It would appear that I can. I've only done one little test lizard thing before this that I made while watching a movie. This is my first time putting clay onto an armature (wire skeleton). I haven't worked on it anymore since the picture was taken, but I was alternating between sculpting and playing Skyrim for two days so... 10ish hours, maybe less? And I use medium blend Super Sculpey polymer clay.

Also I really do recommend sculpting figures even if you don't bake them to keep (so you can reuse the clay). I've learned a lot more about anatomy by doing a couple armatures and sculpts than I have by drawing for the same ratio of work time. I guess it's because you have to learn what looks right from various angles.

Which Skyrim were you playing? I had no idea you play Robin haha.

And ah yeah that I do believe. I bought a wooden mannequin and it's really something - just an estimation of the human figure you can rotate around and observe does wonders for your drawing. I bet with sculpting its even more helpful.

Funny enough making a proper armeture is what scares me too. I'd love to see the wirefigure you made for this one if you ever make something similar again. A humanoid one would be cool too.

Sculpey polymer. I shalt google.

I was playing the special edition and doing the quests on Solstheim (P.S. I love the Elder Scrolls series).

I had posted a dragon armature a while back I believe (I'll post it again). The armature I used for the absol was very simplistic. The main wire is the spine/line of motion (though I used an extra inch or so with the head to make a support for the horn) and then I added two more wires to be each pair of legs.

The armature is simple to construct, but very important to get the proportions right before you start thinking about detailing the clay on top or else you'll have to take the clay off again to fix the wire (though it is useful to add on basic shapes of clay at some point to see if you have any wires sticking out past where you want the surface of the clay to be).

@robin I have always wondered if it would help in understanding proportions, thats good to know. great armature, looks like coat hanger wire! and well done on the toes, they look perfect :P

are you using any special sculpting tools or just random toothpicks, skewers, pens etc?

cool tip about the tin foil too.

@lego armatures can be as simple as you want, its just a base to hold everything up :)

Thanks and it's rebar tie wire I had left over from one of the art projects I had for my 3D design class. Really you should use aluminum wire since it's easier to bend/cut, it's lighter, and you don't have to worry about rust. For the tools I do have a small set, but I'd like to get a more professional set since these are very basic.

My personal title is "jackass of all trades" but that might just be me, haha.
Don't worry about how much you're a "master" of something. Like some of the others have said, you've already surpassed us in what you have created so far. No need to down yourself. Where you are now is just one step closer to where you wanna be. Art is kind of a journey like that. Maybe none of us will ever reach that goal we idealize, but the closer we get is part of the fun.
Haha signature go brr.

Well, better a jack of all than a master of one, eh? Flexibility will take you a lot farther in life.

If it doesn't work out well when you bake it, at least you'll have all these nice photographs to prove what you've accomplished! I don't see any bits that look overly thin, so I don't think any breakages will happen.

The thinnest parts are the stands of fur that hang off the scruff between the front legs.

I think I may carefully transport it to my parents house tomorrow... Somehow. The numbers on the temperature dial on my apartment's stove are worn off so that may be problematic (also I'm terrified of cooking food with a normal stove/oven too so that doesn't help).

For now I think I'll just try to figure out how long it will need cooked.

Edit: Baking some test spheres to see if it might actually work.
