Writer / Artist Colab
« on: July 23, 2009, 10:45:56 PM »
It just hit me when I posted in the writers forum, but this would probably be a good idea.  What I have in mind is coming up with a 24 page story, just the basic story idea, not writing it... then, writers can take 3-5 pages and write that part... I'll keep control of it so, if i see one writer going in a specific direction, the next writer can get an idea where to go.

We can reach agreement on the type of story, then, with a simple outline from me, we can split it up among writers here.

Once written, we can divide the story up and let artists draw parts, again, 3-5 pages each. When finished, we'll publish it.

Just a thought, and pretty raw at this point, but what do you guys think? It's a good way to bring the writers in on some printed work for their portfolios, and good practice for artists to draw other people's stories.

An interesting idea to say the least. However, I would note that in the process of writing a 24-page story, you would be introducing a lot of prejudicial elements into the other writers stories. A better idea might be to follow the "Editor-Mangaka" model, where the editor gives the basic information and writers/artists go from there. Afterwards, the editor then fixes any errors.
Doing that, it would allow each individual person to express themselves, and it could turn out to be a great deal of fun as each person builds on top of what the previous person did.
As for publishing, I don't know what you mean by that. Publishing on this board? Sure. Getting a book published? That could easily turn into a nightmare of unprecedented horror.

I'll go with the standard phrase of "More information is needed."

No, by publishing I mean a printed book...

It couldn't work with your idea... there would be no story to hold it together. There has to be a firm guideline in the beginning, otherwise it's just a collection of short stories.

I've seen the idea work before just fine. The story wasn't the best, but it was coherent and whole. However, it seems like you've given more thought to your plan, so maybe it would be wiser to go ahead with that.

If you figure out a premise and some more details on how this would be done, I'll be glad to give it a whack.

The original idea is great but maybe we should end our current collaboration project before starting a new one.

Well, I figured it would take 2 months just to get the story, before any artists got involved... so, this would be a project the writers could work on while the other artist colab is going.

I can see that not many writers have posted here, well here goes.

I am, basically, a writer and love your idea. But as was said: "More information required."

Like when???

Thnx 8)

Please check the previous answers.

Tim said that this topic was first to organize the project. He will surely make a post when it will be time to take part on this. This project will truly begin once the first collaboration project has ended.

Yep, for now lets just get some writers committed... we can decide on a general idea for the story at that point. My idea is to simply break a 24-32 page book into as many sections as we have writers. Then I'll just give a general idea of what each section contains... if it's an adventure story looking for a silver key to unlock the townhall's vault where the secret scrolls are contained to be read to make the town prosper... just as an example... and we have 6 writers, and it's a 24 page story... each writer would write a 4 page section, with the only direction from me being...

1. the intro gets told and the adventurers set out.
2. The adventurers climb a mountain.
3. the adventurers face a small army of zombies.
4. The adventurers go into a cave to look for the key.
5. the adventurers find the key and are chased.
6. The adventurers return to the village with the key.

As you can see, very general instructions, meant mostly to make sure the story ends up where it's supposed to, but the writer is free to add as much as they want to fill out their 6 pages. Once completely written, we can all go over it and fix any continuity problems. Then, it can go into the artist's colab stage, again split up among the artists who want to take part.

And in the end, print published.

Ops I didn't see this one. I did made a discussion in writers section to make a Manga story for Mangaraders but for writers. Well I guess this one should go to the Anthology first. It wouldn't be a problem since my idea was to create a workshop.
