Location and characters

For your story if it in real world Do you think it should happen in Japan and characters should be Japanese ? Or you would make it happen somewhere else than Japan ? I just ask this because most Manga take Japan as location so whats your preference ?

I mostly like charracters with different locations to be on the same manga. Well coz different reople of different locations have different characteristics, beauty, culture and stuff like that.

I dont have any problem with drawing characters from different locations, or even from different time-lines!

Hmm those characters  look like from old style Manga from 80's and 70's but still thats a great resource !

Story might happen in few different locations but still there has to be a main location. You would pick Japan for that or somewhere else ?

its all up to you really. of course you cant just use any character design (for me at least) for instance i wont give someone with blond hair and blue eyes a japanese name.

I think for the most part, your characters for original manga/comics should be located in places you're familiar with. I know I usually really hate reading western manga set in Japan with Japanese characters because you just know that the creator learned everything he knows about Japan from reading manga and anime... so, the setting isn't authentic, it's borrowed/stolen from other manga and anime.

But, a Japanese character in America (or wherever you're from) is perfectly fine, or Americans (or whatever nationality you happen to be) visiting Japan is fine. One of the X-men series a couple years ago had a cute Japanese girl in it, I remember, and she was a great character. And the X-men have also had book issues taking place in Japan. But, overall, you should stick to what you know.

the exception would be in fantasy type stories... where you can pretty much invent the world you're writing about... post-apocalyptic worlds might have all schoolgirls walking around in sailor suits and carrying katana.... but westerners drawing contemporary manga with Japanese schoolgirls in it... don't do that :-)

Yep, I most enjoy the completely created fantasy world where I can blend all sorts of civilizations, even ones that have never existed... I think you can be most creative in those scenarios. My current project is steampunk, so I'm blending 19th century England with all sorts of 'what if' post apocalyptic worlds, including Japanese

Well even if you have just visited Japan few times I don't think you would able to get their real essence of their culture and day to day life. ( now things getting westernized so its become less hard). Asian cultures like Japanese are bit complicated So a story which perfectly find to us might be ridicules to a Japanese guy.

Not only Japanese, all asian cultures are complicated: TRust me I know (I live here). You guys better steer clear of here unless you are from asia, or a master "historisian" and "culturologist" (Just made them up)

you do have a point though. outsiders really shouldnt write about a place unless they have put in some major research. this works both ways though. japanese writers shouldnt be writing about america without a crap load of research.

Yeah, the Japanese always get America completely wrong... it's actually kinda funny how they see us, but I'm sure a lot of people hate them for it (blacks, Chinese, etc), but they usually stereotype everyone except themselves.
