Interesting enough, I feel it's only Naruto who fits that description of being a complete weakling to the T. Of course all the others had to power up against overwhelming odds, but Ichigo was already strong and it felt more like a discovery of new abilities rather than being ridiculed by society. Goku just powers up through his adventures... It took the timeskip for Luffy to actually need to take a step back to become stronger.

But yeah, that's it. Relatability is the base of any good protagonist. You can twist the troupe of course, but there's got to be some form of common sentiment with the lead characters in a story or else it'd just be boring. Light Yagami is a total douche, but you relate with his idea of being a vigilante like that despite your own convictions.
