Analyzing characters
« on: October 02, 2017, 05:14:38 PM »
General writing question here how do you guys separate characters through personality and traits ? I feel understanding how characters are from their Ins and outs will help when creating your own characters. For example take a character you really love have you ever not really known why you loved them so much? Why the character themselves means so much to you? maybe It's their backstory or a part of their personality you just can't pin point but you greatly love them for it.

Any advice would be a big help.

As always, it's complicated. The reason you'll like a character, like the reason you like a friend, isn't just one reason. It's a whole mix of them, interacting uniquely to form a whole. Then it comes to your own thoughts and biases, as a filter. Only then do you like or dislike a character.

To get a start though. Try listing out character traits as they come to mind. Don't think about it as you write them, and don't restrict yourself to traditional 'traits'. Maybe a character is 'orange' y'know? Think of it like a game of word association. See where it takes you.
