Original first post.
Spoiler
Hey ho.

Okay so for the first time I put together some sort of song. I played all instruments on it the best I can (when you've never really played with anyone else you gotta become the one man band), I'm not very good at drums or bass as you can tell and my lead work is questionable but the point is to capture an emotion. So most of these are first or second take, all recorded with my phone. I don't know if I'm in key, I don't know if everything is synced up, but here it is, my very first completed song...called..."Theme For Being Radical or Not". This is also the first time I played to a click. I did the first guitar track, then drums, then bass, then a second guitar track.

When I play leads I improv, so none of this was planned. I just go with what's in tha soul man. I like to play messy, thanks Ac/Dc, it's all your fault Malcolm and Angus.

Just remember, it's the first time I've done this and I literally recorded it with a phone in mostly first takes. Also my hi-hat is super broken with two large chunks missing and it won't stay closed and I don't know how to tune my drums.

Try to enjoy it!

It's certainly very...loud

But yeah, I can't really discern much of what's going on considering that the phone couldn't really let you mix it very well.
Haha signature go brr.

I mean, I recorded the tracks separate of course, I'm not so amazing that I can play 4 instruments at the exact same time.  But I am no mixer, I dunno how things work.

Not bad. Pretty rocking. I was hoping for some vocals and lyrics though.  ;)

You could follow the harmony more on the lead. Do you know what the term "triad" means and how it works?

Pretty good for the guy who can't write music. Keep up the work Manimal! You'll never be a legend if you don't keep striving ahead!

I agree with Paipis though, it would be really cool to get some vocals in there.

Thanks guys

As for vocals, I tried to come up with a melody for this but I couldn't think of anything, to me this song is just a guitar jam. The whole point was to get out the sound I hear in my head when I aimlessly solo. Hearing my leads behind a track, even if it was just me playing, is actually a confidence booster because it sounds like it was always meant to sound. I felt such electricity when I played the last track, it was like everything suddenly made sense. Even though it's not like a great tune, I am proud of something I have done for once because I got to play with a point and it worked for what I was expressing.

Triads...um...kind of but not really.

DUDE! DUUUUUUUUUDE! I always find it so cool when people make music and put up songs :)

It really sounded like you were having fun soloing there! Well done for playing with a click also, keep practicing with one to continue getting used to it and different timings and bpm's. Just be careful to keep your feel in mind though, there were a couple of instances that I felt you may have gotten swept away in the metronome's beat and stopped playing in the swing-rock feel for brief moments.

Your drums sounded fine to me tuning-wise although I dunno how you have them mic'd up.

My only gripe was your high-hat really! but that's not something you can really help at the moment...

Also might be cool now to test out songs with varying dynamics and stuff???

Man send me something to drum along to!

Ya I was being super carefully with the drums, I actually only played to the click for the first guitar, then I played drums listening to that guitar track while looking at my professional notation chart. But I was really trying to stay in time since  I haven't done something like this before. But ya I was surprised how much better everything was thanks to the click, and coming up with a tempo, plus actually writing out the chords in a proper way. I mean duh right?

Ya you saw how bad my hi-hat is! Yes I want to make more different ones for sure. There was a certain excitement with this one since it all came together okay. I can send you something to play to, I just gotta come up with more stuff now.

I'm pretty terrible at most things musical but I did enjoy that song. It's my kind of tune to listen to, vocals or not.

It did sound a bit messy to me like you said but good.

Yes NO1SY I play pretty beastly on the drums, I was playing with one broken stick actually so I had to smash the snare with the butt end, which actually gave it more power. This is a more tame performance though. It's also like the lightest I've played guitar on tape. I played the rhythm softly and wow, it sounds so much better. Since I seek my rhythm inspiration from the likes of rough and mean players like Malcolm Young, Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon I think that I need to slam to make it sound good, but there is a lot more to it then that.

Glad you enjoyed it Litt! The messy-ness was part of the vibe, the solo was just me letting loose, I literally lost myself at parts and listened back going 'whoa what". I don't even know where that came from at 2:21. It was also just mesys sounding because of the nature of the recording.

Do you have an actual mic for recording music or do you only have a phone/computer microphone available? I was just wondering. Not sure if this needs mentioning but for some reason your song reminded me of "Koi no Uta" from Tamako Market.

I have a Rock Band mic I could use...I will try that next time, I just used my phone for this and I didn't play around with positioning it all that much. "Koi no Uta", my God that episode was amazing right? Best of the show and one of my very favourite anime episodes. I can hear it in the scratchy rhythm and chords.

Triads...um...kind of but not really.
So a C chord is played like this, right?

e-0
B-1
G-0
D-2
A-3
E-x

The note on the A string is C. On the D string, the note is E. G is G. B string is C. High E-string is E. In this chord there are only 3 notes– C E G. Any combination of just those three notes forms a C triad, no matter how many of those notes there are. A major seventh chord would add B. A dominant seventh would add B-flat. This is relevant to solo-ing because the most basic way to follow the chord progression in the song is to base your solo on the notes of each chord. So if you have a C chord, you can revolve around the notes C, E, or G. An exercise you can do is to look at the chord progression of a song you like and play the triad notes over them, maybe the scales if you can identify them. Get it ingrained so it's there when you go wild and you don't have to think about it.
