Opinions on artwork?
« on: July 17, 2017, 09:06:57 PM »
Just want an opinion from the artists in here; do you prefer manga in color or black and white? I'm writing a manga and my artist and I want opinion on whether to go traditional black and white, or if we should use color. If most people prefer black and white, there's no sense in spending extra costs in coloring utensils. Thanks! :)

From my experience with others, properly colored manga is usually preferred. However, if it's only roughly colored, it's better off as B&W (IE Dragon Ball books <<The only manga I read>> looks disgusting with color)

If you are good at coloring, do a colored page. Black and white isnt that bad really.

Well, it depend on the coloring style. Are you going to do lineart with sample colors
or full on paintings.

Hi~

I usually go B&W because I do not know how to handle colors~

if it is for a manga, I would suggest B&W because it is less tiring than coloring.

I think it should be mostly decided on your preferences tho.

Webtoons are your best bet if you want to see what coloured looks like. I prefer black and white, but you can't get over how people love colour, and how easier it is to show light and explosions in the coloured medium than black and white.

The choice is yours, in the end. You could also consider graphite. Look at Sword of The Stranger to see what I mean. It's possible to have a really good manga drawn in a sort of pencil style rather than the extremes of black or white.

I I like both, but I prefer color. I'd maybe think about which one better fits the themes/atmosphere of the story? You could even mix and match, and make the most important parts of the story in color, or something. ^^

Coloring is much more of a challenge than B&W but it doesn't mean that B&W is an easy thing to do.
First of all in case of B&W you need to know how the effect of 'negative space' works [Google this phrase and you'll know what I mean :)]. Sometimes with just blacks and whites you can do wonders and with a bigger impact on the reader than with colors.
Check out some manga pages and sometimes you'll see that screentones imitating grays aren't used so often. You can also imitate the depth of shadows by using cross hatching.

But it's up to you to choose. Good luck :).

personally i prefer black and white, perhaps because you use textures and different types of shading and hatching to show colours and stuff, and that makes it a bit more stylized than a coloured page which loses some of that expression i think. impact, thats the word.
but coloured isnt bad in itself and i read both if the story is good :P

when i draw though i prefer colour P

Color forces you to focus on the background more.

A colored character doesn't fit well in front of a plain white background in comparison to a black and white character.
