Spiritual Connection
« on: July 03, 2016, 01:24:04 PM »
There's been this idea floating in my head that I really want to expand into an actually plot and story but I've only the basic concept and I'm stuck there... Hopefully everyone can provide me some help with developing this idea into an actually plot!

Alright here's the idea, there's two plains of existence, the living, and the spiritual plains. Both of which exist technically on the same world just seperate from each other, however most everyone knows nothing about the Spiritual plains, as they can't see into that plain.
The spiritual plain's residence are spirits stuck to wandering earth, lost souls if you will. But each one is vengeful, upset, angry about how they're stuck, so they try to live through the people in the Living realm. These spirits vary in sizes, they vary in colors and their intelligence also greatly varies, but all of them share the same singular theme, emotions considered 'negative' to the world, so lust, anger, fear, greed, and etc.
And these spirits start out small, they cling to people feeding those negative emotions while feeding themselves, and the bigger the emotion gets, the bigger the spirit gets and the more powerful. Some spirits get so big sometimes that they'll 'bind' themselves to a location, those locations usually being (TW: Suicide) places of suicide, like railroad tracks or the tops of buildings where they'll shut and egg the people on.
'How do they interact if the living realm can't see or doesn't know about the spirit realm though?' Well I thought of that, think of it like this, you're at school and you're anxious for this big big test, your anxiety and you telling yourself you might fail is actually a spirit on your shoulder whispering those 'sweet' little nothing's. The robber at the bank has a greed spirit attached to him, fueling his actions.

I've thought some about people who can travel back and forth between these realms but I have yet to expand past 'oh they just, Y'know fight these guys' because that's definitely too broad, because they only fight the bigger ones worth fighting.
I want to figure out these people, as well as figuring out what a plot would be. That's where I'm struggling...

So you are stuck with the "good guys" concept for your story. Hmm. I will just brainstorm and connect things that probably shouldn't be connected. But who knows, you might find something you like.

You said that negative emotions run around the world, what happens to the good emotions? Do you want to create a group of "martyrs" to fight the bad guys. Martyrs are People who elevated themselves in the world of the living to transcend petty emotions which enabled them to fight for a higher cause after they died.

Since you are a bundle of anxiety, I think it might be fun to create an indifferent psychopath who is not affected by emotions as your MC or maybe just the mentor for the MC. Actually it would be better for him/her to be the Mentor so your MC has room to grow. Look up Anti-social Personality Disorder to get a better picture. not all of them are evil you know  ;)

Or... You can go the magical girl route and have them stop bad emotions from destroying the world

For plot, start small. Have your MC "see" the bad emotions abd tries to fight it. Each trial gets bigger until it is time to reveal the real cause of everything.

Anyways, that is my advice. I hope something stuck.

It feels a little like the religion of Scientology that says "Thetans" cause all the negative emotions in the world. With that in mind and the general opinion that Scientology is a silly religion, I could see this as a comedy shounen on exorcism.

Perhaps have a protagonist who can see these spirits but doesn't know all that much about them. He advertises himself as a top class exorcist (or even funnier imo, a negativity therapist) and gets paid to help out people without actually helping them long-term.

Like if a couple comes in for therapy, he can take away the negative emotions by exorcising the spirit (or just brushing it off them) but in the long term those spirits will come back because no problems have actually been solved in the couple's relationship. With that being the end result, he either makes money from regular customers or has customers coming back calling him a scam artist.

Since he only deals with small problems like that as a therapist, he gets totally unprepared when he comes across a genuinely dangerous spirit. That's when a real exorcist comes in and introduces him to the reality of the spirit world.

Unhappy with the reality of the new world he gets involved in, his fear and negativity begin to attract spirits to him, making him the "bait" for the exorcist (who I wholeheartedly agree with Forlorn should be an unfeeling psycho/sociopath ;))

There'd be the hilarity of your protagonist somehow making money from this venture but not being happy with it, especially if his mentor is doing everything to keep him as negative as possible for luring more spirits.

Negativity = Spirits = Money = Happiness = *sshole Mentor = Negativity and so on haha

How are you going to portray these spirits?  Are they considered "evil" or "disturbed", and what are their motives?  Where do these Lost Souls come from?  Human, a living organism, or are they another breed of their own?  Why do they feed off negative emotions?  What do they gain by living in the Living Realm as oppose to living in the Spirit Realm

This wouldn't be the best way to describe the existence of the Spirits and Living.  Basically, any negative emotion a person would have, is due to the cause of these evil spirits.

Some things can exist whether you believe in them or not.  Ghost, Mudman, Santa Claus, etc.  So far, I see these spirits as leeches that attach themselves onto it's prey.  Using it's victim as a host, slowly sucking away at it's life.  But it can't kill it's host, for it if it does, then it dies too.  Like a leech, it may be difficult to detect that it has attach itself onto the victim, thus a specialist would be need to be dealt with for a solution.

In order to get the story moving, first your going to need to define who and what the Spirits are, their origin of existence, history if any, and their purpose.  They are the theme, majority, and heart of the story.  You can't write a story if you don't know what it's about.  You'll need to first set a course, and have a sense of direction.  By doing so, it be'd much easier to write the story.  Then you can have it go in anyway you desire.  Whether having heroes combating evil, a protagonist's investigation, or it being the "Law of the Land".

By all means, keep this story posted.  I am intrigue to see what you come up with.
