What do you need to draw manga?
« on: February 09, 2009, 08:12:51 PM »
So, aside from talent and/or lots of practice what do you need to draw manga?
Sure there's lots of topics on types of pens, different types of paper or drawing tablets [? what ever that is]

Anyway, could anyone put together a good list or things for a beginner?

Ohh kay well this is really a matter of personal preference. What you know how to use can make all the difference.

I use:
  'f' grade pencils
  'hb' grade pencils
  '1b to 3b' grade pencils

I don't do much on-paper inking.
Again, this is a preference thing. Some of the coolest manga i've ever seen was drawn with blue pen.

Pen tablets are device that you can hook up to your computer. They come with special pens. When you draw on the tablet, it draws onto the computer. They take lots of practice to use well.

Experiment with different mediums until you find one you're comfortable with.

Lucky Star! Yes!

simple art furnitures:
print papers (the cheapest paper you can have: easy to see through, easy to find)
a pencil: HB is ok
a eraser: the white kind of eraser
pen inking: you can begin with  a normal black pen , then you have to find the pen that will help you: everyone has a different kind of pen, for example I can't stand the pen that my friends uses etc
mine is a 0.3 Pentel Stylo JM20.

about pen tablets: you may not need it at the beginning, it's sure useful to draw or color with a pc but it's not an absolute necessity.

If I ever get the funds Id love to obtain the wacom cintiq no doubt...but..$$$$$..

I think we should make a topic to list all web art sellers. It would be great!

One of the more important things is paper size. Keep in mind, all professionals draw on 11x17 inch paper in the U.S. (Japanese paper is a little smaller, but the actual drawing area on the paper is pretty close (around 9x14). So when you see a lot of detail in pro drawings, that's the reason... it's drawn big. Luckily, most office and computer supply stores carry 11x17 in printer/copier paper now, so it's cheap.

I use a .5 Zebra mechanical pencil with HB lead. You really don't need anything else.

A white vinyl eraser, Factis makes a good one, and a Pentel Clic Eraser

I used to ink on paper, but now I ink on computer using Manga Studio. I have a cheap old tablet I've had for over 4 years now.

I color in Photoshop and Sai, and letter using Illustrator

BTW, you don't absolutely have to have a tablet to ink on computer (though it makes it easier), I just did this little sample in Sai, using just a mouse. Sai does line smoothing, lets you draw curves, lets you change line thicknesses, add pointy tails, etc.

I'm throwing out a random thought  :-\ It's pretty embarrassing for me, 'cause I don't really know anything 'bout... Yeah :Embarrassed: It's my birthday very soon, and I have absolutely no wishes... Could I wish for inking pens? And where do ya buy these? :Embarrassed: :Embarrassed: :Embarrassed: :Embarrassed: :Embarrassed:

Okay, now when I'm at it, I'm gonna let out my furious despair in one scream: ARGH! ... Now then  8)

I have the most basic one that's a little bit less than 6x4 inches. It's more than enough though. After you a few days with it, you'll start improving greatly.

well, it depends on the artist Kite.. i can't tell you which size is best for you.. Sai has the small bamboo (if i'm not mistaken) and he's doing quite well with it ;) .. i have the medium size bamboo "fun" and it's perfect for me.. so it just depends on what you want for you.. i just suggested that you ask for the "small" size b/c it's cheaper than the larger sizes..

i really want you to get one now.. so you can join the Digi Club with me, Sai and Doodles  :D
