@illuminati thanks! ive gone back to drawing traditionally for a while now though:P

Latest: trying to get some of my sketching over into digital to get used to it when i do it more.
just was mucking about getting used to the tablet and what settings and brushes i like in GIMP

@ryan that looks like a fairly decent tablet monitor, i might actually consider buying that myself, or at least look into cheaper ones than going for the cintiq straight away :P
oh and happy 1000th post btw :P

@lego yeah hand/eye coordination and actual movement skill is important, but without knowing what to draw you are stuck as well, so yeah both are super important :P

@walter everyone has their own expectations and experiences so its hard to say what is "good", my first super cheap $25 tablet has a higher value for money than i will ever see in a cintiq, but it still has limited functionality being a small track area etc.
if you buy from a decent retailer, you can usually return the item if you are unhappy.

I'm not sure if a rip off of a rip off is okay...
it's OK :P
i think a lot of sites do similar things, just make it slightly different, like they are square badges or something :P
then you actually feel like you designed it rather than copying it exactly :P

they appear in your profile page under a tab called achievements or something like that.
basically a page with mostly nothing but those circles. they are sorted by type as they are in the wiki page.

a random google produced this

definitely both would be great, but merit badges are the most manageable and doable of the two. the concepts do overlap quite a bit, so i think before a vote or anything it would be a good idea to properly define what both badges/achievements are and how they will be implemented.

personally i think it would be nice to have the badges in our signature, but there isnt much space to add images with the character limit, especially a lot of badges.

have you seen the anidb badges https://wiki.anidb.net/w/Achievements
theses are either one time our level up out of 8 segments like what Sherbert posted. not sure if its useful, but they might serve as inspiration, so i thought i would post it :P

i know what you mean about a new pose, often my old drawings used simpler poses because i was no good at more complex ones, so redrawing it doesnt always show your true improvement. i suppose you have to take te concept of what you drew, and  redraw it from there to get a whole new piece but based on the original, i guess. i think that goes beyond the point of the draw it again meme though :P

a serious 4koma.......doesnt that defeat its purpose?
its like saying a serious joke book :P
typically if you want to mix seriousness in, you can break out of 4koma style and do your serous bit using normal panels, then go back to 4koma. i have seen quite a few mangas do this :P

agreed. we need secret achievements and stuff that you dont know about until you get it :P

if it was a proper game, there would be random achievements like "PM a MOD at least twice" or "have 10 posts on other peoples art topics". that might make everyone a bit more active, especially if there was a reward at the end of it :P

im not too sure left hand drawing is too relevant to do it frequently. its handy every now and then and you do learn bits and bobs, but unless you plan on losing a hand anytime soon, theres not much point building up a lot of coordination. unless you have a good reason :P

sounds like a great addition to the forum. each workshop could have its own badge as well with a relevant logo/design.

@sherbert thats not a bad idea but i agree with lego its not a badge, but an achievement. we need both i think :P

the trouble with stuff like this is that its a pain to figure it all out and keep it running. i have had an idea regarding something like that which i plan to do something about but its a secret until then and its not completely relevant as always :P

@ryan yeah after i drew it was actually considering that very point. i sort of liked it though, but i will try without to get a smoother edge. but i think for practice i will probably use a borderline because i like it :P

i mucked up a bit of the shading because i wasnt paying attention, but you learn from your mistakes as always :P

@lego thanks man :P

hmmmmmm just practice and learn how you do it wrongly. then draw a slightly curved line in the opposite direction to your error. the two cancel each other out and you have a much straighter line. its like throwing something in the bin, if you miss you aim more to the right or left to counteract your mistake. but you will not get a perfectly straight line, but it will be significantly better. try drawing with your arm, not your hand or wrist. and dont move too quickly try and maintain control at all times. but if you are being serious then a ruler is a must.

yah something like skype where you could draw digitally and have people guide you through watching your screen sounds like not a bad idea, but it probably better having just one person help otherwise you get a lot of different ideas thrown at you simultaneously :P

@lego true. although i would say even bad practice will yield results, just like trying to cut a tree with a butter knife will eventually cut through. its just not very efficient at all. when all else fails, go back to the basics, line quality, drawing circles/parallel lines etc to build up hand skills. then any new problem you approach you will have a better skillset to deal with it. you can always post a specific drawing and ask the forum to critique it, or discus certain skills or techniques in your topic or a new one if appropriate. everyone has something that they are working on, and we all have out own insights to contribute :P
