Manga & Anime characters / Characters That Makes You Emotional
« on: April 24, 2014, 02:54:22 PM »
I haven't seen much activity in the Manga & Anime thread, so I though I'll post a new topic ^^.

When a story doesn't grip your interest, a few well-developed characters can! What an interesting phenomenon of emotional connection human beings have with fictional characters. A character we connected with can cause us to cry from sadness or jump up with excitement .

So, what characters have you connected with that can cause you to be emotional and why?

I'll give two examples from myself:

1) Alexander Volg Zangief from Hajime no Ippo

Alexander Volg Zangief, who goes by the name Volg, is a Russian boxer who moved to Japan to work on his career in becoming a professional boxer. At first, Volg didn't enjoy boxer at all. The only reason he box was to help his sick mother get better. However, he perception of boxing changes upon fighting Ippo, the main character.

Volg has only made 4 appearance in the manga. But each of those appearance had has made a huge impact on Ippo. The reason I feel emotionally connected to Volg is because of his ambition. Volg has usually fought in enemy territory and never had an audiences cheering for him. But despite of lack of encouragement from the audiences, he presses on and usually wins.. Heck, Volg even accomplished one of his goals that Ippo and others have yet to achieve.

Volg is one of my favourite characters and I hope to see more of him in the future!

2) Nina Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist

Nina Tucker is the daughter of Shou Tucker, a Major rank State Alchemist. She lives her father and the family dog, Alexander. Nina story has a unique path that differentiating from most child characters. She plays a role in the development of Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric early in the story to a point where Edward made one of his recognizable quotes:

Spoiler
Edward Elric - "When I was certain he was going to kill me, my mind went blank, and I didn't have any hope anymore. All I could do was scream my lungs out. I felt so helpless, I couldn't even bring myself to believe someone might save me. And then you showed up Al, and I realized that if we don't take care of each other then no one else will. So I'll do anything in my power to get our bodies back, even if it means being the militaries lap dog. And we'll just have to hope our powers are good enough to help us rise above our own limits. Because we're not Gods, we're humans, tiny insignificant humans. Who couldn't even save a little girl".

As an individual who is studying Early Childhood Education, Nina story REALLY tugs on my emotional strings. For those who haven't read the manga or seen the 2 anime versions. I highly recommended you put Fullmetal Alchemist on your list to read/watch.

Manga Writer workshop / The 222 Creativity Exercise
« on: April 13, 2014, 11:22:40 PM »
This exercise is called "The 222 Creativity Exercise!" Basically, you choose one of more of the following topics below by any mean. This could be by picking numbers between 1 to 222. Whatever topics you get, you create a short story base on those topics. The short story can be a few sentences to few paragraphs, it's really up to you! If you feel like share your stories, you're more than welcome to.  ;)

What I do is roll a dice four time. I multiply the first three numbers together then add the fourth number.
For example: I roll a 2,5,3, and 2. So, 2 x 5 = 10 x 3 = 30 + 2 = 32. My number is 32. The topic with the number 32 is poems. Now I must compose a short story about poems.

Not challenging enough? Why not add multiple topics!? Are you creative enough to explain why an oboe obsessive vampire needs to stalk a pumpkin pie in the attic?

The goal for this exercise is to build creativity and ideas to connect multiple topics together in a single story.

If you're looking to do the dice method, here's an online tool for rolling dice:
http://www.random.org/dice/

Here are the topics. Good luck and I hope this help!

Develop Your Story / Who Is She?
« on: April 13, 2014, 12:04:27 PM »
This will be my first time sharing one of my stories publicly, so I am bit nervous.  ;D

Since this is my first time do this, I have decided to post this in "Develop Your Story." I am looking forward to some advise and constructive criticism from fellow writers and artists.  :clapping:

I am still working on an official synopsis for this story, but I hope this next paragraph help tells what the story is about:

The story is entitled, "Who Is She?" A tale of Kevin, a 17 year old boy who was planning to a week at his family's Cottage with his Mother, Father, and his older brother, Alex.  Yet due to unfortunate circumstances, he finds himself spending a week alone at the Cottage, or so he thought. When Kevin arrives at the Cottage, he discovers a girl sleeping in the master bedroom. After a brief panic from both of them, the girl identifies herself as Alice who has no home. When Kevin ask for more information, Alice refuses but makes a offer. If Kevin can guess correctly who Alice is, then she will leave. But until he guesses correctly, Alice will stay at the Cottage. As time goes by, Kevin learns more about Alice's identity, dreams, and pain from herself and others.

Genre: Mystery, Romance, Psychological, Comedy, Drama

So, I hope this story sounds interesting enough to catch a few eyes.  ;) Mystery stories are my favourite type of genre, especially when it comes to identifying an individual.

I will try to post chapter 1 through 3 during this week. I just got to find time and balance between my social life (laughs), practising drawings, and writing stories.

Thanks for your time!

General Manga writer discussions / Writers who are looking for Artist
« on: April 09, 2014, 02:36:12 AM »
For the past week I have been reading posts about writers looking for artist from different forums. And it's upsetting to find some writers treating artists like peasants to their royal ideas. Now, I'm not talking about the writers who describe themselves, their ideas, and ask nicely to work with an artist. I have no problem with that form of approach. The writers I'm talking about are the ones like this guy:

http://www.inkblazers.com/forum/posts/list/2394.page

This guy was so disrespectful he should have posted this picture in his advertisement:

(Scratch out "paid" since he did not want to at all, even with his demands)

As a fellow writer, I completely understand. You have a story in your head that appears to have potential. So, you write the plot, setting, characters, and narrative. Now the last step is to draw the manga itself. But if your like me, your artistic skills are below your ideal image. Thus begins the search for that perfect artist that matches your ideal image straight to the fingers.

When you do find an artist that is willing to collaborate, whether it's by volunteering or by payment, please have some respect. He/She is helping you create that ideal image. If that artist feels disrespected and unappreciated, I guaranteed you that artist will leave. Most artists I know are looking for a partnership or a team dedicated in working together, and not someone hovering over their shoulder saying, "draw this next" without a please and thank you.

My final advise is to not be afraid of making changes. This may be hard for some to accept, but artists will offer suggestions and ideas to the story. As writers, we should be seeing an open road of possibilities and not be stuck in tunnel vision. Artists will want to have some say in the development, whether that be character design or the plot itself. Please take their suggestions to heart and not brush it off. Remember, a single beginning can have multiple endings.

I just want to ask 3 things from writers who are looking for artist:

1) Please be respectful to the artist.

2) Work as a partner/team rather than a writer and artist

3) Don't be afraid to make changes

These may improve your relationship with an artist.

I wish for the best to all writers seeking to achieve their goals.

Vio.

Starter Gallery / My "Pictures"
« on: April 07, 2014, 12:50:59 PM »
I have just finished this picture on MS Paint and was hoping what everyone thinks of it? I appreciate any kind of feedback!  ;D

This picture is related to one of my stories called "Project: A.N.G.E.L.S." This character is one of main protagonists. As I am still learning how to draw human figures and facial expressions, I decided to show his eye, a bit of hair, and some mysterious object blocking his face. *gasp!*

I'm hoping to draw my characters by hand. Once they all stop looking like prepubescent boys, I'll be sure to share them to MR!

There are a few mistakes here and there I'll try to fix in the future. Biggest one for me are the shadows. overall, I love it  ;)

Manga Writer workshop / A Guide for Creating Synopsis?
« on: April 06, 2014, 10:19:17 PM »
I am currently making synopses for some of my stories and looking for guidelines and tips. However, I could not find such a topic on Manga Writers Workshop. If I happen to miss it, please feel free to delete this message.

Synopsis - a brief summary (In my case, describing my stories to potential readers)

So, I would like to ask the fine community of MR for help. What are the critical steps to make an eye-catch, mind intriguing, synopsis that grips potential readers' interest? Any advice would be grateful.  ;D

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it!

Welcome Center / Greeting!
« on: April 06, 2014, 04:26:01 PM »
Hello everyone,

My name is Vio and it's a pleasure to join the fine people of MangaRaiders! I'm a 22 year old male from Ontario, Canada that is inspired to learn the arts of writing manga and anime. I'm not a visual artist, but I'm practicing the basics - slowly moving from stick figures to human figures - and, hopefully, make progress towards creating my first manga ^^.

Hobbies and Interest

Besides manga and anime, I enjoy playing the violin and composing short musical pieces. My favourite composition I made is called "Alice's Lullaby," inspired from one of my characters. Also, video games are big part of my life . I don't play as much as I used to, but I love to play "GTA 5," "The Walking Dead," "The Last of Us," and "The Wolf Among Us." Finally, I like to learn new things and research new information to improve my stories and sharpen my imagination.

Favourite Manga and Anime

My favourite manga has to be "Hajime no Ippo." It's hard to explain why but I just been enthralled by the story and characters. And when I heard that another anime season is finally coming out, I was just overjoyed . I also enjoy "Attack on Titans," "Diamond no Ace," and "Kuroko no Basket."

Thanks for taking the time to getting to know me! I will try my absolute best to be a great member in this community :D

Sincerely,
Vio
