Hello all, I just joined MR today and now I would like to post my latest drawings here hoping for some feedbacks in order to improve.

Right now I am focusing on black and white style traditional drawings using mainly water-colour and ink. I have been practicing posing, inking and shading.

The two following pics shows how my inking and shading looks like up to now, any advise for more improvement are more than welcome, the poses are referenced

The following pic is my most recent drawing without reference, I wanted to picture the same character in male and female version next to each other in order to slowly build up the difference, I think I did all I could but before finishing it, I would like to know if there is anything I could possibly change to make it better :-)

Hi Nomena.

Hmm, well.

The hair on the first one seems incredibly detailed and well done. Look at those highlights! Wow. The scale of grays looks pretty good on that hair.

I like the way you do the shadows and highlights. However, in the first picture the leg is too small, and since we can see the torso and shoulders in a frontal view, the legs should be bigger. I think you tried to show depth am I right? Like the right leg is further from the view? If that is so, then the perspective should be different, we should be able to the character from the top view, meaning no frontal view of the torso.
 So basically, bigger legs.

In the third one, the girl's anatomy looks proportional although I think the hands and wrists should be bigger.

The guy in the third one, however, seems to have a head too big in comparison with his arms and body. Also, the abdominal muscles could be a little more subtle.

Overall, it's pretty good. Some minor tweaks would these make incredible I think.

looking great , you're definitely putting some good effort into these drawings

however, you should use guidelines with the correct proportions as all of your drawings have huge heads on tiny bodies.

also, add some more meat to the guy. he has 8 packs but his arms are almost as skinny as the girl

Dr Striker > Thanks, yeah I was really going into detail on the hair there because I tried to apply theory (lol). Thanks for the tips, I was really uncomfortable with drawing the leg on the first picture, mostly because I couldn't see the reference clearly, so I guess there I tried a top view with some depth...I am gonna adjust the perspective and the pose...I'll try the frontal view as well...I'll use your advices for the third drawing as well ;D

AmanoMai > Wow! Thanks so much, that was really kind of brightening, I usually only use a ruler to measure all the body proportions but I guess I did not pay enough attention to the size of the head. I'll try to use some more guidelines in the future.

Re: Nomena's Artwork (2 page collaboration with God Usopp)
« Reply #4 on: January 30, 2015, 02:59:34 PM »
Hello guys,

This is my one week concept creation and 2 pages drawing of the manga project of God Usopp, I used two pages of his story board and tried to draw the scenes as much as I could, it's like a prelude to his story...check God Usopp's storyboard here http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,12695.msg217976.html#msg217976

Please comment my art here, but comment the story board on God Usopp's thread above

Guess I will make this sort of thing my new training exercise (check out my offer here http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,12808.0.html) ...I just used back coloured pencil to shade and reinforce the lines here ... a general remark on the storyboard is that the figures was too small and it is impossible to draw many figures that small, so I had to improvise...I noted in the 1st page that the 3rd panel is as smallest I can draw for a decent facial feature...and the God of Light standing is the smallest decent full body shoot...unless the artist draws 200% or more of a normal manga page safety zone (18X27 cm) it is quite hard to do...but asking the artist to do that kind of thing is asking for twice as much work so it's possible to be twice the price (LOL) ...

I challenged myself to do it in a week and I won  ... though I am not happy about 1 or 2 things, I am still happy about 2 or 3 things so it's a win for me ... now I am asking for your feedbacks

Character designs:

The two pages, size 109% of a normal manga page safety zone (18X27 cm)

Nomena, this is some fantastic work!  :doublethumbs:

Thank for you making those character designs too. They look sugoi~

Yeah, sorry for having that one panel with so many little people fighting.  :P That is really hard to draw. Actually I like the action scene you have for the caption "The war raged endlessly...". It's what I had in mind but I did not properly storyboard it.

Anyways everything just looks so good. Only thing is Anshu looks different from what I had imagined but I can't complain because I gave you no reference. So good job on completing your 1 week challenge and thank you!  :D

great work on the manga pages
especially the warring scene, it's un-polished but you can really feel the heat from that one

I've noticed a certain trend with the way you draw nose
you seems to draw the nose line in really heavy lines, and that makes them look kind of plastic
the nose line should be softer, and sometime skipped entirely when drawn in manga style
i would suggest something like this for front view and 3/4 side views:

God Usopp > You're welcome  ... Glad you like it

AmanoMai > Thanks for the comments...the real thing is drawn on a white paper but I don't have a scanner so I take pictures with my phone and use GIMP to increase brightness and contrast and add a fews more things...besides I used a scanner at work once but the scans of my my pencil drawings were not very good.

about the nose, I just thought that they would look more masculin if I draw the nose line  :-\ but I guess I overdid it...

otherwise, do you have any tips about how I could make them look a bit more masculin without changing their design too much?

how to turn a girl into a guy :

Spoiler

i think you've done well in that regard, actually
nothing i can give advice on since you've done pretty much everything on the picture above

just dont connect the nose line to the eyebrows, as I mentioned.
regardless of the nose's shape, the area between the nose and the eye brows is a subtle thing.

see this picture
even on such a masculine face and a very big, stand out nose, i did not connect it to the eyebrows.

Ok, it's not been a week, but I did not have to make any character design (reference given) and there was not backgrounds to draw, so am done.

If you want to participate in my game, check my thread here: http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,12808.msg218547.html#new

I drew this from 2 pages storyboard that I borrowed from danielking2210, it's about his story "The Endless Skies: The Nautilus", please discuss his story in his thread here (http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,12782.0.html)
and discuss my art here.

The first pic is page 2 of his story, I know there was smoke on the menu in the third panel and sorry for not drawing it, but from the angle I decided to draw it (from above)  I did not know where to draw the smoke  :-\

The second pic is page 3 of his story, I rearranged the panel a little bit

Overall, I thought it was quite enjoyable to draw these closed up faces  ;D ... though I thought that maybe it's a little bit slow paced but I couldn't see how to make it faster without removing the juicy suspenses. Also drawing the hair of Davin was quite time consuming because of all the strands, I always tended to draw everything smooth though he is supposed to be a rastaman ... I put some wounds and blood but looking at references online gave me the shiver so I don't know if I did these right.

This is amazing! Thank you! It's refreshing to see my storyboard as something other than stick figures   :clapping:

Drawing these is only half the battle!!!  You gotta go all the way and ink them too if you really want to improve :D

Matsui Kenshin >  ;D This is a step I called step 1 in my training I have a list of steps that I made for myself...and I usual do not mix my activities

my step 1 goal is being able to draw 20 pages of good quality sketches a week ... and then step 2 goal would be being able to ink and shade them within the same time frame.

Besides, I work traditionally and it is hard to correct something that has been inked if there is anything I should improve, and I am stingy because ink is expensive so I practice it separately with other drawings.

But yeah, thanks for the advice, I'll definitely get to it
