Gl4cier's first noob gallery
« on: March 16, 2016, 09:49:29 PM »
Hey guys it's me the nooby. I would like to share some drawings I've sketched the past few days and would like some honest harsh critique. Don't bash me, just be honest.

This is my first attempt at drawing full body minus the hands and feet. I feel like the head is to big for the body.

those seem oddly similar :P

welcome to MR, gl4cier!

i generally dont give too detailed critiques until i see a few of your drawings, to better tell what needs improvement, but since you asked, i will give it a go :P
overall, your proportions are not very bad.
the head, as you already guessed, is indeed a little to large, but depending on your style, a 4 head height character is within the acceptable range.
considering she is wearing a jumper/sweater, i dont think her breasts would be so defined, you have drawn the lines all the way under and it makes them look unnaturally sticking out.
the character looks a little flat as there is minimal detail in the hair or clothes, next time try adding some folds in places :P
the face looks very nice and is probably the best thing of the drawing, i think the eyebrows may be a little too low though, they look more like eyelids than eyebrows :P

overall good first full body, i look forward to seeing more, and seeing your progress :P

remember to get better at drawing things (such as hands and feet) you need to practice them the most, so try not to hide their hands behind their back :P i do this a lot as well and i am still trying to get out of the habit :P

You know the problems, so you can work at it in the future. Sycra recommends iterative drawing in one of his videos. While some would disagree, I'd say 100 drawings of the same figure is better than 1 'perfect' drawing. If you keep on working on the head - say 10 of them on a page before you make a complete drawing then you can learn a lot. It's easy to forget whatever you do if you only do it once, so it's nice to give yourself small goals, sketch a little, before going on to the main drawing.

Question, do you have any story projects or characters in your head? Would be interested in knowing .

Looking forward to more Gl4cier!

i agree with working on one thing to a better level  rather than everything, especially when you are just starting out drawing.
you will get lots of secondary skills like hand/eye coordination etc no matter what you draw :P

Here is a drawing I did recently on a Wacom tablet. Please give me critiques on things I can improve on. One thing I noticed is my lines always come out really ugly and jagged/scratchy. How can I get better at drawing smoother lines?

To make better lines on the digital table... Well, there are a lot of things involved, but its not that hard, the best method is to place one finger at "ctrl" and the other one at "z", then you should make a fast, confident line, dont take to long making it or it will become jagged, but also dont make it too fast or you wont be able to control it very well, it will take a time to get the right feeling, if you make it wrong, hit the buttons and do it again, in simple words "just do the lines in a confident way".

About the head thing, you could study about the heads size of the body (a child would have 4 heads, a teen 5-6 heads and an adult 7-8 heads... Or something like that, i dont really remember anymore).

Like mr. Lego said, you could also focus on drawing separate parts of the body deeply before doing a full drawing, i first started drawing an eye, then the nose and mouth, then the head, body, and so on... as i am today i forgot most of the technics, but the feeling is printed on my body so its not like you gonna have a hard time if this ever happens to you, also you can always study everything again, and you wil learn new things as long as you keep trying to improve yourself.

I must say, your drawing table lineart skill is way better than my lineart skills.

Also, youre doing good, keep doing your drawings, and keep trying to improve yourself, your last drawing brought (or bought? Dunow) me a felling of nostalgia, i wish boruto was as good as naruto
looks like that's it, got to go...

A quick fix to good lineart is zooming in and drawing out and fixing the breaks between the lines with the eraser tool.

You can also use the pen/path tool.

Other than that I'd recommend getting comfortable with the tablet. Drawing a lot is the key to knowing how the tools feel. And I mean drawing a lot at lot. 100 drawings of a human character is a good start. They can even be stick figures if you want.

It's pretty good, you are moving in the right direction, if you keep practicing you'll be really good.

Now for the critique, on where you can do better.

1. Your proportions are a bit off, I recommend looking for head proportions to help you out. Look for Andrew Loomis book, cause I think they are under free domain.

2. Your accessories and the hair are flat, you put lots of working to give depth to your drawing by making it a 3/4 ish view but the flatness of those accessories throws it out. Remember items have texture, size and they could contour around the body.

3. Draw hands, they are daunting but as an artist we must improve on the areas that we have to display.

As for drawing in tablet is a lot of crtl + z until you make that perfect line. Draw a rough underline to help you out.

You should trust the guys above me for art advice, but let me say welcome back Gl4cier! That's some hiatus you took just to stroll back in without a word! You've really improved in your time away!

Will review stories upon request. My latest arc: http://goo.gl/KYgsfF

Well done on your sketch
Indeed, wobbly and scratchy lines come from not moving fast enough, or not having a stabiliser setting on your brush, or drawing too many short lines rather than fewer longer ones.
Everyone has already given all the advice I would offer, so all the best on your next drawing!
