooth sailing. Heck, you could literally catalogue every item the OC has and make a sort of character study silent manga.

It could range from psychological to romance a horror situation. With a PC, books and various hobby stuff (guitars, drums? sewing kit?) you could make a nice couple of chapters about a character that the reader learns to live with over time.

Oh gawd that'd be some potential for some heart strings pulling. Imagine it concluding with him finally moving out after getting married (or maybe he has to take care of aging parents or he just has to move).

In fact, there's some cool 4koma webtoons out there with a 4-panel format, full colour that explore all sorts of topics involving hikikomori or similar types. This could really work

inb4 MR manga/webcomic haha

yeah you've really got to draw on facial expressions, and stuff to show relationships and feelings, like looking fondly at an old photo etc
deciding on the story length and chapter count would have an effect on how it plays out, that is, there are different paces that you could tell a story at, to convey different things. The beginning 10 minutes of Pixar's UP, for example is a very fast paced emotion stirrer, that covers maybe 70 years or more very quickly.

Haha believe you me that's always been my goal with MR Fanart and the Hero Coats thing. I just want to be able to draw Raider comics for fun without thinking about it too much and mess around. Would see it as a win-win

UPs opening alone was worth a shortfilm that could win awards on its own. So good. I love that sort of storytelling.

I've also found simple 'poking at food' scenes more emotionally effective than you'd believe. Of course, being able to draw food being prepared and all is the goal but even just showing an MC drinking a soda or pushing their food is pretty nice panel-filling stuff. (Also it's perfect for avoiding drawing backgrounds. You get nice zoom ins with that.)

food is a whole separate category of art as far as I'm concerned lol
but true, it's the everyday things that teach us a lot about a person, their likes and dislikes.
also their reactions to stuff, like the dynamics and relationships.

I think mangas without words are very good as a form of episodic storytelling. It would be very hard to convey a long story with multiple arcs without using any words - which also means giving up with describing the setting of a story and building separate plots. You'd have to show the world with just pictures and the reader should guess where he/she is by observing backgrounds, characters's clothing and looks etc.
It would also look kinda mysterious - it's hard to imagine a world where no one's talking to each other. It could be an element of the whole plot or some form of presenting abstraction thinking.
I also think that mangas without words are meant to show a short moment in time - a fleeting moment where the reader is focused on action only.
But I won't say that it's impossible because with visual arts you can tell almost anything. So it's mostly a matter of visual skills. Also knowledge on interpreting symbols, contrasts, shapes and a lot more.

That's a fair point, but I think silent mangas don't always imply that the people aren't talking to each other, but that it just doesn't show it.
It's definitely a good challenge, everyone should try it at some point :P

YES! You made me remember a situation when you can insert pictures in speech bubbles in place of text. Man, I even did this myself XD
You can also check out some of the Silent Manga Audition entries from all over the world. You'll see that most of the communication is made by human gesture and facial expressions - and with just these you can show a vast variety of emotions.
But I still think it would be hard for the original world building meant for a story with multiple arcs where some places or creatures are something new and mysterious for the readers. You'd really need great visual skills for that.
