Japanese school-life help
« on: March 16, 2014, 08:44:37 AM »
So I'm currently attempting to write a story, and I need some help. How do Japanese high-schools (and culture) work?

I know that they start the academic year in March (I think) and have the same teacher for most of their lessons, but is there anything else that's distinct about them? I hardly know how High-schools work in general because they don't exist in the UK...

Any help would be appreciated!

One thing I derive from watching Anime and Manga is that an after school club seems to be very important to Japanese students :P

Ahhh, interesting  :hmm: I assume they have similar clubs to Western countries? (Chess, Sports, Books)

I should imagine so. Probably anything you can base a club around.

though remember I think pretty much everyone here is taking their knowledge from anime, so let's assume it's fallible. if you've ever watched a western high school movie you know it's not really so much like the real thing. so it only makes sense that the japanese would do it too.

Will review stories upon request. My latest arc: http://goo.gl/KYgsfF

That's a good point  And I suppose trying to be realistic with it all is a rather big task that's bound to have mistakes  ::)

Considering we don't live there, yes it probably will have mistakes. It would take a lot of research just to learn their about school and then on top of that their customs of living. You'd have to pretty much almost go their and attend the school yourself. It's a lot of work, but it's do-able.

classes usually start in april, which depending on where the school takes place cherry blossoms bloom around march and or april. which is why some entry cerenomies have cherry blossoms blooming.

ALso in japan, there are no lockers (well not like in the US or EU) they have small lockers and are usually to store your shoes and use the other shoes appropriate for walking in (just like in a japanese home).

Hmm, right in the middle of Spring :hmm: That's an interesting setting...

Lockers I don't need to worry about, they don't have them in the UK either (At least I don't think they do)

Does anyone know if they go to school on the weekends or are they generally free?
