Graveyard Play

Hello, this is a new story that I've been working on. I might stick with it, but then again I might not. I guess it all depends on whether it's interestingly unique enough. Please enjoy. I intend to make it a shorter story unlike Honey, Stalin Took the Kids

Graveyard Play: The power of the reanimated dead--By Coldmiser8675

Part 1:

Spoiler
Moonside High school, a place for young growth. Where kids socialize, learn, and have fun. For a girl named Sai however, there’s nothing fun about it, nor is it really a place for socializing. Ever since freshman year she has been somewhat of a loner, simply because she felt like everyone around her just didn’t meet with her tastes...or even more simply, she just didn’t like any of theirs.

The beautiful girl walks along the school hallway, observing fellow students chatting with one another. Glancing to her right, a group of girls are giggling by their lockers in gym uniforms, obviously sharing the current gossip of who’s dating who. Judging by the uniforms, they must be getting ready for Track practice, Sai thought. She turns to her left, and glances at a bunch of boys in sports jackets, holding basketballs, laughing. Throughout her walk, and after seeing so many bundles of students, she realized that everyone out here is going to their after school activities.

Everyone except her.

She walked down further into the hall, past more lockers and students. Groups of kids she recognized as members of the Math Club, Physics Club, National Honors Society, are all by the classroom doors, waiting for their club to start. She looks forward, still walking, catching a glimpse of a short girl with curly hair and glasses coming towards her.

Sai stops walking, recognizing her immediately. Clou.

Clou: Sai!

Her voice is soft even though she appeared to have tried shouting her name. Sai gives off a slight smile at how quiet the voice was. Typical Clou.

Sai: Hello, Clou.

Sai tries her best to put up a friendly smile. It appeared to have worked as Clou reacts with a smile of her own.

Clou: Have you come down to sign up for the Chess Club yet?  We’re always looking for new members.

Sai: Ah, no, I’m sorry, I’m actually taking a detour out of here. A student seems to have thrown up at the entrance of the school, so I’m heading out the back.

Clou: Oh.

Sai can see the sad expression in her eyes, her face cast down, disappointed.

Sai: I-I’m sorry. I’ll think about it! I just need to think it over. Joining a club is a big decision, you know?

Clou brightens up.

Clou: You’re right, it is a big decision.

Suddenly a voice from one of the classrooms calls out,

Student: Clou! We’re doing attendance!

Clou turns her head towards the voice.

Clou: Alright, I’m coming!

She turns back to Sai.

Clou: Promise you’ll figure it out as soon as possible? It’d be really fun to have you!

Sai flushes slightly.

Sai: Of course, you can count on it. (She gives Clou a smile of reassurance.)

With a smile and a wave, Clou turns and rushes away into the classroom, leaving Sai ultimately alone in the hallway. The afterschool classes had begun, and she was the only one out here. She walks to the back door exit, pushes through the heavy door, and at once gets blanketed by the evening sun. She stops and shields her eyes from the glare with her hand. Squinting, she scans the sidewalk path towards the front of the school building. She’s never been through this side of the school before. Spotting her path, she continues onward. She gets relief from the bright sun as she goes by the garden club’s tool shed, enveloping her in a small patch of shade. From there, she casually walked through thick green trees and  small patches of colorful flowers. She took advantage of the opportunity to catch a clear eye-full of the kept greenery of the Garden Club, and was quite dumbstruck with its beauty.

She turns her attention back to her front, pleased from the sight she took in. It was very beautiful. She goes into a sudden thought; what if she joined the garden club? She wasn’t into plants, but they were very beautiful to look at. She also recognized some of the students that joined too.

She shook her head. She didn’t want to go into all the work of planting them. Too boring. Besides, she couldn’t do something like joining the Garden Club before telling Clou about her opinion of the...dreaded chess club.

Sai shivers. The chess club. She remembered somewhat of attending a summer camp on one rainy summer day, and all they did was play chess...All. Day. She was already bored to tears during her first game, and the rest of the day turned into torture. If she couldn’t even handle five minutes of playing chess without losing herself, how could she take on two hours? Everyday?

Sai lets out grieving sigh. She already thought about the chess club, and put a big fat ‘no’ on the subject, but she just couldn’t bring herself to tell Clou that. She’s been really nice to her in class, and they’ve always been working together on projects. What if she told Clou her opinion of the chess club, and she got upset? It would mean goodbye to her only friend.

She was getting sick of being alone after school, not hanging around with anyone. She didn’t want another summer of just keeping to herself. Maybe she should just force herself to join the chess club.

Another shiver.

No, maybe she could make new friends in another club, such as the track club? No, she already decided on that. She hated all the school sports. They’re all pointless. No meaning whatsoever. Man, she just can’t make up her mind. She rejected art, writing, music, all no and no. She even rejected baking.

She stops in her tracks, eyes freezing on a lean figure standing against the tall flag pole. His pale skin, spiky white hair, loose suit jacket and tie are all too familiar to her. It’s that creeper kid in her physics class. What’s his name? She can’t remember, even though the teacher has called him for attendance dozens of times. How could she forget? Every time his name was called, there was an answer of a soft murmur, so eerie and bone chilling it’s as if a zombie had responded.

She makes a quick pace around him, trying to avert his gaze. She’d heard rumors. Rumors of him heading off into the town cemetery and doing who knows what. He’d always go there, someone had said. Sai’s been told that the creeper kid heads over after school, and there he’d meet up with other creeper kids, all from different schools. Some say grave robbing, others say voodoo. The point is, he’s looked at as super creepy.

It was after school now, and the recollection of these rumors had now intrigued her. The person who started the rumor had only followed him to the entrance of the graveyard, but what about inside the graveyard? She stopped in her tracks. She was now by the front doors of the school. Peering in through the window she could still make out the yellow tape covering the floor around the puke zone, the outside knob also wrapped in tape as a warning sign. She casually shifted her gaze towards the flagpole, sure enough, he was still standing there, lifeless. His white face gazing at the street. For a creeper, he was quite handsome with his High cheekbones and glittering eyes. However, they were overshadowed by the deprived characteristics of a corpse.

After five minutes of standing idly, he started to depart from the pole, walk across the vast greenery of the school, and travel down the street. Sai took her leave, keeping herself a good distance away, trying to look casual as she trotted past the flagpole and onto the greenery. She could still make out the pale figure in his contrasting dark suit jacket, now a hundred yards away at least.

She followed him down the street, which started making winding turns and went out past empty cornfields. Her surprise at how foreign this all is had made her realize that she never really explored this way from school before. She had always taken the right side from the school, since of course, that was where she lived. Now that she was going somewhere opposite to her house, she’d better text her parents and tell them she won’t be home for a while, make sure they don’t worry. Immediately, she came up with a great lie, and finished typing the message on her phone.

Looking into the chess club today, won’t be home till late

--Sai

Snickering at the message, she tapped the send button,  then put the phone back into her pocket. She looked ahead, and noticed that the creeper kid was gaining distance. For a deprived looking person, he sure was fast. She picked up her speed, and continued on, closing the gap slightly.

Finally, after another cornfield, she spotted the town graveyard ahead. It was vast, with tombstones littering almost every inch. The black spiked gate, about ten feet high, expanded for a good dozen yards, before breaking into an entrance. There, she saw the creeper kid take a sharp turn into the yard, then he disappeared from her sight.

There were no other kids he was waiting for, Sai pointed out to herself. But that just made this kid even creepier. The evening sun is beginning to set already, and since they’re in the middle of October, night is sure to make an appearance very soon. She’d better make this quick, for she would not enjoy walking back in the dark.

She casually trotted into the Graveyard, and found herself in sudden surprise at the sight of fog. It covered nearly the entire cemetery, save for a few headstones at the entrance not too far from her feet. This is quite terrifying, since she didn’t see any fog on her way here. Maybe she should go back…

She heard movement beyond in the mist. Could it be him? The creeper kid? Had he known all along that she was following him? The movement died away, the sound of retreating footsteps. Sai is frozen at the entrance, now in thought. He wouldn’t run away if he saw her, so he must have just run past her. He can’t see anything in the fog either…

Of course, this is all just her guessing. She’s still intrigued, and the sun is still up despite being bounced off by the engulfing fog ahead. She takes a deep breath, and by force of will, she steps further into the cemetery, into the thick fog. What she’s doing is stupid, and it could be most likely that this kid is some maniac pervert. Well, you know what they say, curiosity killed the cat…

A few further steps into the fog-filled cemetery, and she cannot even see the way she came. She swallowed, kept her head facing forward, and took more steps. Her heart is thumping, her body quivering. Her brain is starting to give her hysterical ideas, that maybe this is all just a trap…

She keeps walking and walking, going around numerous headstones. She’s not even trying to be hidden now, the fog is so thick. She has no idea if the sun is still up or not, and is too terrified to turn around and find out if she can find her way out.

A moan escapes from beyond.

Sai stops dead on her feet. The sound was so soft, and so overpowered by the blood pumping in her ears that maybe it was just in her head. She slowly, very slowly, takes two more steps. If she stops moving for a while, her body would eventually not let her move at all.

Another moan, this time, it went through her eardrums clearly. Sai can feel her heart thumping hard in her throat now. This is usually when people turn around...But she keeps going. Now, the fear, has somewhat spiked the interest. For some reason, she’s getting excited at the risk she’s taking, how whatever's beyond in that neverending mist could be life threatening to her. It’s fueling her up with energy.

Then she realized that something had lounged at her from the corner of her eye.

By then it was too late. She fell to the ground, the figure on top of her. Her anxiety had given her all the energy to struggle and fight back, and she’s trying with all her might to free herself. But it’s no use, the figure is very strong, and hasn’t even lifted slightly off her. She struggles, twisting her body this way and that, scratching, clawing, punching. Then the figure had lowered its face to her, still on top of her, pinning her arms. Sai gasped in pure horror; the face was a mucus green, swollen, phlegm and foam pouring from the mouth. The eyes were fixed as one looking up, the other down, both a decayed gray. It opened the mouth wider, showing sharp, yellow teeth. By God, it was going to bite her throat.

Sai looked to her her pressed arms, only seeing the thick green flesh pinning them. She was buried in the fog. She used her last efforts to kick and scream, and the monster only retaliated by going in for the kill. Teeth diving right towards the neck.

Then that face was gone, replaced by dark crimson blood, oozing all over her face. She felt the body on top of her go limp, and she immediately pushed it off with a scream. She was safe, but, what happened?

She scrambles to a sitting position, tucking her knees to her chest. There, in front of her, she saw a familiar figure in the fog. She could see the black suit jacket, the spiky white hair. It was him, the creeper kid. He turned to her, holding some kind of double edged scythe, one of its blades stained with black blood. His pale eyes looked into hers, his thin face turned dark.

Creeper Kid: What are you doing here? Take cover!

His voice was so stern, so serious, Sai couldn’t even move. Suddenly, the creeper kid turned his head, then stepped to the side swiftly, making way for a dark figure running through. The figure turned, went after the kid, clawing the air. Then it leapt at him. The creeper kid, as if anticipating it,  swiftly avoided the attack and with one spin of his body and swipe of his scythe, cut a large gash in the back of the figures neck, decapitating it immediately. His movement was impressive.

Sai could not believe what she was seeing. He’s...fighting zombies?!

Two more appear on both sides of him, charging fast. For the undead, they were extremely quick, hurdling towards him like wolves.

Sai: Look out!

The creeper kid looked briefly to his left and right, then, just in time, he jumped up into the air, leaving his two pursuers to slam right into each other. For a brief second, he disappeared into the fog, then, with a triumphant yell, he came falling down, clearing the fog as his body violently spins in midair, his double edged scythe twirling rapidly with him.

A splash of dark crimson blood.

The two attackers fall to the ground, headless. The creeper kid, now on the ground and wearing a suit jacket stained with dark blood, hurries towards her. He takes her wrist and lifts her up.

Creeper Kid: Come on.

He starts leading her further into the cemetery.

Sai: But the entrance is the other way…

Sai barely got the words out. This was such a shock to her, so unreal.

Creeper Kid: You’re already this far out. Practice had already started, so they’re everywhere. you’ll be safer at the base. It’s close by, come on.

To their luck, they managed to avoid any encounters with...with zombies. It wasn’t long at all before they reached some small medieval church beyond the fog, near bundles of headstones. The creeper kid pulled open the big bronze covered door, scanning the surroundings as he did so, then ushered her inside.

The church was quite big, and dark. Brown pews expanded all across the area, and led up towards an empty altar, coated with dust and cobwebs. A thin man, with black hair combed back, wearing a dark suit, stands up from his sitting position on the front pew. He walks towards them, his slender arms out wide. The face is familiar.

Sai: The janitor?

Sai said softly, and only she had heard herself, as the janitor, now dressed in a dark suit and tie,  speaks.

Janitor: Well, well, Mr. Kno, what did you find here?

The creeper kid, apparently named Kno, gently releases her wrist.

Kno: She’s a student, not a member in the club, teacher. She must have followed me.

Did he just call him teacher? That’s a laugh.

The janitor’s white face crunches into observation, scanning her. Then, he brightens up in recognition.

Janitor: Ah yes, I know you. You’re miss Sai, correct?

Sai nods.

Janitor: Well, I’m so happy to know that you’re interested in our afterschool program.

Sai: What?

The janitor lets out a chuckle. Kno remains motionless, observing.

Janitor: Our after school program, where kids can learn the basics of fighting the reanimated dead. In preparation for a possible apocalypse.

Sai doesn’t know what to say. What the hell is happening right now.

Janitor: You look puzzled. Why don’t you sit down and I’ll give you the synopsis.
