Draw like your favourite Mangaka!
« on: August 26, 2015, 05:16:02 AM »
Seeing the Insane Massive Training Workshop I thought it would be neat to try to make sketches and studies on how your favourite mangaka draws their characters backgrounds and objects if there's any way to tell.

- Choose any singular characters or types or background items that catch your interest and try to break them down using stick figures, guidelines and the like to draw your own characters in said style

- Don't trace, but since you're aiming to study the artist style you can make sketches and studies based off the pages

- Just make sure to have fun and aim to be able to construct the characters from your mind. Share your progress, links and learn

I for one want to tackle Kubo's work properly. I feel sad I didn't absorb his skills through osmosis after finishing IMTW

Oh that's exactly what I meant actually. I seriously need to watch Witch Academia 2. Nice ones there Jamie!

Yeah go ahead please! I'll start mine as well. I'm not sure whether to choose old school Kubo or new school but I'll have mine up too

this is the sort of thing i've been doing a lot of lately anyway. I'll post some stuff if i ever find it :P
i usually do it when trying to draw fanart, i try and draw the character as they were originally drawn, so i don't use it for original characters much :P
interestingly , especially in manga, the character design changes slowly as the artist gets used to drawing them (or their skill increases with experience). this happened in hayate no gotoku and even gets mentioned in one of the chapters :P

You chose a truly tricky subject to study. She just draws weird haha. Nice work there!

@suuper yeah, the learning curves are obvious and yet interesting to see. I like how Oda's style rounded out. His beginning was a bit much for me to handle haha.

Here is mine! Had a great study session going through a chapter by Kubo. Haven't had such fun in a while haha.

And I just did this quick sketch trying to incorporate what I studied

It turned out so easy. I like saving 'symbols' to make drawing such stuff easier. I remember making a study of such earlier. I guess I'll return to doing it.

Yes indeed. That turned out real well actually.

Shinobu Ohtaka'S style is really interesting. Female mangaka always have quite the unique style.

Thanks, Lego! Yeah, I really love Ohtaka's style. So unique. Especially the eyes, and funnily enough, the way she draws open mouths/teeth really stands out to me. :hmm:

Here's a finished row. I'll try to do another 3 tomorrow.

Damn, I'm really trying to do something but I find it so hard to copy now. There are so many things I want to fix like giving them real noses instead of dots and more practical hair styles! I tried drawing Idol Master style but they ended up looking like skeletons!

I'll try out My Little Monster and see what happens, that's one excellent style and the characters have varying hair styles! Something that not enough manga/anime seem to have.

Haha I understand getting real anatomy knowledge in the end but man I just really want to draw the anime or manga style because I love the way it looks. I'm doing plenty of training on the background so why not just have fun with said dots and lines for noses haha. (You can always reference seinen if you want)

My Little Monster... I can't say I've actually seen that one. Looking forward to what you come up with

Ya I really like anime art, it's very appealing, but I just have a dumb mindset. When I draw I want everything to make sense, "no girl would really have silly bangs like that", "eyebrows through hair? stupid". I really don't want to think like this but I have such a stupid desire to make some things look somewhat correct (because there are things I don't do yet like lips, and my art is still far from realistic) that I end up not drawing much and creating perhaps, unappealing characters and half assed drawings.

I know I should just have fun with this, I'll try again.

You already have your own unique style going on so you don't necessarily have to draw like anime. I was just hoping you're not shooting yourself in the foot with always expecting realistic art haha.
