How to Make Studies on The Greats?
« on: May 16, 2014, 12:08:15 PM »
Was it Zeal who said it? Anyways I've heard it a lot before, and I was interested in Rembrant, Da Vinci and some others' line and sketch work. I've collected a bunch of images, even Da Vinci's grisly ones >..> (dude drew anything.)

Anyways my idea is to simply eye-ball them and draw them out to see if they match. Is that all there is to it? I'm sure there's no huge formula needed, but how do you go about making studies on a certain master from the past? How do you reap the most benefit from making the studies?

I dont know. I hated studying for art when I was in highschool.
Made no sense to me. Really you should be looking into what you want to do and apply techniques and practices from what you learned.

The greats are just a broad way for teachers to throw at you so you can learn.
Thats just my imo but if you interested then learn a way. /Rant

Most ways to learn off an image is to look at things objectively.
Try to get into the mindset of how they set up the image, how they used their mediums.
Just simply trying to re-create it with out actually trying to understand how they got there just feels like its straight up plagiarism.
