@everyone
Thanks for all the comments and advice.  Here is an update on some of what I've been drawing
Spoiler
I still need to blend the lines behind the lightsource (portal)

This one is getting close to finished

@suupertramp
I have been trying to separate the hair strands with these sketches.  Sadly I can't show any of my traditional pieces because my phone camera is broken (I have a few pages of just drawing hair in there).
my attempts at hair

This one I drew some metal too.  I think i have the idea of how to draw it but maybe too many deep cuts in the shoulder pad?

snazzy textures!
I thought the red parts was more gem-like than metal though. maybe the red colouring threw me off a little. either way very nice looks and looks very realistic with the shading. pretty good shading technique on the blob on the right as well, actually :P
the surround for the gems (thats what I've decided they are) did indeed look metallic, perhaps that what you meant in the first place lol. I think the cuts are fine. if anything, considering its armour, you could get away with a lot more battle cuts, and even deeper, as they are not too visible at a glance anyway. for shiny metal, dont forget to use a nice light flash, or some white streaks to make it look more real. even battered metal can be quite reflective, just not smoothly.

Life's been kind of busy, I ended up leaving my part time job to join the military.

Airforce, been in for about 8 months.

I'm also hoping I can finish the line webtoons contest, it would be easy if I use sloppy lineart but i also want it to look good so I'm not sure what's going to happen there

I think what's nice about your hair studies is you're showing the parts in the hair, so it helps you keep drawing hair simpler by drawing lines that originate from there, creating nice flow. Those skills are showing and they're only going to get better!

Regarding the metal armour, I think of 3 aspects whenever rendering metal
Inherent colour: Bronze is going to have a little more brown than Gold, which has a little more yellow etc

Texture/Glossiness: Used armour has been battered, so it's more matte in appearance because the once smooth surface has been disfigured, affecting it's ability to reflect light as much.

Lighting: IMO, the most important, you can kinda ignore the other two if you render metal like metal. That is, push your darks and your lights. You'll realise your eyes are convinced something in reality is metallic/glossy/'shiny when the shadow part of the metal looks really dark compared to the area in light.

How much the difference between dark and light is depends on the material/condition, again. Definitely keep those things in mind!

Really appreciate the comments. I figured I could post my sketches that I normally don't share (probably the only place that I'll post these on).

The reason I use pen and not pencil is because it makes me draw faster and be less concerned about mistakes so I could move on since I can't erase pen

Also i do live streams now, you can watch at https://www.twitch.tv/mk_art1661

Nice  man. I'll have to catch a livestream in the future. Do you do them at particular times or anything?
