yeah I do something similar with time limits, especially for editing stages which can suck up a lot of time with not much changes I try and limit the time spent.
But also have a specific date deadline is also useful to make sure you're not dwindling on output.
Breaking down the task and setting mini deadlines also helps a lot.

I've been semi-successful in the last couple of weeks, been forcing myself to write dialogue for random scenes to get my head in the game. Mostly it's junk but good practice to get all the bad words out the way :P
My manga project is hopelessly behind schedule though, the time has been sucked up with other things, most notably overtime at work, I've worked several extra days and it's thrown out my weekly schedule.

wrote about 1k words today, although leaning more towards outlines than scripts unfortunately.
I think if I sort through my ideas folder I can probably find some throwaway ideas that are fleshed out enough to write actual story content maybe. I can easily write ideas or concepts but not so easily commit to an actual script. Maybe because an idea is still flexible and always looks alright whereas a script is more unforgiving in how clearly bad it is.

Also did another 1k words planning for my new manga project. Starting to flesh out the world and setting now. Still stuck on chaarcters.

my vocab is super limited lol
far better to be ambitiously creative than dull and boring I think.
sometimes writing the shot completely differently can help as well. i.e. say something completely different that conveys the same sort of thing.

there's a few problems with that. 1. It shuts off any further conversation 2. It dictates the direction of the story by automatically assigning a hostile view to the org and 3. it doesn't add much substance to the character itself.
Those are pretty reasonable, shows you're thinking about it which is good XD

we'll save the adjustments until after all is said and done.
100% agree, revision hell is a real place and many people are stuck in it XD
my soon to start manga will have a similar outlook, write it once and make a note of desired changes, but don't bother making those changes yet, carry on with more story.

Ahhh so true with the exercising!
For that reason I never count my exercise toward my calories (not that it'd be massively high anyway). Although usually days on which I exercise are usually days in which I'm more motivated overall, and so am less likely to snack anyway XD

Nice tip with the dates! I find I can snack on rice cakes which are quite safe both sugar and calorie wise. Fortunately (?) while I am a sweet tooth, savoury snacks are just as fine in an "emergency". I've noticed it's more that I just want to have a "just snacked" event, and the content or amount doesn't usually matter that much. Sometimes a yogurt is also Ok.
Obviously keeping your bad supplies low helps so you literally can't snack on chocolate if you don't have it XD
Never shop on an empty stomach!!!

Yeah balancing the fibre/protein etc is a bit more difficult, I'm aiming at a 5-a-day for fruit and veg, but otherwise it's a bit hit and miss.

Those are some decent points. Funny because I've just posted my own list of prerequisites for my manga with a similar "must be this", "must not be this" vibe.
I'm sure I've seen some of these points before so maybe you've mentioned them before. Actually has a similar vibe to the Evil Overlord List (WARNING!!! TVTROPES!!!)

As for me I managed to overcome my fears and wrote in novel format for the first time in maybe two years. Zero planning, just freewrote about 200 words. But it's a start. Hoping to reach 1000 words daily regularly of generic content to make sure I get the bad ideas out of the way XD I want to be able to use my commute to freewrite stuff if I can as well.
Also did a small bit of planning for my serial manga. But not nearly enough to get the ball rolling yet.
Feeling pretty pumped so hoping that sticks.

Develop Your Story / Re: Suuper's Writing Projects & Manga Stories
« on: March 10, 2024, 08:54:20 AM »
Unfortunately amongst other things I had to work overtime several days and also had a 1 day holiday so I got delayed quite heavily with this project, especially since I haven't started it yet it will take some time to get the momentum going.

So I'm sort of going to ramble a little and then clarify the goals and targets for this project, and hopefully it'll be achievable.

The primary goal of this project is to gain skill and experience, both in general writing and art areas, but also in project management and long term consistency. So I'm aiming at running a weekly manga for at least a year or until a new project supersedes it. I need to keep in mind that this project WILL be a failure in some way or another. And so I can't get caught up when things don't go how I want, or when I notice plot holes etc, I've just got to keep moving forward and focus on the skill I'm gaining which I'll use for the next project.

My previous weekly manga project only ran for about 4 months and showed that it was definitely possible to generate weekly content despite various schedule issues, and I think generating a lot of content daily/weekly is the key to gaining skill the fastest. I'm hoping to speed-run grinding my remaining lack of skill for the rest of this year, and depending on how far I get, next year as well. But full steam ahead really.

The last project didn't have too many quality control steps due to time constraints, and I think I'll be in a similar boat this time, despite only doing 1 weekly manga instead of 4, I have a lot more life responsibilities now that the covid period is over.

I want to add some specific goals to each chapter of manga that I produce, to force my content to be more varied and ambitious than it would be naturally. So both individual pages will have targets but also the script and the chapters in general. I haven't fully filled out the list but this is how it stands currently:

Goals for this project
(These goals are generic and could apply to any manga that I work on)

Plot
-Each main character has a clear motive/direction in life (which will help to guide the plot as well)
-Each character has specific strengths and weaknesses in both personality and ability, which are made clear in the story.
-Each character will experience character growth to overcome their weaknesses etc.

Script
-Each character will have a specific way of talking and their dialogue should reflect this.

Chapter Script
-Each chapter must end on a cliff-hanger/must not cut the story at a strange place.

Character Design
-The main character's outfits/design should be reasonably detailed and intricate (buttons/cuffs etc)
-The main characters's outfits/design should have a range of colour including some areas of solid black.
-Any character which appears for more than a single panel gets at least one reference sketch, and the more screen-time they get, the more detailed design they get.
-The overall cast should be quite varied in age/height/build etc. Where fantasy elements are included these should also be varied.
-Background characters can be generic but each one should be different to the next.

Page Art
Each page (or two pages...?) must have (at least):
-One panel with a full BG
-One panel with a patterned BG
-One panel whose content breaks the panel borders
-One panel with full shading/rendering
-Full tone for the main characters.
-A rest(?) panel where there is either no dialogue, or the focus is something else while someone speaks.

So something like that? There's still a couple of constraints missing that I can't remember at the moment but I'll fill those in later. I know that some of the page goals are not balanced, in that e.g. you can't always fit a silent panel into every single double page, but I can't risk not doing it at all and then never gaining that skill. So the focus is on gaining skill, NOT producing something that's good.

One concern that I had was making sure the project doesn't take too much time each week, but at the same time I don't want to curb my ambition and fall short. So I figured a decent work-around - placing time limits on certain tasks. Such as, "Only spend 1 hour adding tones". That way I don't get bogged down with a difficult chapter, I can stop once the time is up and the rest of the pages don't get tone. So I can practice the skill without it taking over the project.
So a lot of the steps will have time limits on them, especially the art side. I'm not sure how to apportion my time on each task yet but it'll be similar to the previous manga project, so around 10-12 hours per chapter.
I'd like to have a few higher quality goals such as inking pages to a higher quality until the time is up, and then the rest are sketchy, something like that.
Quality control steps will also be time restricted to not get bogged down e.g. analysing my script for hours to find plot holes, but at the same time I don't want to not look at all.

I also had the idea from the last project, to re-release the pages at a super high quality, but at a slower rate, so I'll be aiming at 1 fully rendered (re-written) page per week as well, with occasional script changes where I spotted mistakes etc.

My favourite part of this project is the staggered stage workflow, in which each week I will be:
-planning far ahead
-writing next weeks script
-drawing this weeks pages.
The offset allows for weeks in which I have no time, to just produce the final pages, and chapters which are more complex the workload will be split over several weeks.
I think around 4-6 stages will work well, I think it was 5 last time but I might need another stage for the final page or more quality control etc. So while it might take a while to fully get started, once I do, it'll be weekly content without too much pressure. And I know that works really well, at least for me.

I'll be posting again, possibly tonight with the actual basic story breakdown as well as the timeline for the next few weeks to make sure I don't spend forever in the planning stages.

yeah keeping it fresh in your mind I think is a super useful thing, otherwise you start to say "I can't write anything until I read the whole thing again" and then it's a much bigger problem.

thanks for that advice for short stories, that's actually given me a sort of idea actually which I might try out. Although I'll be booting up my weekly manga soon and so I'll be getting a fair bit of writing done with that.

ah sorry to hear that. Comfort eating is such an easy trap because it does a provide momentary lift but the downsides are quite impact if one does it too much. Definitely been there done that. Glad you've made back some of the weight already.

I've been counting my calories more consistently recently but still going over my target a lot. But making a point of keeping recording even on a bad day means that I've always got the weight loss on my mind, so I've had a few more successful days than previous. Only lost about half a kilo so nothing substantial yet.

Runningwise I'm around 4k 3/4 times a week which I'm happy enough with. I'll probably reach 5k soon but as long as I'm doing a good portion of exercise I'm happy.

also he died at 68? that's another mangaka that's died young-ish recently. hope stress didn't play a part.
but despite that he managed to make some massive achievements. An inspiration to the rest of us.
RIP...

overall a nice new section of story, as always I want to read more and learn what's really going on behind the scenes.

you wrote Talon "clicks his eyes", do you mean blinking rapidly? I'm pretty sure eyes aren't meant to click XD
Also in the previous chapter he wasn't knocked unconscious, he was only wrestled to the floor? So it seemed unnatural that he was waking up for this scene start, maybe having them remove a hood from him while he was awake would have made more sense.

I found the interaction between Talon and the labcoat lady a little unnatural, he seems to engage in the conversation a little too easily,  given that he seems to view her (as an extension of this organisation) as responsible for their parents deaths.
Perhaps more description of his thoughts/feelings/tone of voice etc would show for example that he's trying to stay calm to get information out of her.
for instance, "You killed my parents, the people that meant everything to me, and you just expect me to forgive you?"
it seems more likely that he would respond "I'll never forgive you!!" rather than forming it as a question.

“I’m sure that you must still be upset about your parents’ deaths…” also seemed super obvious? given that this organization is the one that killed them, it's kind of a (heavily sarcastic) "you don't say??" moment. Also use of the passive "deaths" makes it sound like they aren't taking responsibility for it. Like from her point of view, what did she expect him to respond with? maybe that line and his response could have been removed and she just goes straight into the “...but we had no choice"

"That’s what they’re meant to tell you." I think you meant they were?

looking forward to the next chapter and I've casted my vote!

@nabe Made in Abyss gets dark very fast :P

very nice detailed rendering!

Yes I think that Reg's left leg is very short compared to the right leg, but I think both are too short compared with the torso. As a quick general rule the leg should be twice the length of the torso.
But the rendering and shading are really good, the different textures of the clothing and plants come across really well.

I find surreal pieces like the dementia one to be very open to interpretation, but the art itself and rendering is very good.

Also the cute angel of death character is really nice. The face has a lovely expression and I love how you shaded the nose!
Clothes hair and wings are rendered really intricately, it must have taken ages!!!

lovely art and hope to see more soon!

Getting a better schedule together, did some practise writing today, and a little on one of my manga projects, wrote 20 or so lines of script. Focus is pretty good today but I'm spreading myself thin over all my projects to make a little progress in each of them.
Want to somehow get into writing short stories but can't seem to figure that out at the moment. partly I don't read short stories so I'm finding it hard to imagine what they even are like generally.

ehehehe well we didn't really advertise it much, and just got on with it, but as you well know yourself, life stuff happens and it kept getting procrastinated. Our original release schedule was every 3 weeks but now we're lucky to get it out in 3 months :P
I wouldn't get your hopes up too much though, this was just a throwaway story me and my friend did for both writing and art practice, but also teamwork practice.
Yeah finishing up a project really lifts a weight from your shoulders and also is good habit forming for future works.

I am about to start a new personal project though so stay tuned for that very soon!

Good idea!
I can't find the original post, but there is technically an MR Discord, albeit rather quiet, and the owner doesn't seem to be around any more, but often when there's MR downtime we all check up and are like "is it down or just me" "yup it's down", kinda thing.
