Name anime that doesn't take place in japan!

So yeah, you are trying to write a story with anime characters and feel like you can't quite capture the spirit of japan and miss important details? How you go through your memory and actually see how many stories you like take place in super foreign lands and the like?

- Bonus points for mentioning inconsistencies that you have noticed either through your own knowledge or wikipedia

- Bonus points for anime that have absolutely no japanese characters

My attempt: Cowboy Bebop!

Earth doesn't even really appear in the story. 'Foreign' Names all round. Legendary anime on the basis of great musical score and story telling alone.

I'll give you that, but I think the more interesting question: what's an anime that takes place in an honest to God modern day country that's not Japan?

Bebop can take place anywhere without changing a thing. But it comes down to what I've said for years: write what you know. Anime is set in Japan because that's where the people who make it are from. They know better than to try and set a show in Argentina, because they don't know enough about Argentina to accurately portray it.

I agree totally but...

Michiko to hatchin.

I think the writers' knew a little about Brazil at least, but otherwise I do think that anything is writeable, even if it's beyond your field of experience.

And anime definitely ignores that rule several times. Heck, western media too when it can.

My next anime: Trigun.

I dare you to find someone with Stampede as their family name haha.

Not saying it can't be done, just saying it shouldn't be attempted unless you know your stuff backwards and front.

But did MTH actually take place in Brazil? I recall it actually being "I Can't Believe It's Not Brazil"

Just checked, 'Diamandra' is the name of the place, but it's definetly south america and done pretty legit methinks.

I think it'd be a great pity if it isn't attempted at all. There's definitely terrible lazy stuff out there, but there's room for faking it too methinks. If not then you really are bound to the place you've been born in.

I agree. Let people create what they want to create. I've never been to Japan but if I wanted to set a manga there I would do so.

Maria the virgin witch takes place in France, so that show i guess? My friend loves baccano, and i dont think it's set in japan either. Has a very western vibe to it. I don't think Maria has japanese characters?

The original FMA was basically alternative reality germany, and in the movie(?) they go to actual Germany during ww2. There's more i can think of, but yee.
