PAGE 184

PANEL 1 : LEAH STANDING IN FRONT OF A CHALKBOARD THAT HAS SCHOOL AND NONSENSE WRITTEN ON IT.

            LEAH
         (SPEECH)
Alright class, today’s lesson will be the three separate phases of the Soul: Placebo, Fallen Angel, and Demented.

PANEL 2 – 4 : LEAH TURNS TO THE BOARD AND SIGHS AS SHE SEES THERE’S NO ROOM FOR HER.

PANEL 5 – 6 : LEAH INSTEAD PULLS DOWN THE PROTECTOR SCREEN.

PAGE 185

PANEL 1 : LEAH ONCE AGAIN STANDS IN FRONT OF THE SCREEN WITH THE SCREEN DISPLAYING A SOUL (LABELED “Placebo”) DESCENDING DOWN A BRANCH THAT SPECTRUM OUT. ONE END LABELED “Fallen Angel” AND THE OTHER END LABELED “Demented”.

                                LEAH
         (SPEECH)
Let’s first discuss the key difference that separates Placebos from the other two.

PANEL 2 : A CLOSER VIEW OF THE PICTURE ON THE SCREEN.

            LEAH
         (SPEECH)
Assume the spectrum is the array of power one has when a Fallen Angel or Demented. Every single person’s spectrum shares both quality with each individual’s moral deciding to favor one side or the other.

PANEL 3 : A CROWD OF EVERYDAY PEOPLE.

            LEAH
         (OFF-PAGE)
Most of the population are Placebos, meaning they haven’t unlocked this power. So their spectrum is compressed.

PANEL 4 – 5 : ONE PANEL TO SHOWING A FALLEN ANGEL AND ONE TO SHOWING A DEMENTED.

            LEAH
         (OFF-PAGE)
But once this power is unlocked, the capabilities are nearly endless.

PANEL 6 : CLOSE UP SPECTRUM.

            LEAH
         (OFF-PAGE)
Just like a spectrum, if one is morally more a Fallen Angel than a Demented. They can use their powers in a certain way that a Demented cannot and vice versa.

PAGE 186

PANEL 1 : VIEW BACK TO LEAH.

            LEAH
         (SPEECH)
It’s important to remember that these powers aren’t permanent. Get caught in Death’s Shadow, and your Soul resets. – this ultimately means that the power resets too!

PANEL 2 – 4 : VIEW FROM THE BACK OF THE CLASS. SHADOWED OUTLINE OF STUDENTS, A COUPLE RAISING THEIR HAND.

            STUDENTS
         (SPEECH)
         What about these Universal Laws?
         -
Or how does one unlock these powers?

PAGE 187

PANEL 1 : CLOSE UP OF LEAH IN A TEASING LOOK.

            LEAH
         (SPEECH)
Then stick around for another lesson!

               DETECTIVE 1
            (SPEECH)
God damn dude. This is just something else.

PANEL 2 : A closer view of DETECTIVE 2 deep in thought with his finger wrapped around his chin. His partner continues.

               DETECTIVE 1
            (OFF-PAGE)
I mean, I’ve heard of rage, but this is just complete mutilation.

PANEL 3 : A view behind DETECTIVE 1, his partner looks down at the floor.

PANEL 4 – 5 : The same view, DETECTIVE 2 looks in the direction of the doorway, then looks back at DETECTIVE 1.

               DETECTIVE 1
            (SPEECH)
I need to make a phone call.

PAGE 4

PANEL 1 : DETECTIVE 2 walks away as his partner looks on confused.

               DETECTIVE 1
            (SPEECH)
            Hey, were you even listening?

               DETECTIVE 2
            (SPEECH)
            No, not really.

PANEL 2 – 3 : Exterior of the house, DETECTIVE 2 is walking out and searching through his phone.

            It’s me
                                –
This kid did a number on the mom, but from the look of it, he chased the girl out into a nearby alleyway.
                                -
Only problem now is that both went missing that night as well, so I’m with no leads.
                                -
Some kid, small-timer, name is Evan Blackburn.
                                -
Yeah, no one’s claimed him either. So, either he’s rouge, or there’s an unknown party at work.
                                -
                                I will, sir. Thank you.

PAGE 6

PANEL 1 – 3 : On the other end of the call, the man hangs up and puts his phone away. An UNSEEN BYSTANDER accompanies him.

               UNSEEN BYSTANDER

            Anything sir?

PANEL 4 : View pointing at the man who is LUCIFER.

PANEL 4 : Paxton appears behind her.

            PAXON/GRIM

         Yo.

PANEL 5 – 6 : Mia jumps from being startled, breaking her device as it hits the ground.

         Bummer.

            MIA
         (SPEECH)
You seriously need to quit doing that...

PANEL 2 – 6 : Paxton freezes time and loops it back to before, positioning himself to catch her device.

PAGE 10

PANEL 1 - 5 : As the old version of them repeats, Paxton catches her device.

            MIA
         (SPEECH)
         You seriously need to...

            PAXTON/GRIM
         (SPEECH)
Quit doing that – I know.

PANEL 6 – 7 : Mia looks greatly displeased , Paxton looks indifferent.

            MIA
         (SPEECH)
How many times have you done this already?

            PAXTON/GRIM
         (SPEECH)
         I don’t know – seven... eight times.

PAGE 11

PANEL 1 – 2 : Mia waves him off, frustrated by his actions.

            MIA
         (SPEECH)
         Well, what do you want?

PANEL 3 : She points at him in disappointment.

            MIA
         (SPEECH)
Shouldn’t you be at school right now?

PANEL 4 : Paxton shrugs her off.

            PAXTON/GRIM
         (SPEECH)
I’mma Lord of Death, school seems pretty trivial.

PAGE 12

PANEL 1 : Dynamic view of Paxton.

            PAXTON/GRIM
         (SPEECH)
Besides, your little group of friends are currently being investigated at school, seeing that your still technically “missing”.
         -
Since it’ll be awhile before they return – give or take a few days – I figured it would be a perfect time for us to bond a little over some lessons.

PAGE 13

PANEL 1 : Mia’s thoughts on him teaching aren’t too pleasing.

PANEL 2 : View of her thoughts of him with a tie and nice clothes (the whole panel X’ed out).

PANEL 3 : View back to Mia sitting on the floor.

               MIA
            (SPEECH)
Ha. I highly doubt your “teaching” abilities.

PANEL 4 : View of Paxton with a sarcastic, smug look.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
That’s fine – I rather you rot away in this sketchy-ass building anyways.

PANEL 5 – 6 : Paxton begins to walk away but Mia stops him because she is curious to what he means. He turns back to her with the same look as before.

               MIA
            (SPEECH)
Wait, wait, wait. What exactly are you going to teach me?

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
Nothing too fancy... just a way to go undetected out in the real world.

PAGE 14

PANEL 1 – 2 : Sudden temptation takes over Mia as the thought of being able to leave the hideout peaked her interest.

   PANEL 3 – 4 : She grabs a hold of Paxton.

               MIA
            (SPEECH)
This better not be a joke.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
Now why would I do something like that?

PANEL 5 : Side view of them. Mia growls in anger as Paxton continues.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
Even better, I’m going to show you what I mean when I say, “the Shadow of Death”.

PAGE 15 / PAGE 16

PANEL 1 : View of the room they are in. Normal settings as Paxton and Mia sit down in front of one another.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
Now I’m only going to show you a sliver of it.

PAGE 17 / PAGE 18

PANEL 1 : The same view but Paxton is gone and all around Mia are disturbing images of Paxton’s “shadow”, torturing her and tormenting her. (this being the Grim Reaper itself).

PAGE 19

PANEL 1 - 3 : Mia gasps in pure terror at the sight of it. She jumps back but only to see that whatever nightmare she was a part of, had disappeared.

               MIA
            (SPEECH)
Wh... What... What the hell was that?

PANEL 4 : Paxton appears to enjoy her moment of fear as he laughs her off and explains.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
Ha, ha, ha. I told my dear – it’s the Shadow of Death.

PANEL 5 – 6 : Both of them go back and forth.

               MIA
            (SPEECH)
That much I got, I mean what is it exactly?

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
Never really thought about it before. I guess if I had to put a label to it – I would say it’s an essence... like a force of nature.

PAGE 20

PANEL 1 – 2 : Paxton gets up and directs Mia to follow.

PANEL 3 – 5 : The two stand in the center of the room. Paxton discusses the first steps.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
Stand still and focus around my body.

PAGE 21

PANEL 1 : Profile of Mia.

PANEL 2 – 4 : Views of Paxton with more detail than the one before, slowly exposing the Reaper behind him.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
            Do you see it?

               MIA
            (SPEECH)
            Yeah, barely.

PAGE 22

PANEL 1 – 3 : Three views of Paxton from right, center, and left. The right-angled view shows him and the reaper. The center view shows the reaper behind Paxton (giving his figure and aura like outline). The left shows the reaper is gone.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
With enough control, I’m able to hide it

                                (THOUGHT)
                                but...

PANEL 4 : Strip panel of Paxton’s eyes.

PAGE 23

PANEL 1 : Dynamic view of Mia with her version of the grim reaper behind her. In comparison to Paxton’s, Mia’s is greatly intensified.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR

Alright – listen to me cause this is really important.

PAGE 24

PANEL 1 – 2 : Two profile views of a young Paxton and his predecessor. A woman who would appeared a couple years older. She wears a hood over her head with a mask representing the culture of the setting. The setting is of an ancient civilization.

PANEL 1 – 4 : His predecessor sits him in a mediation pose and explains what he has to do to control his shadow.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
Stay just like that and relax.
            -
Now close your eyes and try to envision the room we’re in as if you can physically see it.

PANEL 5 : Side view of Paxton with his eyes close.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
Once you feel like you see it – open your eyes.

PANEL 6 : Same view but with his eyes opening.

PAGE 26 / PAGE 27

PANEL 1 : Paxton sees the room from a different position then he was before. He can see his predecessor standing by his physical body.

PAGE 28

PANEL 1 - 5 : Paxton’s predecessor discusses that Paxton must give her a sign by touch for her to know he did it right. Paxton gets a naughty idea and grabs her boobs. Though his predecessor can’t see him, she feels him groping her. Embarrassed and mad, she grinds her teeth in anger before punching his head.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
If you did it right, you should see me and your body in the room with you. I can only see your physical body, so for me to know if you did it right – I need to feel your presence. A simple touch will do.

            AFTER HE GRABS HER

                                (SPEECH)

PANEL 1 : Paxton’s predecessor awaits for him once again but this time with her arms crossed so he can’t do the same thing again.

PANEL 2 : A close up of her arm with Paxton tapping it.

PANEL 3 : Front view of his predecessor.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
Good. Now mirror yourself almost exactly. I need to tell you something important first.

PAGE 30

PANEL 1 : Angled dynamic view of his predecessor.

               PAXTON’s PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
You’ll essentially be playing rounds of question and answer with Death itself. When you’re ready to begin, you’ll exactly mirror yourself – allowing for a connection between the both of you.

PAGE 31

PANEL 1 : A mirrored view of last panel.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
Understand this – if you answer incorrectly or if Death ends the conversation and breaks the connection, you’ll experience a side effect known as EgoDeath.
                                -
It’s a state of consciousness where you lose all sense of identity. Your mind will go insane to the point it will create a complete new reality within itself.

PAGE 32

PANEL 1 : Side view of Paxton.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
Every minute in this world feels like a year there. You can live lifetimes in the matter of a day. But your mind will greatly age as your will not. If or when you do realize the illusion and come back to this world, your soul will have paid a heavy price.

PANEL 2 : Mirrored view of last panel.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
You will experience these multiple times if you plan on controlling your shadow. So make sure you get back sooner rather than later.

PANEL 3 – 6 : Paxton syncs with himself and follows the movements of his physical body as it slowly adjusted itself into position for an Ouija board. As they set up, in the world Paxton is in – an elaborate game board appears in front of them. Paxton’s predecessor explains as everything goes.

               PAXTON’S PREDECESSOR
            (SPEECH)
When you sync with your physical body, it will become a medium for Death and it will take control of your body. Follow the movements exactly until you see board appear.
                                -
You must start the conversation simply by sliding the view-plate over to it.

PAGE 33

   PANEL 1 – 2 : Paxton’s predecessor watches Paxton’s physical body begin to move.

PANEL 3 : top down view of the board. Both versions of Paxton have their hands on the view-plate, the view-plate sits on the word “Hello”.

PANEL 4 : Multiple small close-up views of the letters that spell out the sentence – “Are you afraid to die?”.

PAGE 34

PANEL 1 – 4 : Mia’s physical body begins to fall back, lifeless when it hits the ground.

   PANEL 5 – 6 : Paxton starts a timer and sits down.

               PAXTON/GRIM
            (SPEECH)
Alright girlie – time to see if you prove me wrong.

PAGE 35

PANEL 1 : Top down view of Mia on the floor.

PANEL 1 - 3 : Side view of her face when her eyes closed. She opens them to see she’s back in her room.

I’m back in my room? Was that all just a dream?

PANEL 4 – 6 : She sits up on her bed and rubs her eye. Her mom’s voice is hear from downstairs.

               MIA’S MOM

Mia! Are you up? You’ll be late for school if you sleep any longer!

PANEL 7 : Mia’s hair hangs over her face and a tear is seen running down her face.

Phew well I wish I had the usual time I did to give a step by step review but I had to skim, so I'll be mentioning things off the top of my head.

My first ever concept was for reapers and the like inspired by Bleach. At the time I felt a bit ashamed of it but I learnt - along with seeing this now - that it's a concept that's so rich for storytelling there's lots of opportunities for unique spins on the idea.

I feel though that after the mothers' death Mia not reacting to her demise in a proper emotional manner and rather settling for being angry, attacking, being played around with by Paxton and then basically sitting in for some lessons in being a Reaper took away from that sense of 'My normal life is totally upturned right now and my friends are strange supernatural fighters?' A bit.

Other than that though pretty cool concepts here! Love the Universal Laws of Existence theme, and the character powers are really cool. Love time freezing and teleportation and all that jazz. The last chapter explaining Ego Death was particularly interesting too.

I felt a little lost in the flashback. Was it that Mia has been living for thousands of years and lost her memories before the mordern day? Was she already fated to be a Grim? Why does she have to off Paxton instead of just inherit the powers?

Thanks for the comments! It's nice to get some feedback on this one. To be honest, this idea was really hard to get going at first. The topic was so broad, I wasn't sure how I wanted to proceed with it for a while.

As for the reaction to the Mom's death, you're right - she doesn't react in a realistic way. I think I was more worried about getting a basic back story of Grace and Mia going and getting all the major characters developed but I do plan to touch on it kind of heavily here in the next couple of chapters to come. Also with the flashback, I feel like it would be a bit easier to follow once it's drawn and you can actually see a switch between Paxton/Mia and Paxton/his Predecessor. Maybe I'm a little hopeful on it - I'll probably mark it as a flashback like I did with an earlier one so people know.

I'm glad you like the concepts of this story otherwise, I've really enjoyed writing this one now that I have it together. Again, I always welcome feedback - it let's me know that I'm developing a good story!
