Wyvern's Drawings (Looking for feedback)
« on: May 21, 2019, 12:48:14 PM »
Hi! I'm still new to art in many ways, although i draw since i was a child i never was good enough for the art I wanted, recently i started to get some good looking art and I wanted to share it here.

I use a Cintiq 13HD and Clip Studio Paint, mainly for manga art, I will be showing more these days.

I think i'm somewhat decent but I really dont know how to draw folds, i'm new to screentones and contrast too so anything you can tell me would be helpful ^^

Spoiler

Also some sketchs:

More soon btw, tell me what you think :)

in terms of contrast, the first two have a great balance of light and dark parts which looks awesome. they also look perfect manga style like it just came straight out of a book :P

I'm guessing it's your brush setting but the sketches seem to be very dotted along the lines, is that just a pencil brush or something?
nice expressions on all the faces :)
looking forward to seeing more!

Its the brush and resolution probably, I used the real pencil tool for those (clip studio paint), its more noticiable on lower resolution.

I spent around 2 weeks with the name of a manga i'm drawing, the drawings are ugly because they are a name and i dont know how much time i will take to make it with that quality but thats what i'm aiming for right now, its something i wanted to do in a while.

Those drawings are characters that will appear in the manga, although i'm drawing the name of only chapter 1 right now xD!

Glad to read that the contrast is balanced and looks good :p

I time the drawings I do so I can predict how long it will take to do future work haha but yeah it can be a bit of an unknown because it's hard to know how long pages take to draw and if you will get stuck on something along the way.

XD

have you sketched many pages of the name yet?
are you aiming at a target page count, or just trying to get the whole idea on paper?

I just finished the name, of chapter 1, about 38 pages including cover, i'm doing it in spanish (because it's my native language) and translating it later but...

I think i have drawn around 16 pages today, but yeah, i dont put much time into each page, only enough to understand what is going on

Its not better than this:
Spoiler

My idea is to get a longer chapter 1 and then 24 pages per chapter although i dont know if i will be able to met that

thats a nice amount of pages for a chapter, the monthly mangas are 45 pages I think? I can just about read Spanish so no worries there :P
well a name is only meant to be a rough draft, although the amount of detail does vary from artist to artist. and wow 16 pages in one day? that's a lot, even for a sketch :P
nice swirly clouds!

For the rough page. I see a sky city. Three characters about to go into a tunnel

It's an execution on a sky city methinks.

I love how much dimension you have in your name there Wyvern, and your toned image does look pro as suuper said. Great stuff.

For me making manga has always been a case of 'storyboard vs. finished product.' I try to learn how many pages I can actually draw by seeing how fast and good my storyboards are.

Optimally, in terms of effort and time spent I want storyboards to be 80% and finished page 20%. Right now as I am storyboards have 45% and the finished page takes 55% effort from me. It's not good. I quit a lot of good ideas because I'm too annoyed at having to fill in the frames, clean up (some) lines and be satisfied.

It's why I've actually sometimes just rage quit and tried to draw manga directly, but in the end I've found having a storyboard actually makes the process more streamlined and faster.

The solution? Improve your sketches. Draw a heck of a lot of sketches so that your basic 'name' is awesome.

Just google 'Death Note' or 'Air Gear' Names and see what level names these epic mangaka work with. Seriously they could be manga pages in their own right haha
